Another roller-coaster year at the Studium Theologicum Salesianum comes to an end. Beginning with the visit of the relics of Saint John Bosco and ending with the visit of the Holy Father Pope Francis to the Holy Land, it was a year full of study and learning activity for the staff and students. Looking back, we can only be filled with gratitude for the many blessings we have received. We thank God and our many benefactors and friends.

Among the various highlights of the year, we congratulate the 12 students (from 10 countries: Angola, Canada, Ethiopia, India, Italy, Kenya, Philippines, Poland, Uganda & Zambia) who have obtained their Pontifical Bachelor Degree in Sacred Theology. Eleven of these students are candidates to priesthood and are scheduled to be ordained in the coming months. Two more are scheduled for their Baccalaureate exams in September.

We were blessed to have several high-profile personalities lecture at the STS this year. Cardinal Peter Turkson, the President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace delivered a lecture on the 50th Anniversary of Pacem in Terris.

Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald, M. Afr., former Vatican Nuncio to the Arab League and Egypt, and former President of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious dialogue, widely acknowledged to be the leading figure in Christian-Muslim dialogue delivered a series of lectures on understanding Islam. The STS this year focused on a study of Islam.

Rev. Dr. George Palamattathil, Director of Siloam Transformational Leadership Resource Centre in India lectured on “Pastoral Leadership – Psychological Dimensions of Growth and Deficits”.

Rabbi David Rosen the International Director of Interreligious Affairs of the Global Jewish Advocacy Group AJC and its Heilbrunn Institute for international interreligious understanding, and the recipient of the Papal Knighthood for Jewish-Catholic reconciliation delivered a lecture on Ecumenism and relationships with the Jews.

Renowned speaker and author of best-selling books (The Lamb's Supper, Signs of Life), Dr Scott Hahn's lecture on “Consuming the Word: The New Testament and the Eucharist in the Early Church” was facilitated by the Studium Theologicum Salesianum in collaboration with theological institutes and seminaries in the Holy Land.

Rabbi Yonatan Asher Neril, the founder and Executive Director of the Interfaith Center for Sustainable Development lectured on “The Genesis of Human Stewardship of the Earth”.

Lectures on the life and ministry of Alphonse M. Ratisbonne on the occasion of his bi-centenary of birth brought to the STS very distinguished speakers: the Superiors General of the Religious of Our Lady of Sion, Fr. Donizete Ribeiro and Sr. Oonah O'Shean; Br. Elio Passetto; and historians, Professor Emmanuelle Main and Professor Olivier Rota, from Paris.

The STS this year published an audio book entitled, “Songs for a Spiritual Journey”. A documentary film, Diakonikon Stephanou Protomartyros produced by the STS was released in February. The STS presented two books published by Professor Pier Giorgio Gianazza. I figli del Corano and La Famiglia culla della Fede (Children of the Koran, and The Family The Cradle of Faith). This year also marked the launching of the STS Newsletter.

Amidst the various Topographical Visits and Archaeological Excursions undertaken by the STS this year, the guided visits inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, hold special memories. The Study Trip to Turkey remains indelible.

Other important new steps taken this year include the access to hundreds of digital journals provided to the staff and students. The STS library catalogue has also been made available online at the STS website www.jerusalem.unisal.it The Don Bosco Communications Studio equipped for audio and video productions was inaugurated at the STS.

We express our gratitude to the students who are completing their studies and leaving the STS. Special thanks is owed to the staff who have been serving the STS and are moving on to new ministries. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

CREATIVE CORNER!

The Giving Tree

To Uncle Shelby

by Minh Duc Dang, SDB

Bend your boughs, O tree and all your rigid branches, bend!

Once they stretched out their hands with bundles of desires

in that secret garden, nakedness,

they left in silence.

Oh insatiable thirst in childhood, they swung from your branches,

ate your fruits, carved their names, cut your branches,

then go away…

Each day you waited, leaves fell on empty shade.

Bend your boughs, O tree and all your rigid branches, bend!

Remember their return?

Wickedly they stretched out their hands and nailed Him firmly to you

on grounds of blasphemy.

Sometimes a man is both Cain and Abel, thriving on and filling his own emptiness

through others' secrets.

O great tree, see how I have grown?

Your eternal sway, Always you bend, Always you will,

Always you wrestled in me.

