“Welcome to the Stirling County Rugby Academy Prospectus for season 2017/2018. The launch of our Academy a few seasons back has started to produce results; we have numerous U18’s coming into the Senior club better conditioned and with a greater mind set than I have seen in many years. When I see our Junior teams lining up against the opposition the difference in physique is staggering, we are ahead of the game in all facets, compared to other clubs.
I myself attended the very first Mini session in 1974 progressing through the Junior ranks, I never had this sort of preparation for Senior rugby and envy the opportunity these lads have today.
My years coming through the Junior section is littered with life friendships with players, coaches and officials still at the club, players, coaches and officials now with other clubs, ex-team mates now no longer involved in rugby.
Stirling County provides not just rugby to an individual but grows them as people as well.

A Rugby Journey
“Murrayfield 10th Feb 2017. A classic Scottish cold Friday evening as I stood there before the crowd
arrived – standing and reflecting under the floodlights. This place is always special but tonight it felt
extra special, even though maybe with a tinge of sadness? It felt like tonight would be the end of an
era; as my son Bryce transitioned his 11-year journey from mini rugby to tonight - where he would
run out onto that pitch at Murrayfield with his team mates in the Scottish Youth Cup Final.
I remember that day 11 years ago, when we turned up at Stirling County and Bryce along with a few
others were given the traditional shout out from an enthusiastic bunch of kids “Welcome to County”.
He shone bright in his new rugby kit – that didn't last long!
I remember that day as though it was yesterday – in fact, like it all happened in a “blink of an eye”. My
son had gone from an enthusiastic rugby player to, well, an enthusiastic rugby player- just a bit bigger
and wiser now.
That night at Murrayfield finished on a high as the Stirling County team defended their title and lifted
their trophy one more time. I grabbed the professional photographer at the end of the game and
asked, “could you please take a photo of me and my son?” That photo for whatever reason is one of
the most special photos to me of all time. A moment as father and son stand on the pitch at
Murrayfield – surrounded by voices of rugby past and in the stands friends and family and on the
pitch team mates and great coaches. A moment in time.
What a journey it has been – in all those years I have only missed two of Bryce’s games – one because
I was speaking at a conference and the second one because I was at his coaches’ stag party – and
Bryce had demanded I did not miss that.
Over these years we have travelled throughout Scotland from Gala to Inverness to Edinburgh to
Glasgow and best of all our trip to the Orkneys. We travelled around the UK on several mini tours in
Dublin, Wales, Harrogate, Newcastle and of course our favourite trip abroad to Biarritz when they
were Under 15s. We were so well looked after by Shaun Hegarty and Federico Rambur – two people
who really care and understand about the spirit of rugby.
So many memories and to be able to stand on the touchline and see these kids grow has been
amazing. They've not only turned into great characters but together they have become men. They
have all certainly learnt a lot along the way through this fantastic sport and through the incredible
volunteers who have given up their time to coach them. They’ve coached them to play rugby, but
more than that, they've helped them learn the importance of being part of a team - of losing, winning
and what it means to work hard for each other. To learn and improve. All this incredible education but
probably best of all for many - the banter and the laughs with their teammates – these are memories
these boys will hold onto forever. They may not realise just how much right now, but in 2 years, 5
years, 10 years’ time they will bump into another friend from this journey and boy will they have
memories to have a laugh about over a pint.

But it’s not been all about the players - the friendships made on the touchlines as we have stood in
the cold Scottish winter days together, sat in cars waiting or travelling – we have
met people we wouldn’t have met, we have got to know each other, we have laughed and we have
enjoyed the momentous occasions together when our boys did good. We've been there together and
in a way, have also learned what it’s like to be a part of something - part of a team.
And how the kids have grown! Each year we would look at the players on the next pitch in the next
age group in disbelief – would our kids be that size one day? And yet sure enough we stand here now
with the Under 18s as they finally transition to senior rugby. Also, ready to leave home and continue
their journeys to whatever is next for them. What has gone in the last few years will certainly stand
them in good stead. Possibly more so, than many things they will have learnt at school.
So, to all the players, the coaches, and the supporters - I say thank you. It has been a brilliant
experience and a privilege. To Bryce I say it has been an immense pleasure and honour for Elaine,
Georgia and myself to have been there with you every step of the way. We could not be prouder.

Rugby Development at Stirling County: A Place of Excellence
Stirling County RFC has for the past four decades been at the forefront of rugby
development in Scotland, since our successful mini rugby section was started at
Bridgehaugh Park in the 1970s. This home-grown rugby talent was fundamental in the
meteoric rise of County’s 1st XV from the depths of the Seventh Division to winning the
Scottish Championship in 1995, and ensuring that County continue to compete in the
top-tier of club rugby.
Currently there are over 300 junior players playing rugby at Stirling County ranging from the ages of 7 to 18. Many of our young players have progressed to play for County’s 1st XV, and have gained regional and national representative honours, with the best rising to the highest levels in the sport.
Over the years, our Club has produced a large number of age-grade internationalists,
while past senior Scottish internationalists who have worn County’s colours include
George Graham, Ian Jardine, Kenny Logan, Kevin McKenzie, James McLaren, Allister Hogg
and Alastair Kellock. More recently many County players, who have learned their rugby at
County, have gone on to play for the professional sides of Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow
Warriors, and have been capped by Scotland at the highest level, including current
internationalists Grant Gilchrist and Adam Ashe with Finn Russell a British Lion in 2017,
along with Gordon McCrorie who now captains the Canadian national side.

County’s Under-18s are the current Youth Cup champions, and are the most successful
youth team in Scotland, having won this accolade thirteen times, seven times in the past
decade, which is more than any other club, while our age-grade youth teams (Under-13s
to Under-18s) were overall champions of the last seasons President’s Conference,
comprising the elite rugby development clubs across Scotland. This further demonstrating
the high quality of coaching and player development within our renowned Junior and
Youth sections.

Stirling County’s achievements in rugby development are further evidenced by
numerous County players selected for our national age-grade sides and competing for
Scotland Under-20s in recent Six Nations and World Championships.

Stirling County RFC has strong links with local communities and schools, and through our
out-reach rugby development programme, the Club has introduced rugby to young
players from many local areas and backgrounds, who are encouraged to play rugby,
thereby increasing participation levels in sport generally.
At County, we recognise the importance of ensuring that our young players are given
the best opportunities to further develop their talent to enable their competent
progress in the sport and fulfil their potential.

Our ‘school of rugby’ approach will take our young players from their introduction to the
sport from Primary 1 to 3 micro rugby, developing through mini and youth rugby until
they reach age of 18 years. We will focus on the long-term development of players, and
promote physical well-being and skills improvement that will equip players to reach the
higher levels of club rugby, thereby further raising the standard of the domestic game,
and encouraging opportunities for the best to further their career in the sport, as many
have done so before.
Stirling County Rugby Club has, over the years, laid down many claims to fame. Not least
amongst these was their pioneering attitude to Women's Rugby. In the vanguard from
the late 1970s, girls who wished to join the rough and tumble of mini-rugby, usually
alongside their brothers, were made welcome. Lynn MacCorquodale, with her brother
David, was quickly followed by Vicky Barrington (Jamie) and Alison McGrandles (Matt and
Barry). At that age, these girls were physically stronger and often better co-ordinated,
certainly more motivated, than many of the boys in their group, and put their ability and
power to good use.
Vicky Barrington became the very first female to put on a Stirling County strip and actually
represent the club, becoming captain of a very successful P7 squad. Alison played
alongside Kenny Logan, Gareth Flockhart and Mark McKenzie up until midi rugby then
having played age grade hockey returned to rugby whilst at University and went on
to notch-up some 50 International Caps for Scotland including playing in 1994, 1998 and
2002 Rugby World Cups and 3 European Championships in between.
In season 2016/2017, two Girls Rugby teams were in operation, at U15 and U18 levels.
They did very well in their inaugural season by winning the Presidents Conference, along
with Biggar. The U18 girls won every national competition last season, alongside the U15
girls winning the SRU Girls national seven aside tournament. We are especially keen to
encourage girls transferring from mini rugby to come along and join the best youth
section in Scottish rugby. So, in 2017/2018 we will run an U12 girls team, as part of this
development alongside our “hub club” status for Women’s rugby which will further assist
in developing the women’s game in the Forth Valley.

Our Stirling County Rugby Academy structure will provide selected players with a
programme of individual development through improved skills and team play coaching,
alongside strength and conditioning, health, nutritional and life-style support and
guidance, provided by a range of qualified coaches and specialist professionals.
To support the further development of our players, Stirling County has invested in a new
purpose-built strength and conditioning gym facility and new changing facilities for both
men and women, adding to the excellent rugby infrastructure at Bridgehaugh Park. Player
Welfare is of paramount importance with the health and wellbeing of all players.
What is also very pleasing is to see 11 of last season’s youth players moving up, into the
senior ranks in 2017/2018 thereby sustaining their rugby journey within the club. Stirling
County RFC will continue to lead the way in the development of young rugby players and
provide them with every opportunity to aspire to achieve their ‘goals’ in our great sport.

