Since their ground-breaking short Street of Crocodiles ($%&')—selected by Terry Gilliam as one of the top ten best animated films of all time—the Quay Brothers have produced more than two dozen shorts and two features, Institute Benjamenta ($%%() and !e PianoTuner of EarthQuakes ("##(). !ese, as well as a compilation of short films entitled Phantom Museums are available on DVD in the U.S. from Zeitgeist Films.

!e Quay Brothers’ Mütter Museum film follows on the precedent of three other commissioned films: Anamorphosis ($%%$), produced for the Program for Art on Film, a joint venture of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Trust; !e Phantom Museum: Random Forays into the Vaults of Sir Henry Wellcome’s Medical Collection ("##)), created for the Wellcome Trust, London; and Inventorium of Traces: Jan Potocki at "a#cut Castle ("##%), filmed in the storied home museum in Poland of the legendary eastern European aristocrat and author of the epic Saragossa Manuscript. !e Quays have also made numerous theater and ballet films, music videos, and advertisements, and designed décors for theater and opera productions. !eir Tony-nominated set designs for Ionesco’s !e Chairs won acclaim on Broadway. !ey have most recently completed two short animated films, !e Mask (Maska), based on a story by Stanis*aw Lem, and Wonderwood, commissioned by Comme des Garçons.

Identical twins Stephen and Timothy Quay were born in Pleasant Valley, just outside of Philadelphia, and have resided and worked in London since the early $%+#s, having emigrated upon graduation from the University of the Arts (then the Philadelphia College of Art) to attend the Royal College of Art.

At the invitation of !e Arts Council England and London the Quay Brothers are Artistic Directors of the Leeds Canvas, which will use the entire city as the canvas for a series of art interventions and installations in one of the major projects of the London "#$" Cultural Olympiad.