The Salesian Pontifical University's Jerusalem Campus of the Faculty of Theology (Studium Theologicum Salesianum - STS) carries on the academic tradition of the former Salesian Centre for Theological Studies established in Bethlehem (1929), then transferred to Tantur (1949), to Cremisan (1957) and to Jerusalem in September 2004. It is located a short 20 minute walk from the Old City of Jerusalem, site of the major events of Christ's life. The Studium Theologicum Salesianum offers a four-year Pontifical Bachelor's Degree in Theology. All courses are taught in English. The STS follows a two semester system (September-January and February-June). In addition to students who do the regular four-year degree program, STS welcomes students who want to study a selection of courses in theology. The lay and religious students and faculty come from various religious orders and congregations and rites within the Catholic Church. You can get to know us better at www.jerusalem.unisal.it. We also have a well furnished, computerized library containing over 36,000 volumes and close to 100 periodicals in various languages - the majority being in English, Italian and French. LECTURES, ISLAM STUDIES AND BOOK & OTHER PRESENTATIONS

Continuing the past three years tradition of the STS, prepared lectures and book reviews by guests and students, augment the regular curriculum. These extracurricular seminars and lectures provide opportunity for continuing discussions in interreligious faiths and ecumenical dialogue, especially with Judaism, Islam and Eastern Christian Churches. Our unique placement in Jerusalem gives ample opportunity for inviting people with specific experience and who are members of those religions or churches to join us, or we are able to visit them and to pray with them.

A summary of each of these presentations is given in the following excerpts from articles written by students or staff. The complete article can be found on our website: www.jerusalem.unisal.it.

DR. SCOTT HAHN'S LECTURE IN JERUSALEMth

Jerusalem, 12 January 2014.

Renowned speaker and author of best-selling books [The Lamb's Supper, Signs of Life], Dr. Scott Hahn enthralled a packed audience in the John Paul II Conference Center at Notre Dame of Jerusalem. Dr. Hahn spoke on “Consuming the Word: The New Testament and the Eucharist in the Early Church”. The Studium Theologicum Salesianum facilitated the organization of the lecture. Dr. Hahn and his wife Kimberly were in the Holy Land on a pilgrimage organized by 206 Tours led by Milanka Lachman and supported by Guiding Star Ltd., of Jerusalem led by Simon Khano. The audience from Jerusalem was joined by nearly 150 pilgrims who came to the Holy Land with Dr. Hahn. Dr. Hahn, in his lecture, stressed that the New Testament was a sacrament before it became a document. The Eucharist is the new

covenant in His blood. Early Christians followed the Lord's command to “do” it in remembrance of Him. Drawing on magisterial teaching, Dr. Hahn pointed out that the Eucharist is the summit and source of all evangelization to which all energies of the Church should be directed in its efforts at new evangelization. In the Eucharist we celebrate divine love expressed in the “Word Inspired” and the “Word Incarnate”. Dr. Hahn exhorted the assembly to witness the power of God's love celebrated in the Eucharist in daily life. For the ministers of the Word and Sacrament that attended the lecture, it was a truly inspiring evening. Bishop Shomali rightly pointed out, that Dr. Hahn brought the circle of evangelization to completion when he came to preach and teach the Good News in Jerusalem, the place from where the Good News was first preached to Europe and the Americas.

CHRISTIAN APPROACH TO READING THE KORAN (QURAN)

Jerusalem, 5th February 2014

Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald, a foremost expert in the field of dialogue between Christianity and Islam delivered a lecture at the STS on “Christian Approach to Reading the Koran”. It was the second of a series of lectures, focusing on a better understanding of the Islamic faith, being organized by the STS this year.

The Archbishop began with a prayer in Arabic using the first surat of the Koran - the Surat al-Fatihah: “In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. All praise is due to God, the Lord of the Worlds. The Merciful, the Compassionate. Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone do we worship and You alone we seek for help. Guide us to the Straight Path. The path of those upon whom You have bestowed Your blessings, those whose (portion) is not wrath, nor of those who have gone astray.”

The Archbishop concluded his speech by quoting the teaching from John Paul II: “It must first be kept in mind that every quest of the human spirit for truth and goodness…is inspired by the Holy Spirit. The various religions arose precisely from this primordial human openness to God... Handed on to others, this experience took form in the doctrines, rites and precepts of the various religions.”

DIMENSIONS OF SHIA ISLAMWritten by Arcadius Puwein, SDB

Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald, M.Afr., presented the third of a series of 3 talks, this one focusing on “Dimensions of Shia Islam”. A main difference between the Sunnis and the Shiites is the division over the question of leadership and authority within the umma (global social network) since the death of Muhammad. In his conclusion, Archbishop Fitzgerald presented some similarities that exist between Catholics and Shiites. As Catholics believe in Scripture supported by tradition, Shiites believe in the Quran supported by t r a d i t i o n . S h i i t e s understand suffering in a similar way to the way Catholics understand suffering in the light of the passion of Christ. The Shiites have a hierarchy chosen by the community to interpret the Quran and t h e i r t r a d i t i o n s a s C a t h o l i c s h a v e a hierarchy to interpret Scripture and tradition.

