WELCOME TO OSTEOLOGY AUSTRALASIA 2017!

On behalf of the Organising Committee we would like to welcome you to the 1st Osteology Australasia Symposium in Melbourne.

The Osteology Foundation promotes research, education and collaboration between universities and industry in the field of oral and maxillofacial tissue regeneration. True to its motto “Linking Science with Practice in Regeneration”, the Osteology Foundation aims to bridge the gap between scientific progress and clinical practice, as well as between academic and industrial researchers in the field of oral tissue regeneration.

The scientific program of this National Osteology Symposium addresses different strategies for predictable hard and soft-tissue regeneration with the aim to give practitioners the relevant knowledge for their daily practice, and the confidence to provide their patients with the best possible treatment. International and national renowned experts will discuss the topics based on evidence from research, study data, and master clinician’s experience.

For two days we will delve intensively into the current status of knowledge and research in oral tissue regeneration, discuss trends and new techniques that might change our strategies tomorrow. Aside from the lectures, we would like to encourage all participants with an interactive session to contribute their experiences and stimulate discussion. And of course practical workshops will offer the unique opportunity of trying out the latest strategies and materials.

SPEAKERS & MODERATORS

Christoph Hämmerle, SwitzerlandChristoph Hämmerle, Dr med dent, is the Head and Chairman of the Clinic for Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Dental Material Science including the Division of Implantology. He is certified in prosthodontics as well as in periodontics. His clinical and research focus is on the comprehensive treatment of complex, partially edentulous patients, applying all available options of restorative dentistry, including dental implants. Dr. Hämmerle has published more than 200 original articles and has widely lectured internationally. He is the past president of the Osteology Foundation and the past president of the European Association of Osseointegration (EAO).

Pamela K. McClain, USAPamela K. McClain, D.D.S. has maintained a full time private practice in periodontics incorporating clinical research since 1987 and is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgical Dentistry at the School of Dental Medicine, University of Colorado. She also served as Research Professor at the University of Maryland Dental School, Department of Periodontics from 1994 - 2001. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and past president of the Rocky Mountain Society of Periodontists. She is a Past President of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and has been active on numerous committees with the AAP and other organizations. She has received a number of prestigious awards for her research and other accomplishments. Dr. McClain lectures worldwide on a variety of topics and has published over 20 articles/chapters in professional journals and books.

Ki-Tae Koo, South KoreaKi-Tae Koo DDS, MS, PhD. received his Dental Degree at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea. He then obtained his Master of Science degree in Oral Biology from Temple University in 2003. During this time he also received advanced training in periodontology. In 2007, Dr. Koo received his Doctorate in Periodontology from Yonsei University in 2007. He is currently an associate professor and program director at the School of Dentistry, Seoul National University as well as the former Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs. Additionally, Dr. Koo serves as an adjunct professor at Georgia Regents University. He has numerous clinical publications in various reference journals and continues to conduct research in areas such as: Extraction socket Management in severely compromised sockets, periodontal wound healing, and clinical treatment of Peri-implantitis.

Otto Zuhr, GermanyOtto Zuhr studied dentistry at the University of Aachen from 1986 until 1992 and received his DMD from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Aachen. Several educational programs led him to Switzerland, Scandinavia and USA during the following two years. In 1996 he opened his own office focusing on periodontal surgery and aesthetic dentistry in Munich. In 1999 he founded a new clinic together with Drs. Bolz, Wachtel, and Hürzeler and became an associate member in the Institute of Periodontology and Implantology (IPI) in Munich. In 2001 he received his Specialist in Periodontology of the German Society of Periodontology (DGP). Otto Zuhr has written several articles in the field of periodontology and aesthetic dentistry and is lecturing nationally and internationally. In 2012 he published his book “Plastic-Esthetic Periodontal and Implant Surgery” with Quintessence.



