ElectionA ballot on the proposed changes to STIlAs bylaws will be
sent next month to all voting members of STtvlA Pleasetake the time to review the ballot and vote to approve thework of the Membership and Bylaws Committees
Bylaws are a very important tool that govern the associations busi-ness They are used as a procedural rnanual to define the qualificationsfor membership who is entitled to vote how meeungs are called howboard members are elected their responsibilities and much more
Associations that represent thriving industries need to examine theirbylaws on a regular basis to make certain they keep pace with theneeds of the industry The STMA Membership Committee has beenstudying industry and STMA membership trends They observed thatthere are multiple sporls turf man~gers in varying capacities at sportsfacilities yet only a small percentage of those facilities have multiplemembers The committee developed a classification in the proposedBylaws that makes it easy for these members to join Pending mem-bership approval of the Bylaws the Board has set these dues at a lowerrate to encourage multiple members from the same facility to join
timeThe Membership Committee also analyzed the partnerships STMA has
developed with employer groups They considered the Nationallnlerscholastic Athletic Association of Administrators (NlAAA) and realizedthai STrvlA could offer so much more as that associations EducationalPartner They see an opportunity for STMA to provide more information andeducation to high school athletic directors Thus they created an Affiliate clas-sification that allows this group to join and learn from STMA but not vote orhold office and the Board has set the dues at less than half the cost of a pro-fessional membership Again this is scbjectro membership approval
10 review the proposed Bylaws in its entirety go to the MembersOnly area ofthe STMA web site wwwsportsturfmanagerorgandclickon Bylaws
Enclosed trh the Bylaws revisions will be the proposed Slate ofCandidates for the SIMA annual election of the Board of DirectorsPlease review the slate and cast your vote All ballots are due at STMAheadquarters by midnight December 22 The results of the election andbylaws changes will be announced at the STM Annual Meeting FridayJanuary 18 in San AnLonio at the STi1A Conference and Exhibition

The brown ha tile op of a large chunkof concrete ehow culously made itthrough the rototilling and laser grading process and isnear a hash mark directly on an athletic field playing sur-face This concrete chunk first showed up as a smallbrown circle in October 2005 during fall football prac-tice and as the players wore off the grass in this particu-lar area with repetitive work it became a bald dome as
the concrete slowly revealed itself The athletic field wasbuilt in August of 2004 with native soils that were oncepart of a golf course The initial field contractor for roughgrading was a typical soils excavation contractor hiredby the building construction contractor then UNT bidout the laser grading and sad work to sports field con-tractors to finish the work The inset photo shows tile sizeof the concrete chunk and since this part of the countrywas in severe drought conditions last year one mayassume the fields clay base shrank pushing or floatingthe concrete chunk to the surface

Start your renovation now
Ijust came from a meeting on rmooating our high schoolsbaseball field nit uuual plans were to buiU a new firMbut now plans are to renoiate the old one Can you aduiseus on a plan thai can gel thii done ASAP we need thefield ready for the first of the year Our budget is ok and
should be at least adequate to tin tlu project relatively easily Pleaselet me know what you think is possible
Thanks for your e-mail To efficiently help you I mayneed more information while your request may seem sim-ple enough without some indication of where you are atand where you want to go it is a little difficult to replyRenovate is a relative term If all the field needs is someweed control and fertilizer It is a lot different than turfremoval drainage installation earth movement re-estab-lishment etc required for other renovations
I dont know why you want to renovate so Im just goingto address the steps as they relate to issues You said ASAPbut no indication of timeline for the work or when it wouldbegin or even who is doing the work (in-house or a contrac-tor) Saying a good budget is also prdty relative to howextensive a re-build you need and the desired end result
orr the lop of my headI Spray out any living vegetation with Glyphosate (egRoundup applied at 4 pounds of active ingredient per acre)r suggest three applications at 3-weck intervals to removecommon bermudagrass I realize this will delay the project9 weeks but this will help minimize a reoccurrence of com-mon bermudagrass after the field is renovated Since it isnearly September as r write this try to get the first applica-tion out as soon as possible to beat the cooler weather Ifyou delay getting the turf sprayed too much longer it maybe better to wait until springsummer for renovation If thefield is not bermudagrass less extensive herbicide applica-lions or alternative products may be more appropriate
2 Scrape the surface to remove debris If the vegetationhas decayed and you have a sandy soil then a box bladeon a tractor is usually sufficient If not go to the next stepand come back to this step as needed
3 Alleviate compaction of field via rotntillinjr or otheraggressive soil cultivation (as needed)
4 Have the field surveyed to re-establish properdrainage (you may have to address sideline fences or otherstructures as well as soil buildup during this step) Have awell-thought out drainage plan otherwise drainage prob-lems may forever haunt you
5 Consider infield drainage leveling etc with abovestep if water movement has been a significant problemYou may have to add or remove clay as necessary You
may also consider replacing infield clay if the existingmaterial is not performing as desired
6 Determine the appropriate grass for your areaAssuming you are from the Deep South find a reputablesupplier of a quality hybrid bermudagrass (eg TifwayTifSport Celebration etc) Often local golf course super-intendents are knowledgeable on the better local sad pro-ducers Your local extension service may also have goodadvice on sod growers An alternative would be plantingone or the new seeded cultivars (Princess Riviera etc)The seed can usually be obtained from local distributorsCheck your yellow pages under the titles seed Farmsupply or sad
Generally the suggested way to establish hybridbermudagrasses for sports fields is to sprig but plantingsprigs in September or later is generally nul suggestedBermudagrass grows best with nighttime temperatures inthe 60s You could sad but it would be costly During thelate fall and winter you do not have much of an option ifyou need the field in the spring Your best bet in therailwinter months is to get sod that is still gTeen and hopefor some WaIID temperatures If you are not in the souththen an alternative grass (fescue bluegrass etc) may bemore appropriate
i After planting grass (I am assuming the irrigation sys-tem is sufficient] follow good grow-in practices (irrigationfertilization soil amelioration and pest control) There areseveral good publications available from our University aswell as other sources that cover athletic field managementpractices once the turf is established
Yithout more information T am not sure how muchinformation to share with you If the school needs exten-sive help through the process I would suggest you hireeither a knowledgeable contractor for the construction oran experienced consultant Either can spend the time towrite out detailed plans andor direct the work required tofully renovate a site
Response from School Representative Thank you so muchfor your prompt reply Yes my e-mail was vague Our school is incentral Florida and Im afraid were faced with tuif rcmooaldrainage installation earth mooement re-establishment etc Asyou very well know budgets come and go like the tides Yes itwould be SQ milch better in the grOWIng season However we aresubject to lose thi[unds if we dont use them right now
Your notes were very helpful we sprayed the field today Wehove 0 local wmJmny that can do the earth movement and isfamiliar with golf course construction we have contacted 0 tur-(graiJwmpan~r tltal is giving us a good price on one of the grass-es you mentioned Thanks again