GENESIS OF HUMAN STEWARDSHIP OF THE EARTH

Written by Gabriel Colney

The staff and students attended a talk by Rabbi Yonatan Asher Neril, the founder and Executive Director of the Inter faith Center for Sustainable Development, presenting Genesis of Human Stewardship of the Earth. In his talk Rabbi Yonatan emphasized 2 quotes from the Book of Genesis; Genesis 1: 26, and Genesis 2:15. The Rabbi then disclosed how commentators have expressed their idea of “rulership” m e a n i n g n o t t o d e s t r o y b u t t o preserve and man's need to merit in order to have dominion over the earth. He showed through past commentators how the words “take care o f ” h a v e b e e n strongly emphasized. Humans are responsible for stewardship of the earth but presently Mother Nature needs care and protection as we human beings have used and misused her resources. In closing remarks, the principal, Fr. Biju expressed our hope of further collaboration with Rabbi Yonathan in the future.

THE BIOGRAPHY OF EDITH STEINWritten by Dieunel Victor, SDB

The first book presentation of the second semester by Br. Minh Dang was “Edith Stein: Jew, Atheist, Philosopher, and Saint”. The book used was: Edith Stein: A Biography by Waltraud Herbstrith. Edith, later in her life, was also known as Sr. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Edith gave up her Jewish faith in childhood. She studied at the University in psychology and then philosophy. She read the book Logical

Investigation, by Edmund Husserl, which changed her way of thinking and she was eventually led to Catholicism. She joined the Carmelite nuns, but unfortunately, did not live long. Edith and her sister Rosa were arrested at the Carmelite convent in the Netherlands by Nazi soldiers. Edith Stein died on August 9, 1942 aged 50. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1987 and was declared a saint 11 years later in 1998.

MISQUOTING JESUS Written by Girmay Hailu, SDB

The book presentation on a book written by Bart. D Ehrman titled Misquoting Jesus, presented by Br. Arcadius Puwein, SDB began with when and why misquoting might happen. Some background on the author, Bart D. Ehrman, the author was given. After signing consent that the Bible is an inerrant Word of God and every word of the Bible is inspired, Ehrman became interested in MSS (original manuscripts) and textual criticism. He discovered we do not have the original inspired copy of the New Testament books. Pointing out that different MSS were followed by different sects of people, the copyist making mistakes in punctuation, space, lower and upper case, eventually Ehrman's conclusion was that the Bible appears to be a very human book written by authors at different times and places to address different needs, from their own perspective, own beliefs, own desires, own understanding, own views, and for him, minor disagreements from here and there are far outweighed by the vast majority of parts that are in agreement.

ZACHARIAH AND INTERFAITH DIALOGUE: A REDACTION CRITICISM OF THE GOSPEL'S AND QURAN'S ACCOUNTS OF THE ANNUNCIATION TO ZACHARIAHWritten by Jakub Ruszniak, SDB

Sandy focused on the application of the redaction criticism method, beginning with the characters and then on the differences in the setting and the plot. Attention was also drawn to the intention of the texts: both accounts are miracle narratives and their main literary function is to set the road for a more exotic story. Finally the theological function of the presented texts was explored: God's omnipotence, the necessity of prayer, God's mercy and compassion and God as the Creator.

THE STORY OF A SOUL, BIOGRAPHY OF ST. THERESE OF LISIEUX Written by Emmanuel Chisanga Mubanga, M.Afr.

This presentation focused on the life of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, Nun and Doctor of the Church, through her biography entitled The Story of a Soul presented by Bro. Manuel Solis Hurtado, sdb. Manuel established how Saint Thérèse's vocation was rooted in her family where she experienced a lot of love. She is known as the co-patron of missions with St. Francis Xavier. She died of tuberculosis on 30th September, 1897 at the age of 24 with a heart filled with joy and serenity. Thérèse's center of spirituality was God's mercy. She was convinced that it is through the day to day 'little deeds' that one can become holy and she did just that!