Stephen Chen, AustraliaDr Chen is a specialist periodontist in private practice in Melbourne, Australia and is Clinical Associate Professor at the School of Dentistry, The University of Melbourne. He graduated MDSc in periodontology in 1987, and completed a PhD degree in 2008. Dr Chen’s scientific interests are in the field of tissue regeneration and post-extraction implant outcomes. Dr Chen was recently inaugurated as president of the International Team for Implantology (ITI). He is past-president of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists and Australasian Osseointegration Society, and past-chairman of the ITI Australasian Section.

Peter Clark Ryan, AustraliaPeter has been actively involved with implant dentistry since 1991 and became a Fellow of the ITI (International Team for Oral Implantology) in 2000 and a Specialist Clinical Associate, The University of Sydney. He has been President of ADA (Qld) and President of the Australian Society of Periodontology amongst many other appointments.

Michael Danesh-Meyer, New ZealandDr Danesh-Meyer gained his BDS and MDS (with Distinction) from University of Otago. He subsequently taught at Otago University and worked in private practice. From 1998-2000 he was Clinical Assistant Professor in Periodontology and Associate Scientist in the Laboratory for Applied Periodontal and Craniofacial Regeneration at Temple University in Philadelphia. While in the USA he was involved in research using rhBMP-2 for periodontal and alveolar regeneration. He has been involved in preclinical and clinical research involving GTR/GBR since 1991, has authored numerous articles and lectures both nationally and internationally on topics related to tissue regeneration and dental implants. Dr Danesh-Meyer retuned to Auckland, New Zealand in 2000 and established the Institute of Dental Implants & Periodontics. He is a Fellow of the ICOI, ITI member, Lecturer for Global Institute for Dental Education.

Jamil Alayan, AustraliaJamil Alayan is a Periodontist with an interest in implant surgery and oral tissue augmentation. He was awarded a scholarship from the International Team of Implantology (ITI) in 2007 to attend the University of Florida (U.S) where he completed a clinical fellowship in oral surgery. He is currently completing his PhD at Griffith University School of Dentistry examining bone grafting in maxillary sinus augmentation, which was recently awarded an NHMRC scholarship. Jamil has received an FRACDS in Periodontology and fellowships from the ITI and the International Collage of Dentistry. He has served as the past president of Australian Society of Periodontology (QLD) and past treasurer of the Australian Osseointegration Society (Federal). He maintains a specialist private practice in Brisbane city and has been actively involved in teaching and training at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level.



Lisa Heitz-Mayfield, AustraliaProfessor Heitz-Mayfield received a Masters in Periodontology (1996) and Odont Dr (1998) from Lund University, Sweden. She received a scholarship at the Brånemark Osseointegration Centre, Sweden, and was awarded an ITI scholarship at the University of Berne, Switzerland where she became Head of the Oral Microbiology Research Laboratory, from 1999-2003. Received the André Schroeder Research Prize in Implant Dentistry. Professor Heitz-Mayfield is active in research in implant dentistry and periodontology and has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally. She has more than 48 publications in peer reviewed international journals and is author of the Peri-implant infection chapter of the latest edition of the Textbook: Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry and the ITI Treatment Guide on Implant-related Complications. Current positions include Adjunct Professor at the International Research Collaborative, The University of Western Australia, The University of Notre Dame, Associate Professor at The University of Sydney, and at The University of Hong Kong. Chair of the ITI Research Committee, and member of the ITI Board of Directors. Editor in Chief of Clinical Oral Implants Research. Maintains a specialist periodontal practice in Perth, Western Australia.

Ivan Darby, AustraliaProfessor Ivan Darby is Head of Periodontics and is responsible for the Melbourne Dental School’s specialisation program in Periodontics, DClinDent (Perio). In addition, he also has involvement in the Grad Dip Clin Dent (implants), DDS, BDSc and BOH periodontics and implant surgery components. Ivan also practices as a Periodontist in Moonee Ponds. He is a past President of the ANZ division and the Asia Pacific Region of the IADR. In addition, he has been president of the Australian Society of Periodontology (Victorian branch) and currently serves as Editor of the Society’s federal journal, Periodontology. An active researcher, he has published on periodontal pathogenesis, microbiology and treatment outcomes, as well as implant dentistry. Ivan is also an active local, national and international speaker.

