CANTEEN
CHRISTMAS LUNCH: Tuesday 3 December is our Canteen
Christmas Lunch. All orders must be received in the Canteen by
9.00am Friday 29 November, both Qkr and paper orders. Late
orders will NOT be accepted as we need to confirm numbers
with our suppliers on Friday. No other Canteen lunch orders
will be provided on Tuesday, so if you are NOT having a
Christmas lunch, please send food from home with your child.
END OF TERM LUNCH ORDER SELECTION: As we come to the
end of the year, certain lunch options may be unavailable as
stocks deplete. Please refer to Qkr or provide a second choice
option on the lunch order bags.
JP CHRISTMAS SING-A-LONG: The Canteen will be open
Tuesday night with a selection of cold food and frozen items.
The Rostrevor Kindergarten will once again provide a Sausage
Sizzle.
VOLUNTEER ROSTER 2020: If anyone would like to be included
in the Term 1 2020 Canteen volunteer roster and you haven't
already given me your details, please pop into the canteen or
leave a message with the Front Office. The only reason the
Canteen can provide the wonderful selection of counter food
choices and lunch menu items is with the fantastic support of
the Stradbroke School community.

K8
This term, K8 has been focusing on the Individual and Society’s
inquiry linked to Business and Economics. We had to create a
business, in partners or individually. We focused on a topic of
our choice.
Our first step was to complete a business overview, and a
business plan sheet including the name of the business, items
we were selling etc. Next, we had to complete the financial
business sheet which included the start up cost of our business.
This required approval from the bank of teachers. Then we had
to come up with a logo, slogan, jingle/song and TV
advertisement as business marketing tools.
Some of our class’ ideas were; “Golden Hands” which is a
watch store that sells all kinds of watches, a sports shop called
“Sportsland” with all of the equipment that you need to use
during your sports activities, and “Finders Keepers” which is a
second-hand store where you can buy clothing, etc.
Most people we asked liked this business assignment because
it involved a lot of creative thinking, maths and collaborating
with others.

JAPANESE EXCHANGE STUDENTS
On Monday of Week 7, some of the
Year 5 students were fortunate enough
to be visited by Year 10 Japanese
exchange students from Norwood
Morialta High School.
The Japanese students were from a
school in Kyoto called Ritsumeikan
Junior High School.
Before our visit from these students,
we studied Japan and the main
features, we learnt some simple
Japanese traditions and history such as
the story of Sadako and a thousand
paper cranes from Hiroshima. We even
learnt a rap of the numbers 1-10, it was
super catchy!
Some of the activities we experienced
with the exchange students were:
• origami, and learning to fold paper
cranes like Sadako from
Hiroshima.
• Traditional Japanese games
(braiding string, spinning tops)
• Card games
• Writing simple Japanese
characters
During our time together, we asked
one another questions about school,
our countries and our families.
Overall, it was excellent to be able to
build relationships with students from
another country. It made us want to
visit Japan!

Arts news- Music Suite in Term 4
Year 2 classes have looked at Stories from Vietnam, re-
telling a folktale, The Starfruit Tree, and learning about
Vietnamese water puppets.
Year 3 students created their own Trouble at the Palace
scene and then presented it in cartoon form. Here is Xin Yi’s
cartoon:
Drama
The focus in the Music Suite this term has been on drama.
As the term has progressed, we have collected words that
are specific to each year’s drama unit. Here’s our fabulous
drama word wall!
Reception students have been working with puppets as a
way of expressing emotions and telling stories.
Way back in Term 3, our Year 1 classes presented Jack and
the Beanstalk. They did a wonderful job! Since then they
have been working on their mime and storytelling skills.
In Year 4, students worked in groups to perform a play, The
Monsters, about children who have eaten too much junk
food. Some of our students enjoyed playing the hyperactive
children just a bit too much, I think!
Year 5 students started by performing short scripted
scenes, and then had to develop their own scenes as
sequels. We have learned a lot about scriptwriting,
including the fact that the first draft needs lots of
rethinking!

ACER Test
The Assessment Day for the Ignite Test is
Saturday 22nd February 2020
Is your son or daughter gifted? The Ignite Program is a selective entry program for gifted students entering Year 8 at The Heights School.
Within the Ignite program there are opportunities for students to be accelerated, and participate in a range
of enrichment activities to extend and stimulate their adept minds. They study, and form friendships with
other like-minded peers, in a caring and nurturing environment.
We continue to be one of the leading schools across the Northern Region, with outstanding SACE results. In
2016 our students achieved the highest SACE scores across the Northern Region. In 2017, 20% of our Stage 2
students received an ATAR score of over 80. 11% of these students scored above 90, with our highest achieving
an ATAR score of 98.8. In 2018, 98% of students who applied for university positions were offered their first
or second preference. In 2019, The Heights School staff are mentoring a student who is currently studying first
year University (through the Headstart program at Adelaide University) whilst completing their SACE on
campus at The Heights.
If you believe your child would thrive and benefit from the Ignite program, please complete an expression of
interest form for your child to sit the ACER test conducted at The Heights School
Expression of Interest Forms are now available on online via http://www.theheights.sa.edu.au/ignite.html
Additional enquiries can be directed to Michelle Crush (Ignite Services) at The Heights School on 82636244
or via email: [email protected]
Please note that students can only sit the test once. If a student sits for the assessment then he/she cannot re-sit the test the following year
so we strongly recommend only sitting the test as a Year 7 student
IGNITE
Program
for
Gifted
Children
IGNITE is a program for students with high intellectual potential.
The Heights School is a Department for Education (DfE) Special Interest School which is
funded to provide programs for IGNITE students previously known as ‘Students with High
Intellectual Potential’ or ‘Gifted and Talented’.
The DfE IGNITE Program is also offered at Glenunga International High School and Aberfoyle
Park High School.
Research shows that many gifted learners are working at a pace that is much slower than
their capabilities. The program offers students the opportunity to progress at an accelerated
rate commensurate with their ability.
In line with our school’s Strategic Directions and Values the program gives students the
opportunity to pursue excellence and strive for their personal best within a supportive
environment. Students can access flexible pathways and study across year levels. Student
successes are celebrated.
The Heights School provides a range of accelerated learning options for students.
Students are selected for entry into the IGNITE Program through an ACER (Australian
Council for Educational Research) assessment which is held once per year in February. Each
year The Heights accepts approximately 60 students through this process, based on student
performance.
The assessment is open to students in Year 7 or exceptionally gifted and mature Year 6
students for entry into Year 8 in 2021.
