May 25, 2017 Pastor’s Ponderings Street n Steeple It is that time of year again—June. June brings graduations, winding up of the busy- time of ministry andAnnual Conference. Annual Conference is both the name of the geo- graphic group of United Methodist churches - and it is the name for the annual meeting that we United Methodist Christians use to celebrate ministry, remember those who have died, ordain and commission clergy - and find out who is going where! It is the very last thing after the long meeting that all the clergy and laity representatives from all over the Virginia Conference attend. The June edition of the Advocate (the VA UMC magazine - Appointment Edition) is distributed, and one by one the District Superintendents (our local geographic area – district - supervisors) come to the podium and announce that the appointments of the …..district are correct as printed (or have corrections). At the end, the Bishop moves to the podium and fixesthe appointments, making them official. The conference is adjourned, and clergy go home: to finish packing, if they are moving; or catch up on their email, phone calls and visits if they are not. Sooner or later, every United Methodist Church is affected by a move. I am pleased to say that this year is NOT such a year for CSUMC. Pastor Joanna and I are very pleased that we have been pro- jected to return to continue our ministry together with you at Cave Spring. We are in the midst of an exciting time at CSUMC. We share in vibrant worship, engaging formation, authentic connection and passionate service. Over the last few weeks, we have shared in a strategic visioningprocess to dis- cern Gods dreams for ministry through our church family. Many of you participated in the Dreaming Meetingsorganized around our faith journey process (Experience God, Grow Together, Serve Oth- ers), where we brainstormed goals for our shared ministry through 2022. The time we spent together was exciting and fruitful. Many ideas were shared as common themes bubbled up. On Tuesday, May 23 rd , Extended Council approved the following Core4 Goals for 2022 that will provide creativity, direction and focus to our ministry as we seek to become LOVE (the love of Christ) to share LOVE”: We will be a church that celebrates that we are a hospitable and welcoming church within the walls and beyond. We will be a church that provides avenues of connection for ALL people to authentic relationship. We will be a church that cultivates equipped followers that do ministry daily. We will be a church that wants to serve the many faces of Jesus and actively participates in serv- ing the worldwide church with our neighbors near and far. God is calling CSUMC, both clergy and laity, to be people who are authentically sharing the love of Christ. God is leading us to focus on sharing the hospitality of Christ, so we can connect in relation- ship with Christ and each other. God desires that we be Christ followers who are equipped to lead and to share their story about life with Jesus, so we can be actively engaged in ministries that touch the lives of Gods people in our church, community and world. It will be exciting to see how God will use the CSUMC family to make these goals come alive. Keep the eyes of your heart open to how God is leading you to be part of the Core4 for 2022! Blessings! Pastor’s Ponderings

Street ’n Steeple

It is that time of year again—June. June brings graduations, winding up of the busy-time of ministry and… Annual Conference. Annual Conference is both the name of the geo-graphic group of United Methodist churches - and it is the name for the annual meeting that we United Methodist Christians use to celebrate ministry, remember those who have died, ordain and commission clergy - and find out who is going where! It is the very last thing after the long meeting that all the clergy and laity representatives from all over the Virginia Conference attend. The June edition of the Advocate (the VA UMC magazine - Appointment Edition) is distributed, and one by one the District Superintendents (our local geographic area – district - supervisors) come to the podium and announce that the “appointments of the …..district are correct as printed (or have corrections).” At the end, the Bishop moves to the podium and “fixes” the appointments, making them official. The conference is adjourned, and clergy go home: to finish packing, if they are moving; or catch up on their email, phone calls and visits if they are not. Sooner or later, every United Methodist Church is affected by a move. I am pleased to say that this year is NOT such a year for CSUMC. Pastor Joanna and I are very pleased that we have been pro-jected to return to continue our ministry together with you at Cave Spring. We are in the midst of an exciting time at CSUMC. We share in vibrant worship, engaging formation, authentic connection and passionate service. Over the last few weeks, we have shared in a “strategic visioning” process to dis-cern God’s dreams for ministry through our church family. Many of you participated in the “Dreaming Meetings” organized around our faith journey process (Experience God, Grow Together, Serve Oth-ers), where we brainstormed goals for our shared ministry through 2022. The time we spent together was exciting and fruitful. Many ideas were shared as common themes bubbled up. On Tuesday, May 23rd, Extended Council approved the following Core4 Goals for 2022 that will provide creativity, direction and focus to our ministry as we seek to “become LOVE (the love of Christ) to share LOVE”:

We will be a church that celebrates that we are a hospitable and welcoming church within the walls and beyond.