THE PRIEST IS NOT HIS OWN Written by Hurtado Solis, SDB

Br. Dieunel Jean Paul Victor, SDB, reviewed the book The Priest in not his Own by Fulton Sheen. Bishop Fulton Sheen (1895-1979), is considered a Priest, teacher, pastor, Bishop, philosopher, author and master of communication. His book, The Priest is not His Own, stresses the figure of the Priest as not only a victim as Christ was a victim but also as both Shepherd and Lamb. As the one who offers, he is Shepherd. As the one offered, he is Lamb. The Priest is a mediator between God and his people. Bishop Fulton Sheen emphasized that Priests are essential in this society that needs the presence of the Lord. Otherwise, who will keep the sacraments alive for the next generation?

CHUR UNIVERSITY, CHUR SWITZERLANDWritten by Vincent Kyererezi, M.Afr.

The students and faculty attended a memorable presentation by the students of Chur University. Fredy, Olivia and Br. Denny, the trio from the Theology Faculty “Theologische Hoschschule” of Chur in Switzerland, joined the STS student body in September. Four major points were discussed; some facts about Switzerland, the role of the Catholic Church in Switzerland, the influence of the Catholic Swiss Theologians such as Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Hans Küng, and Protestants such as Calvin, Zwingli, Karl Barth and Frère Roger, founder of Taizé, and the two structures of the Catholic Church, the Canonical Church in direct communion with the Holy See and the State Church which adheres to directives from the State. The role of the Lay Theologians is vital as pastoral assistants, preparing the faithful for sacraments, spiritual care, giving adult instruction and religious education, doing some administrative work and involvement in liturgical responsibilities. The presentation ended with an inspiring prayer from Brother Klaus, revered as a national saint, paraphrased thus: “My Lord and my God, take away all that distances me from you, give me all that brings me closer to you and detach me from my self to give my all to you”.

ALPHONSE MARIE RATISBONNE: A Monumental Legacy

Cultural Initiative 3 May, 2014

The celebration of the Bi-Centenary of his birth and the 130 years since the death of Fr. Alphonse Marie Ratisbonne, brought together the Fathers, Sisters, Brothers and lay members of the Religious of Our Lady of Sion, the students and faculty of STS, and invited guests to a special Cultural Initiative hosted in the Don Bosco Auditorium at the Studium Theologicum Salesianium.

Following words of welcome by principal, Fr. Biju Michael, SDB, and a prayer song performed by the STS choir under the leadership of Deacon Gabriel, SDB, the assembly was greeted by NDS Superiors General Fr. Donizete Ribeiro and Sr. Oonah O'Shean. Br. Elio Passetto, NDS introduced the speakers at the table and provided an historical context of Fr. Ratisbonne's presence in the Holy Land, explaining that, born in the plan of God and over 200 years ago the Family of the Religious of Our Lady of Sion are, today, the living memory of the work of Father Alphonse and of his older brother Fr. Theodore.

Ms. Emmanuelle Main ably described significant events in the lives of the Frs. Ratisbonne and the legacy they have left, beginning with roots in Paris and expanding to Israel where NDS communities were established at Ecce Homo, Ein Karem, and also at Ratisbonne. When Fr. Alphonse arrived in the Holy Land in 1855, “he came ready to put up with every suffering to be able to live in Jerusalem”. In aptly describing Father Alphonse, she stated that “he did not come to keep stones but to educate the children of God without distinction”. His purpose was to embrace all God loved, whether Muslims, Jews, or Christians. These two Ratisbonne Formators, it seems, in embracing the Catholic Faith also found their true roots in Judaism, lived out in dedication to the people they embraced absolutely and unequivocally.

Mr. Olivier Rota, described the importance of Zion in the context of the Church in the 19th and 20th centuries. He expounded on 4 important points; the importance of the relationship between the Old and New Testaments as understood by Fr. Theodore, the need of Fr. Alphonse to find his place in the Church as a Jew and a convert, then, coming to the Holy Land, this land of history, gave the people here a connection beyond memory and made them real, and finally, the Holy Land became a place of meeting with an international dimension where movement of ideas could be allowed and nurtured.

The very intellectually stimulating presentations and heartwarming reflections were followed up by an equally thought-provoking question and answer period, in which the panel of experts included in addition to the dignitaries mentioned above, by Rev Sr Maureen Cusick, the NDS coordinator for the Mediterranean region. The lectures and discussions provided for all participants, a lively and captivating morning.