Robert De Poi, AustraliaDr Robert De Poi graduated with a BDSc. from the University of Melbourne in 1984, Dux of his graduating year. He then maintained a general practice for many years during which time he developed an interest in Periodontics. He was awarded the Kenneth JG Sutherland Prize by the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in 1987 after completing his RACDS. He was on the RACDS Victorian Regional Committee for 10 years and chair between 1995 and 1997. Robert registered as a Periodontist after receiving his Master of Science and Certificate in Periodontics from the Indiana University School of Dentistry. He was awarded the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation Dr. & Mrs. Gerald M. Kramer Scholarship for Excellence in 2002. He now maintains specialist practice in Moonee Ponds and is an honorary Fellow of the Melbourne Dental School and involved in teaching in the Graduate Periodontal Program at the University of Melbourne. He has an interest in research through the ADAVB Evident Foundation and is a co-investigator of study on implant complications in private practice. He is currently on the Professional Provident Fund Advisory Committee for the ADAVB and is an ITI Fellow.

Saso Ivanovski, AustraliaSaso Ivanovski graduated with BDSc (Honours) from the University of Queensland Dental School in 1993. He subsequently completed a BDentSt research degree in 1995, following which he was awarded a National Health and Medical Research (NH&MRC) postgraduate scholarship and completed a PhD in 2000. This was followed by specialist training leading to the award of an MDSc in Periodontology in 2002. In 2006, Saso was appointed the inaugural Chair and Professor of Periodontology at the Griffith University School of Dentistry and Oral Health where he leads the specialist training program in periodontology. He currently combines this position with his part time specialist practice in periodontics and surgical implant dentistry. Saso is a fellow of the International Team of Implantology (ITI) and past federal president of the Australasian Osseointegration Society (AOS) and the Australian Society of Periodontology (ASP). Saso has published over 100 articles in the peer-reviewed international literature, has lectured nationally and internationally and has been the recipient of numerous research grants and awards. He leads an internationally recognized research group with an interest in oro-dental regeneration, tissue engineering and implantology.


Greg Peake, AustraliaDr Greg Peake is a specialist Periodontist in Canberra. His practice is restricted to primary and revision implant surgery and he has been exclusively implant based for over 12 years. His periodontal training was completed in Melbourne and he has qualifications with both the Royal Colleges of England and Edinburgh. He is a Fellow of The Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the ITI and currently has a special interest in managing peri-implant complications.

Steven Soukoulis, AustraliaSteven completed his undergraduate training at University of Adelaide in 1996, followed by a 2 year diploma in clinical dentistry, after which he entered specialist training in periodontics, which he completed in 2001. He maintains a specialist periodontal practice in Adelaide. Steven has served as President of the Australian Society of Periodontology. He is currently a fellow with the International Team of Implantology (ITI). He has a particular clinical interest in implantology and bone grafting.

Axel Spahr, AustraliaProf. Axel Spahr is Head of Periodontics at the Sydney Dental Hospital and Head of the Discipline Periodontics at the University of Sydney. He was the former Head of Periodontics at the University of Ulm in Germany and has worked at various international universities and research facilities. He has a further training in microbiology and molecular biology and extensive experience in basic science research, animal research and clinical research. A/Prof. Spahr’s research interest includes periodontal regeneration, bone regeneration, periodontitis and systemic diseases as well as antimicrobial therapy.He has lead large externally funded research projects and is collaborating with leading international research groups and companies in the field of periodontology, implantology and bone regeneration. He is author of numerous publications in international peer-reviewed dental and medical journals and has presented his work on professional conferences worldwide.