We will be a church that provides avenues of connection for ALL people to authentic relationship. We will be a church that cultivates equipped followers that do ministry daily. We will be a church that wants to serve the many faces of Jesus and actively participates in serv-

ing the worldwide church with our neighbors near and far.

God is calling CSUMC, both clergy and laity, to be people who are authentically sharing the love of Christ. God is leading us to focus on sharing the hospitality of Christ, so we can connect in relation-ship with Christ and each other. God desires that we be Christ followers who are equipped to lead and to share their story about life with Jesus, so we can be actively engaged in ministries that touch the lives of God’s people in our church, community and world. It will be exciting to see how God will use the CSUMC family to make these goals come alive. Keep the eyes of your heart open to how God is leading you to be part of the Core4 for 2022!

Blessings! Denise

On June 4th we will worship as a whole church family at one worship service at 10:30 AM,

in the Sanctuary. We will be celebrating Confirmation as we welcome the confirmands

into membership, as well as honor our graduates. All this will be shared in a very special worship service, including Holy Communion,

designed and led by our youth.

Sunday, June 4 Confirmation, Graduate and Youth Sunday

CSUMC’s Children’s Wednesday Night group, FaithWeaver Friends, has completed their year-long service project, Blessing Bags!

Throughout the 2016-2017 school year, they collected donated items, and used a portion of their very own Noisy Offering, and assembled 100 bags! These bags are being handed out to YOU at our June 4th service in hopes that you will join FWF in being a part of this amazing ministry. We would like to encourage your family to take a bag home and give it to someone whom you feel may benefit from receiving this blessing.

A very heartfelt “thank-you” to everyone who donated items toward this project!

Seventy years ago at the 1947 Virginia Annual Conference, a report of the Board of Hospi-tals and Homes was adopted which requested a sacrificial offering of thanksgiving and ex-pression of gratitude for the legacies of faith of the older adults in our lives and congrega-tions. This was the first offering to support the mission and ministry of the Virginia Confer-ence “Home for the Aged.” The Virginia Annual Conference continues to dedicate a special

offering time period for the Samaritan Program of Virginia United Methodist Homes, Inc. (VUMH). Over the years, the name and time frame of the special offering have changed, but the focus has remained the same: to ensure the personal security and peace of mind of our most vulnerable residents. During the 2016 fiscal year, the Samaritan Program provided $851,177 to help residents remain in their “home” at their respective VUMH communites. In the last 10 years, over $8 million has been provided in benevolent care support for residents.

Your gift to the Samaritan Offering supports residents who have been blessed by longevity but have outlived their financial resources. Samaritan gifts are not used for operational, capital, or administrative costs, but are instead made available only for benevolent care. Your gift ensures someone’s personal security and peace of mind.

Samaritan Offering gifts, which are received from Mother’s Day, May 14th , through Father’s Day, June 18th, may be designated to any of our Virginia United Methodist Homes communities. Undesignated gifts will be used where the need is greatest. Both designated and undesignated gifts serve the same purpose: to provide finan-cial assistance to residents whose ability to pay for care has been diminished. Please consider making a gift today to help those who are in need of your generosity. You truly can make a difference in someone’s life. Contributions can be made through the church regular or special offering. You can also visit the VUMH website at www.vumh.org or Facebook page @VUMHInc. to give online. For more information, call VUMH at (804) 474-8700 or (888) 673-1031 toll free.

