Tegan Russell

We had a sit down chat with this young visual artist from Wollongong’s own Now You See Me Gallery.

ST: When did you start making art? TR: I started making art as young as I can remember, I made art before I could talk.

ST: How have your interests and techniques developed over time? TR: I have always been interested in life and then I use my art to understand and process life, I have always done art for fun and art has always taken up the major-ity of my life. Over time I have received all sorts of productive criticism and opin-ions about my art and each of these have been a challenge to process, some more than others. These ideas have helps shaped my practice and help me get clear on what is important to me. Which is to create from the heart, create in the moment and let the art surprise me.

ST: What is your favourite thing about making art? TR: My Favourite thing about making art is its magical nature, there is nothing like creating something with your own hands. Having a vision in your mind and bringing it to reality or simply letting something unravel in front of your eyes. Creating a painting is like giving birth, there is often a painful struggle but in the end your left with something that is a piece of you and it teaches you things about yourself your didn’t know and you have a love and connection with it.

ST: How did opening the gallery space all come about? TR: I have always wanted to do more than sit in my own studio isolated from the world and other artists and create art. I wanted to bring artists together to inspire one another and be friends. I thought of the idea of creating an online gallery while rollerblading one summers day, then I slowly took steps to creating it. A space came up for rent so i thought i would do a physical gallery project alongside the online version.

ST: How does the gallery operate? TR: The gallery is a pop up gallery and online space. The physical gallery in Wollongong exists for 5 months in this time we have had a different exhibition every week, exhibiting over 25 artists in this time period. The online gallery runs parallel to this showing the work of the artist the week before. we will be producing an annual magazine featuring all the now you see me artists of that year.

ST: What does the future hold for your work personally? TR: I will be having a solo show on the 12th of December alongside the mag-azine launch to celebrate the Wollongong space. I will then be moving to Mel-bourne for 6 months where I will immerse myself in my own art and develop the back end of the business, I will then be moving to Sydney at the end of next year, where I will further my career as an artist and look at opening a space there. I want to be a successful exhibiting artist as well as a gallery owner sup-porting emerging artists.

ST: What shows do you and/or the gallery have coming up in the next month?TR: We will be having a group show of all the current now you see me artists on the 14th of November and the following week will be an artist market and Christmas print sale.

The Surry Hills Festival.

The sun was out and shining in inner-city Sydney for a day filled with live music, pop-up shops, performance artists and good vibes for the annual Surry Hills Festival. The laneways were filled with floppy hats and rolled up chinos as punters packed the streets. We went along and caught some of the action...

Street Talk:What has made your summer vibes playlist?

“The new alt-J album (This Is All Yours) is on my playlist right now. Loved the first album so had to get the new one. It’s got that nice relaxing feel to it with that soft voice. Perfect for my summer.” Katrina 22 “Well I just downloaded Gorgon City’s new album Sirens and I definitely think that there are some tracks in there that will definitely be on repeat this summer. Highly recommend giving it a listen if you’ve liked what they have already done this year.” Paul 24

“Well last summer Childish Gambino dropped 3005 which was a killer track for the summer and now he has just dropped his new mixtape. I’m expecting that there is going to be some fresh beats and cool rhymes on this new one like he had on his last album and I think these will definitely be on my summer playlist” Lucas 21

“I’m hoping that Kendrick Lamar’s new album will be out by the end of the year. I loved his last album like most people did, it was that good I’m still playing it. If it’s as good as good kid m.A.A.d city, then that will be my summer soundtrack.” Anthony 22

“I’ve heard some of Vance Joy’s new stuff on Triple J and I’m liking it. It’s impos-sible to not like that voice. His voice will definitely put me in that happy summer mood.” Brittany 21

“It’s going to be too hard to decide on what will be my soundtrack to summer. Come summer time there is going to be those songs which pop up and make your summer. I think as long as I got Triple J on I’m bound to get great soundtrack to my summer.” Emma 22
