• A spirit tries to slow the woman down so her husband can catch up to her.

3. What does the spirit do to help the man?• The spirit tries to help the man catch up by

making the woman slow down, presenting her with first huckleberries, then all the other berries, then the blooms of all the trees of the forest.

4. What finally slows the woman down?• Strawberries finally slow her down.

5. Why is the man unable to overtake his wife?• The man cannot overtake his wife

because her anger causes her to walk very fast.

6. Why doesn’t the woman slow down?• She doesn’t notice the fruit.

7. Why does the spirit decide to create a new fruit?

• The spirit decides to create a new fruit that grows close to the ground so the woman will stop walking and forget her anger.

8. Why do the strawberries make the woman slow down?

• The woman crushes the strawberries under her feet as she walks, releasing a pleasant scent. She stops to look at the berries she has never seen before.