Bishop Lewis has announced the annual conference mission offering goal of $200,000 to focus on the following missional priority projects:

$50,000 Cambodia - For continued support for our partnership with the Methodist Mission in Cambodia as they move toward being an autonomous Methodist Church. $25,000 Brazil – For our continued long term support of the Shade and Fresh Water ministry with at-risk children across several conferences in the Methodist Church of Brazil. $25,000 Mozambique – Our partnership with the United Methodist Church of Mozambique focuses on ed-ucation by providing lay training resources that strengthens their discipleship and witness across both conferences in Mozambique. $50,000 Virginia Long Term Disaster Recovery – We are committed to a long term response to those whose lives were changed by tornadoes and hurricane Matthew in 2016. The funding of the recovery will allow further teams to answer the call to make a compassionate response. $25,000 Ethnic Minority Missional Ministries – Funds for grants to go toward developing ministry out-reach in the conference to immigrants and other marginalized groups. $25,000 Virginia Volunteers in Mission – To provide funds available to small membership faith communi-ties, who wish to engage in mission, that may lack resources.

You may share your support either using online giving via the website or by marking your check “Annual Conference Offering.”

Patsy Ford, Office Manager brought to you by Staff Parish Relations Committee

Our own Patsy has been employed in her current position by the CSUMC family since January, 2001. She was born Patsy Herbst, the middle of three sisters, in Sewickley, PA. just outside of Pittsburgh. There she attended catholic schools until her father was transferred by his job to Richmond and the family moved to Mid-lothian, VA. There she continued her education and graduated from Midlothian High School. Following high school, she enrolled in Madison College in Harrisonburg, VA, graduating with a double major in Marketing and Management from James Madison University. Not many people get to enter a college and then graduate from a university without changing schools. After completing her education, she decided to look for employment in either Richmond or Roanoke. A friend, who was from Roanoke, told her he had a friend at the Virginia Employment Commission in Roanoke who could probably help her find a job. Surprise, surprise, it turns out this well-connected friend of a friend was none other than Karl Ford. Her first job was in her field, doing marketing research for Martin Research, Inc., a company who no longer operates in this area. It turns out she became very well-connected here in Roanoke, for after being on the job for a little over a year, Patsy Herbst changed her last name to Ford. Patsy and Karl have two children: Michael, the oldest, and a daughter, Heather. Michael is married and lives in San Francisco, while Heather lives and works in Washington DC. Karl is a Realtor with MKB and has been 35 years in his field. Patsy left work just before Heather was born and did not return to the workplace until both children were in school. She then became employed at Davidson’s downtown store in their office. While considering new employment, a CSUMC church member let her know that our church was look-ing to hire, and that lead to her being hired here during the Bill Logan tenure. Patsy is a member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, where she has served on the Parish Council. Away from work she likes reading, jig-saw puzzles, doing crosswords, spending time outside and taking care of her kittens and Mr. Turtle. During these seventeen years at CSUMC, she has worked for seven different ministers. Patsy expresses how much she likes her job as well as the feeling of connection with members of our church. Her responsibilities are many, and I know she would delight in being told how much we appreciate the work she does for us.

~Doug Hankins, SPRC

CSUMC will be represented by our Lay Annual Conference Delegates, Debbie Jones and Bonnie Dick-son, as well as by Pastor Joanna and Pastor Denise. We also have some in our church family who will be attending Annual Conference, either representing the Roanoke District, or because they serve on a Conference Committee. Annual Conference will be held in Hampton, Virginia June 16-18. Please keep the Conference and all participants, including Bishop Sharma Lewis, in your prayers. We are blessed to welcome Rev. Wayne Carter to lead worship at 8:45 and 11:00, and Mr. Dave Ross will be leading Well-spring at 9:00, along with other lay participants, Sunday, June 18.

From Your Lay Leader December 2016 –May 2017

Hi, fellow members and friends at Cave Spring United Methodist Church. Can you feel it? I can. It is the love of God moving in and through us and helping us share that love with each other and those in our midst whom we have yet to meet.

During the advent season, I spent much time in the presence of those I love. This began with The Lovefeast, a UMW fellowship luncheon, a potluck dinner, Lunch with Lowe, and the Christmas cantata “Savior of the Na-tions Come,” Christmas Eve service, ending on Christmas day. Yes, I have a husband and mother whom I love, but in addition to them, I love all of you. We share the love of Christ and for our church. I have found no greater satisfaction in my life, than being part of something wonderful with like-minded people. That some-thing is much greater than ourselves.

Our new Bishop, Sharma Lewis, visited Cave Spring UMC for our district meeting in November. The service was a lively and motivational look at the direction Bishop Lewis would like to see the Virginia Conference move. That move is “To Take Jesus to the Streets.” the title of her sermon. We need to share the love of Je-sus with "skin on” (stole this from Denise), in the world. We need to continue to develop and nurture our hearts for discipleship.