Jonathan Leichter, New ZealandProf. Jonathan Leichter is the Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Sciences at the University of Otago School of Dentistry. Dr. Leichter joined the faculty after 20 years in full time private practice limited to periodontology and implant dentistry in New York and Boston. After his dental training at Tufts University, he went on to obtain his specialist training at Harvard University. He is active in clinical practice, research and dental education. Since 2002, he has mentored post-doctoral students in periodontology, endodontics and prosthodontics. His research interests and numerous international peer reviewed publications are in the fields of Periodontology, Implant Dentistry, Dental Trauma and Laser applications in dentistry. He has lectured throughout New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Europe and the US.

Chris Evans, AustraliaDr Evans completed his bachelor degree at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and his masters degree in Prosthodontic practice in Brighton, Melbourne and has a branch practice in Albury, NSW. He has been a consultant Prosthodontist to the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force and a Clinical Demonstrator for Undergraduate and Postgraduate students. Dr Evans is a full member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Prosthodontists and is and ITI fellow. He has lectured extensively at national and international meetings on implant related topics and restorative dentistry. He is a past president of the Australian Prosthodontic Society, Victorian Branch and Victorian Crown and Bridge society. He is currently on the editorial board of Clinical Oral Implants Research. He has been involved in multi-centre dental implant research projects as well as clinical research projects in private practice, with several notable publications in peer reviewed journals on dental implants.

Implant related soft tissue management - contemporary strategies for biological and aesthetical long-term success

Over the past 50 years, dental implants have evolved into a very straightforward treatment option for replacing missing or unmaintainable teeth. The ongoing development of implant therapy is in particular characterised by an increasing understanding for the surgical soft-tissue management as essential aspect in matters of successful treatment outcomes and for the quality and quantity of the resulting peri-implant soft tissues as the key elements for biological and esthetic long-term success.

This practical workshop, therefore, goes deep into the details of contemporary clinical concepts with regard to the handling and reconstruction of soft-tissues surrounding implants. Alongside the theoretical and practical background the most innovative strategies will be covered and debated extensively with the aim of offering course participants the knowledge required to apply implant therapy successful in daily clinical routine. Last but not least the participants will carry out a series of clinically relevant hands-on exercises with the aid of magnification lenses and under the supervision of Dr. Otto Zuhr.

Mastering soft-tissue deficiencies

The main focus of the course is on the treatment of gingival recession defects using Geistlich Mucograft together with a corronally advanced flap as well as the gain of keratinised tissue. Geistlich Mucograft is specifically designed for soft-tissue regeneration. Its 3D-collagen matrix favours early vascularisation, soft-tissue integration and optimal wound healing. Geistlich Mucograft is the optimal alternative to a soft-tissue graft for gaining keratinised tissue and root coverage. Geistlich Mucograft and Geistlich Mucograft Seal will be shown as alternatives to autogenous grafts and soft-tissue punch procedures.

Advanced suturing techniques is a strong feature of the hands-on. Practitioners will have the unique opportunity to “Develop their skills” both theoretical and practical, in the company of Harvard educated Dr. Jonathan Leichter and Geistlich Biomaterials, the Leaders in Dental Hard and Soft-Tissue Regeneration.

Treatment of Peri-implantitis - Meeting the Clinical Challenge

At the completion of the workshop participants will know• How to diagnose peri-implantitis• How to identify patients at risk for peri-implant disease• The key elements of anti-infective non-surgical, surgical and regenerative treatment protocols• Critical decision making: the choice between resection, regeneration, explantation• Key factors in prevention of peri-implantitis - maintenance care protocols for patients with implants

The Osteology Foundation bridges researches and practitioners worldwide. Its key activities include organised National and International Symposia for oral tissue regeneration, funding scientific studies and research scholarships, as well as training in research methodology and publication of research guidelines.

The independent foundation was established by Dr. Peter Geistlich and Geistlich Pharma AG in 2003. It is steered by a Foundation Board, comprising internationally renowned experts, that oversees all projects and activities.
