What a fantastic night at Blundstone Arena! Gentleman looking dapper and ladies looking lovely. It was a wonderful way to finish the season, which included the extremely important awarding of life

membership to Kath Westland. It is well deserved. Congratulations Kath. I must take this opportunity however to offer an apology. I did not acknowledge the presence of life member Glenn Tremayne at the dinner. My eyesight (as well as my voice at the time) was obviously faulty and I omitted to

acknowledge his presence. Sorry Glenn. The other apology is that there are many hard working members of the Club, and to acknowledge them we had certificates of appreciation. Due to no one’s fault, they were not awarded on the night. Look out for them in the upcoming weeks.Whilst the season is over, it is just starting behind the scenes, and there are people working hard. We are always looking for assistance. If you would like to play a role (even a small one) feel free to contact Kathy Fahey or myself – “many hands make light work”. The new committee members will be officially announced in the next edition.Jane Ansell – President, Derwent HC.

Glen Freeman revs up his charges for one final effort at 3 quarter time in the AHL final.

The Tigers went on to win in a shoot out.

BACK-TO-BACK GOLDDougal Middleton (pictured right), famous for his flowing golden locks and obscene miss-trap in the 2008 Southern Tasmanian Grand Final, has backed up his 2013 Gold Medal, achieved alongside fellow Derwent boy Hamish Hall, by winning the Singapore Indoor Hockey Challenge with an Australian U23 side. Dougal not only starred at the international tournament but also lead from the front as captain. The event concludes a golden run for the dynamic forward as he clinched the Western Australian title with YMCC before heading to Adelaide as part of Tasmania’s AHL Gold medal clinching team – scoring a crucial last gasp goal against South Australia in the process. Fortunately for Dougal the price of gold has been dropping, much like his cricketing days in the courdon, so his re-entry into Australia should see him escape avoid breaking any import quotas. Congratulations again Junior, love your work!!

The victorious Tassie Tigers after winning Tasmania’s maiden AHL title in Adelaide, 2014.

In what will be remembered as one of Tasmania’s greatest ever team sporting achievements, the Tassie Tigers won the 2014 Australian Hockey League in Adelaide and Derwent was heavily represented in this historical team.Sporting five past and present players, the head coach, team doctor and number 1 ticket holder in the stands, the mighty strikers played a leading role in this momentous achievement. Paul Ancher, Geoff Cock, Tim Deavin (VC), Dougal Middleton and Billy Shaw led the charge on the front line while Glen Freeman pulled the strings and Ian “foss” Middleton patched up the wounded so they could return to the fray. Jenny Middleton was ever-present in the stands with her famously strong voice delivering what could only be described as constructive feedback to the men in white.Derwent’s involvement doesn’t end there as also showing strong support were our under 13 state representatives James Rawson and Ewan Vickery along with brother Ruben and dad Mark.

Glen Freeman, who led the Derwent Men to 3 successive premierships from 2006-08, can now add an AHL Gold to his bulging coaching trophy cabinet. After the match Glen spoke glowingly of the support he had received over the journey, none more so than from TIS head coach Andrew MacDonald

who had been prevented from taking his position as assistant coach with the team only days prior to departure through illness.Tim Deavin was voted Tasmania’s player of the tournament by the Tigers group after producing a tournament full of outrageous displays of brilliance.

Our Tassie Tigers Billy Shaw, Tim Deavin, Geoff Cock, Paul Ancher and Dougal Middleton share the spoils of the AHL victory with Tiger Cubs Ruben Hoey, Ewan Vickery and James Rawson.

An insight into new life member: Kathy WestlandSpoken by Andrea StreetMost people here know Kathy’s hard work and achievements as Junior Girl’s Co-ordinator and her coaching of junior teams for a number of years and as the driving force behind the Dunalley school hockey teams and their success. She has been a mentor to many young boys and girls who have gone on to have success at Derwent and also state and national level.Kathy continues to play in 4th grade and off the bench for Women’s First Grade. But there’s a bit more to Kathy’s playing career of over 30 years…Kathy began playing hockey in order to keep fit for Tae Kwon Do – Kathy was a Tasmanian and Australian champion and this was her sport of choice. Luckily Kathy’s late sister Marianne (who was one of the women’s club original players) lured Kathy onto the hockey field at the ripe old age of 18 for her first game. Kathy got the hockey bug and it was soon her preferred sport.Kathy and I played together for a number of years in A Grade, and also we were part of the successful “Mothers’ team in second grade in the late 1980s and 1990s. Games were on Saturday afternoons at the sand based Dampier Street complex, with husbands and more than a dozen toddlers and babies on the side lines each week.Kathy played while pregnant with 2 of her 4 children and one season she wore a Derwent jumper for most games, able to hide a quite obvious pregnancy from her totally oblivious team mates, up until the champagne was being sprayed and shared after our grand final win.She continued to play for the Women’s Vets team (and represented Tassie in the masters) and across other grades as needed.Kathy has been a rock of the Derwent Hockey club on and off the field, always willing to lend a hand.