Now in 2017, good things are happening around us. We have new members joining our fellowship. Our church has become a safer place for our members, staff, and the children who are nurtured and taught in a loving Christian atmosphere. The Wesley Hall windows are absolutely gorgeous and prominently display the cross. We have dedicated Christians serving on committees, leading our Sunday school classes, heading up our ministry teams, hosting small groups, working with our youth, etc., determined to help make decisions for the betterment of Cave Spring United Methodist Church. This is lovingly done under the very capable leader-ship of Pastor Denise and Pastor Joanna and through the workings of our wonderful staff. The way I see it, with God as our ultimate guide and leader, we cannot lose.

We just now have finished the Lenten season, another significant time in our Christian lives. Now, we are be-ginning a time to “Dream for our Future” at CSUMC. There will be opportunities for us to come together and grow in our Christian lives together. We need the input of all our lay people (that means you and me) to share our visions for what we want our church and our ministry to look like, to make us feel proud and excited to be members here.

According to an excerpt from material Martha Stokes shared in a Lay Leader training course, “All Baptized Christians are called into Ministry.” Through the rite of baptism, yes our sins are forgiven and we have new life; but, we are also called to be in ministry. Believe me, I am no authority on discipleship. All I have done is love Jesus, be present, and learn more about what it is to be United Methodist, and what is going on under the roof of Cave Spring United Methodist Church. We begin to do this in small groups, worship, mission work, etc. I would encourage all people interested in learning more to participate in The Journey class. Membership is not a prerequisite, and membership does not mean there is nothing more for us to learn. Also, join a Sunday School class. I feel this is the best way to feel a part of something and get to know people, as well as figure out where you can begin your walk of faith. If there is something else on your heart you would like to get involved in, please come talk with me, Jill-Marie, Joanna or Denise. Whatever makes us feel closer to each other and to God. In doing this, our hearts grow, and our path on our journey of discipleship is made clearer. See you in church, Bobbie Hanby

May 25, 2017 Page 6

“Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and truth.” 1 John 3:18

This summer, like many summers before, I will plant flowers and herbs and some vegetables. Nothing impressive. And because I am not at all a pro-gardener, and I am still very much learning, I will have to remind myself on the days it doesn’t rain, on the days I get busy, that I need to wa-ter, check, trim, and feed these plants. Things don’t grow without some action. And I believe that is true about our faith life. And summer is a perfect time to grow in faith. And June will be a month you get a ton of invitations to grow. You may grow on our Lake Junaluska trip through powerful worship; you might grow at VBS being a leader in ministry here at our church, loving and serving those younger than you. You can model what it means to be a Christian to them. You may grow on a week-long time of hard work and fun on Appalachia Service Project. The theme this year is LOVE IN ACTION—and this summer at CSUMC you can certainly be LOVE IN ACTION!

Because we believe this to be true: “God has given us all the abilities and resources we could possibly need to serve others.” God has entrusted us to carry out this work by showing love and compassion to the hopeless. Recognizing need is important, but our call is incomplete without action. LOVE IN ACTION re-quires sacrifice on our part. LOVE IN ACTION demands concentration and effort. We must be moved be-yond nice words or general politeness. God has chosen you to passionately use your gifts to so that you cannot just love, but LOVE IN ACTION!” - ASP Love in Action Study ~Pastor Joanna

Mission Encounter July 28-29

Mission Encounter is a cooperative event sponsored by the Virginia Conference Missional Ministries Board (formerly the Board of Global Ministry) and the Virginia Confer-ence United Methodist Wom-en. This event offers a wonderful opportunity for the whole congre-gation to come alive to mission, by participating in an exciting week-end mission education experience. There are classes for adults where men, women, clergy and laity alike come to learn and be involved in mission groups by choosing one class out of three choices - a spir-itual growth study, geographical study or social issue. This year, July 28-29, the classes offered will be climate justice, living as a covenant community and the missionary conference of The UMC in the Unit-ed States (Red Bird, Oklahoma and Alaska). Contact Gail Sutcliffe with questions at 703-490-3381. Event will be held at Bon Air UMC in Chesterfield.