Playing Structure
Stirling County RFC run teams from P1-3 touch rugby to Mini rugby (P4-P7) and Youth rugby (U13 to
U18), along with Girls teams at U12, U15 and U18, a Woman’s XV and three Senior XVs with our 1st
XV competing in the top tier of Scottish Rugby the BT Premiership.
At all levels, we utilise qualified and experienced coaches working with a vision to
produce quality rugby players where their development as a person as well as their
development as a rugby player is foremost in our thinking. Our U18 Head coach,
Matt McGrandles was voted Youth coach in 2016. Along with Chris Faill he also
achieved the UKCC Level 3 coaching award.
From this we weld these players into teams where they learn the worth of playing for each other and
the fundamental meaning of being part of a team.
In order to do this, we expose our young players to expert individual and team rugby
coaching, strength and conditioning coaching, as well as advice on sports psychology,
nutrition, lifestyle; all the factors that allow every player the best opportunity to fulfil their
potential.
Through the process of intense, enjoyable weekly training and matches against other top club sides at
Mini and Youth levels and against some of the top school sides in the country, we aim to develop our
players to be absolutely the best that they can be.
Two seasons ago in addition to the school’s conferences Scottish Rugby announced a revamp of the
club youth league structure. Similar to the schools’ programme, clubs across the country producing
teams at every secondary school age level have been grouped together in conferences based on the
number and quality of their teams and player development.
In season 2016/2017 Stirling County played in the Presidents Conference, wining the boys conference for the second time, with the U18’s also winning the boys National Youth Cup along the way. 2016 Conference Winners

In season 2017/2018, the Mitsubishi Motor car company are sponsoring schools and youth rugby in Scotland. As part of this sponsorship deal boys will play in the Shogun Conference and the girls will play in the Mirage Conference.

In addition, our junior teams will also play a series of invitational matches against some of the
best independent schools in Scotland, as well as a programme of touring matches, both hosting
and travelling. In season 2017 / 2018, fixtures have been arranged with Merchiston school,
Stewarts Melville College, St Aloysius, Robert Gordons and from England Culford School and
Ealing Trailfinders. Our Mini rugby age-groups will play regular tournaments and festivals
throughout the season culminating, in what is a fantastic experience, their end of year tour (for
P5 to P7).

As part of Stirling County’s dedication to giving our young athletes the opportunity to
progress in their chose sport we offer our Player / Performance Development Programme
(PDP).
For our Player Development Programme, we offer all our S2 & U15 players to sign up to
PDP sessions where they receive additional skills, specialist skills and strength &
conditioning sessions throughout the season along with sessions in sports nutrition and
sport psychology.
Within our Performance Development Programme, we operate at 4 tiers where players
will receive anything from 2 to 5 practical sessions per week in rugby and S&C with
nutritional and psychological support. Players are selected on merits of current
performance and future potential with a great emphasise on the qualities of the person
and not just the rugby player.
For our top-level players, they receive individual performance development plans, going into detail
on their individual rugby, strength & conditioning (S&C), psychological, nutritional and lifestyle
needs. This will be achieved with set goals within team training session, positional and unit specialist
skills sessions, dedicated PDP S&C sessions, individual meetings with performance coach, sports
psychologist and sports nutritionist.
A specific, individual plan that; with the hard work put in by the player, will allow that
player to become the best player that they can be.

Stirling County RFC strive to achieve best practice in player welfare with the safety and
well-being of our players always at the forefront of our minds.
We work with the Scottish Rugby Unions model of best practice which includes:
• Suitable and robust recruitment for volunteers and staff to work with young players
• Appoint suitably trained (both UKCC and First Aid) coaches and managers
• Ensure there is a clear way for young players and parents to raise any concerns. Appoint
a child protection officer
• Adopt and implement a child protection policy
• Involve parents/carers wherever possible
• Ensure staff/volunteers are up to date with good practice in welfare and child
protection

Minis Training Arrangements

Minis Training:
• Saturday – 9.30 to 11.00 at SCRFC – Team Training
Selected Sundays for home and away matches.
We have training each Saturday morning 9.30am to 11am (apart from some holidays such as summer, Easter and the winter break during December/January/February). We have matches most Sundays either home or away (away matches may be bus or self-transport depending on distance from the club).
Match fees apply to all games, £3 for home games, £3 self-transport away games and £5 for away games where we lay on a bus.
Regarding kit, we have a club strip, Stirling County top, black shorts and red/white hooped socks. We do insist that all players use a gum shield and recommend the use of rugby/football boots. All items can be bought at the club shop, again details online http://www.stirlingcounty-rfc.co.uk/shop/ or of course you can buy shorts, socks, gum shields, boots etc. from any good sports shop. You don’t need to rush out to get all the kit at once of course. We also have a thrift shop at the club offering donated kit most weekends. The most important thing for us is that our players have enough layers available to deal with the good old Scottish weather.
We do offer a three-week taster before any payment needs to be made to ensure that your child is comfortable and happy to join.
