With Spring approaching quickly now is the time to think about proper birdhouse maintenance as it’s so important for the birds and also your enjoyment. The first step in ensuring a successful nesting season is to remove all of the old nesting material from the previous season, but not before tapping on the house and looking inside to make sure there aren’t any eggs or chicks inside. I highly recommend wearing gloves while doing this and washing thoroughly after you have finished. Birdhouses are natural breeding grounds for many parasites that feed on young broods as well as adult birds. Just removing the old nesting material isn’t enough, as parasites tend to live for years in the cracks and crevices of birdhouses. Now it’s time to wash your birdhouse with Songbird Essentials Birdhouse & Feeder Cleaner and here’s how easy it is! Simply mix 4 oz. of birdhouse cleaner with 1 gallon of warm water and a drop of dish soap (just enough to form a soapy surface) and scrub, scrub, scrub inside and out! No need to rinse! Before hanging your birdhouse back up, there are several other things to look for to ensure birds safety. Are there signs of splintered wood that could injure a bird? Is the hardware for hanging the house sturdy? Have predators chewed the wood at the entrance hole? If the entrance hole is being chewed on I suggest installing a Songbird Essentials Portal Protector to keep those predators from damaging the house any further. The Songbird Essentials Portal Protectors are available in 3 sizes: - SE615 - Wren Portal Protector 1 1/8” - SE616 Chickadee & Titmouse Portal Protector 1 ¼” - SE617 Bluebird Portal Protector 1 ½” Now that you are ready for the nesting season keep in mind the placement of your birdhouse. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. • Houses mounted on metal poles are less vulnerable to predators than houses attached to trees. • Don’t put birdhouses near feeders. • If you have very hot summers, face the house entrance north or east to avoid overheating the box. • Make sure your birdhouses are in place well before the breeding season begins. As you prepare your houses for the upcoming nesting season don’t forget a “NEW” addition is always nice. With so many birdhouses to choose from I’m sure we have one to match your personality. Just arrived and soon to be at Songbird Station choose from a whimsical Retro Camper Birdhouse (SE941), Canoe Birdhouse (SE942), Owl Birdhouses (SE983 or SE984) or a Beach Cottage Birdhouse (SE944) all with easy clean out and ready to make a statement in your yard. Along with spring comes rain and moisture, moisture that sets into your bird feeders and molds your seed. Check your feeders frequently for mold. Birdscancontractrespiratorydiseases from inhaling mold/fungus spores. And mold happens, so be vigilant! If you see mold, or the seed is clumping (a sign of pre-mold dampness), dispose of the seed and clean the feeder thoroughly with hot soapy water. Check your stored seed too! It should smell fresh and nutty. If you notice any unpleasant musty smell or clumping, it’s gone bad. If in doubt, throw it out!!! At Songbird Station, we have PremiumBlendBirdSeed-NOBUGS-NOFILLERS! Rake up any shell debris on the ground below your feeders regularly to avoid mold buildup for the sake of ground feeders like cardinals, white-throated sparrows and juncos. Clean out debris from bird houses to prepare for nesting season.
