Understanding Places

Place Analytics encourages a holistic approach to understanding places, assessing the relationship between economy, society and environment.

We recognise that ‘average’ scores for a large area frequently hide local/spatial inequalities.

We set places in context, identifying the interplay with neighbouring areas

We tell a ‘story of place’ using innovative ways of visualising and summarising performance - encouraging joined-up thinking and action.

Understanding People

We provide access to the Output Area Classification (OAC), a geodemographic system developed by ONS, together with resources to help you exploit the classification.

We supply Local Data Estimates, modelled using OAC and based on national surveys.

We also build your capacity to model your own local data, using OAC.

We provide help and support in developing a common understanding of your citizens, customers and communities, that can be shared across organisations.

Understanding Local Economies

Throughout the global economy, the critical structural trend is the growth of the knowledge economy. Place Analytics assesses local economies from a knowledge economy perspective.

We set economic competitiveness within a social and environmental context, recognising that ‘quality of place’ can have a major impact on local economic performance.

We set local economies within a regional and national context - ideal for LEPs and Local Economic Assessments.

Future drivers of change

Our 'drivers of change' resources provide analysis of 10 key forces that we believe will be influential in shaping the future of places. They provide analysis of underlying trends and forecasts, acting as a resource for anticipating future change at a regional and local level. Constantly updated, they combine powerful charts/graphics with supporting commentary. Outputs can be used to set a context for strategies or can be used in presentations about future change.

- Globalisation - Science and technology - Industrial structure - Labour market - Organisational change - Demographics - Inequality and social cohesion - Values and attitudes - Leisure and tourism - Environment

We work with clients to assess the importance and uncertainty of the individual drivers and help them to identify future opportunities and threats.

Scenario planning

We have developed a unique methodology for creating future scenarios. In part it draws on our profiling and benchmarking tools, ensuring scenarios are based on a clear understanding of current conditions.

However, it also shows how 'drivers of change' can be used to create future scenarios and how these can be incorporated within a strategy-build process.

Visions for the future

We work with regional and local organisations across Britain. We help them to understand current conditions, anticipate future change, and work with them to develop long-term visions and strategies. These range from economic development and regeneration strategies, through to skills and sustainable community strategies.

We have developed a range of techniques for engaging stakeholders and working with them to develop visions that are vivid and compelling. They are designed to reflect consensus amongst partners and to summarise desired outcomes.

While our approach is flexible, it ideally involves several interrelated stages of work:
