Strathy North Wind Farm Project Newsletter Strathy North is a 33 turbine wind farm located approximately 7km south of Strathy village in Sutherland. It is currently under construction and due to be fully operational by the end of 2015. This is the fourth in a series of regular newsletters that SSE is producing to help keep you informed and up to date with the main construction phase of works at Strathy North wind farm. These newsletters have been developed following requests from the local community and we hope that you find them helpful and interesting. Previous editions of this newsletter, together with further information on Strathy North wind farm can be found on our project website at www.sse.com/strathynorth or requested from our liaison manager (details overleaf). Feb 2015 Introduction Turbine deliveries The deliveries of the components for the 33 turbines at Strathy North are expected to start around mid February and will finish by the end of the Summer, with the site fully operational by the end of this year. Due to the size and length of these components (blades, tower sections, and nacelles) they require to be delivered by ‘abnormal load’ vehicles which are longer and wider than ordinary HGVs and tend to travel more slowly due to their size. The turbine components will be picked up at Scrabster harbour and then transported west along the A836, in convoy, to the site entrance at Baligill. We have made a commitment that no abnormal loads will leave Scrabster until after 9am in order to avoid disruption in the mornings to school runs, people travelling to work, and Dounreay traffic. All abnormal loads will be escorted by the police and access will be maintained for emergency vehicles at all times. Further information about these deliveries will be made available locally, and on our website at www.sse.com/strathynorth nearer the time. Since our November newsletter construction on site has progressed well, despite the wild weather. Gunn’s Kirkton quarry in Melvich has been keeping us well supplied with concrete and the pouring phase for the 33 turbine bases has gone smoothly. The remaining few bases will be finished in early February, weather permitting. RJ McLeod, who has been our principal contractor for the civil phase of the project is now in the process of handing over to our turbine supplier, Senvion (formerly known as REpower), who will manage the turbine delivery and erection phase of the project over the next few months. Community fundsAbnormal load ‘trial run’On Thursday 15th January our turbine supplier,Senvion, undertook a ‘trial run’ to test the routewhich the abnormal load vehicles will travel whenthey deliver the turbine components to site.

An extended vehicle which simulated an abnormalload was used and police escorted it whilst ittravelled between Scrabster and Baligill.

The trial run was completed with no issues and allforecast pinch points were navigated as expected, with the police controlling traffic where necessary. The site entrance at Baligill will be widened slightlybefore the turbine deliveries begin.