VISIT TO THE CITY OF DAVID

By the First Year Students

On a narrow, southeast ridge of Jerusalem is a hilltop called the City of David. From David's palace looking down into the Kidron Valley a spectacular view of the locations of many of the Holy Sites visited previously can be seen. Although there is much activity above ground, digs have uncovered a most exciting archeological find. This City of David was believed to have been the actual, real, and first Jerusalem. Excavations on the site uncovered a large building above a stepped stone retaining wall, built somewhere between 1200 and 1000 BC, during the reign of King David. This large stone structure has been identified as the royal “House of Cedar” described in the Bible as David's palace. On-going excavations confirm Biblical stories written about those ancient times.

The Pool of Siloam is located south of the City of David. It is filled by water from Hezekiah's Tunnel, dug to redirect the water from the Gihon Spring. Water continues to flow through the tunnel some 2,700 years later.

Seeing the City of David, the pool of Siloam and Hezekiah's Tunnel provides yet another connection to the marvelous history and development of Judasim and Christianity available to us who study in Jerusalem.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCURSIONS

The unique and irreplaceable feature of studying at the Studium Theologicum Salesianum with diverse monthly excursions to the different historical and holy places in the Holy Land has been continued in the second semester. In the three year cycle of visiting the historical and holy places in Israel, from the Galilee region in the north to the Negev region in the south, students journeyed to Mar Saba and Herodion and then to Tel Arad and Masada. The entire student body and many faculty members also traveled on a 4 day excursion through Turkey. These trips continue to aid the students in increasing and clarifying their knowledge of Geography, Prehistory, Archaeological finds, and Biblical events hidden in the unforgettable sites. The excursions make study of Theology in the Holy Land thought-provoking and noteworthy. In each of the archaeological excursions the place itself tells a unique story of its own that cannot be convincingly explained except through bodily presence

and being touched by the milieu of the people who lived in these Holy Land places centuries earlier. The students' experiences are reflected in the following excerpts from their articles. The complete article can be found on our website: www.jerusalem.unisal.it.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCURSION TO MAR SABA AND HERODION

Written by John Baptist Tran Ngoc Phat, SDB

An Archaeological Excursion to Mar Saba Monastery & Herodion National Park presented first the Greek Orthodox Mar Saba Monastery, built some 1,500 years ago, located in the Judean Desert attached to the walls of the Kidron Valley.

Originally monks lived in caves along with their founder, Mar (Saint) Saba who gained fame for his piety and attracted other monks. This monastery is one of the oldest still-inhabited monasteries in the world.

At the entrance to the desert of Judea, St. Theodosius founded a monastery named for him in the year 465 AD, known as the site where the three wise men rested on their way back from visiting the infant Jesus in Bethlehem.

At Herodion National Park Herod the Great chose to build his Mountain-palace (23-15 BCE). He was buried there. The remains of Herod's luxury palace include a garden at its center, Roman style luxurious baths and vast living spaces. Many stone-balls were visible that were used to attack the palace. On the other side of the path, was the monument of the tomb of Herod. Today this is a national park of historic sites.

At Katisma, the octagonal Byzantine church built to remember the place where the Holy Family rested on their way from Jerusalem to Bethlehem was observed.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCURSION TO TEL ARAD AND MASADAWritten by Fredy Kuttipurathu

This archeological visit was first to the National Park in Tel Arad, in the eastern part of the desert Negev. The National Park covers an area of 52 hectares, including ruins of a Canaanite city that was inhabited by 2000-3000 people and mentioned in the Bible in Numbers 21:1: “When the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the Negeb, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive.”

The citadel of the time of Solomon (2nd century BC), a well, 25 meters deep that likely provided water for the workers at Masada, and a palace with two altars were explored. The Israelite temple, a miniature version of Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, was a highlight of the visit to Arad.'

Near the Dead Sea, on the edge of the Judean desert, a plateau 400 m high, 600 m long and 200 m wide accommodated the ancient fortification built by Herod the Great. The plateau is surrounded by a wall with 37 towers. Within the walls there are remains of several buildings and royal palaces, one of them had a storeroom which is 70 m long and designed only for the palace. The place is called Masada. The Romans sieged the mountain in 73 or 74 AD. The history of Tel Arad and Masada and the beauty of the ancient construction have left an indelible impression on those who participated in this archeological excursion.

BACHELOR OF THEOLOGY EXAMS 2013-2014

The fourth year students had their comprehensive exams from 27th May until 2nd June 2014. All of them, 12 in number successfully obtained their Pontifical Bachelor of Theology degree from the Studium Theologicum Salesianum, Jerusalem campus of the Salesian Pontifical University. The names of those students who sat for oral defense are Emanuele De Maria sdb (Italian), Tekle Mariam Makore (Ethiopian), Colney Gabriel Lalremtluanga (Indian), Rooney John Undar (Filipino), Pedro Sachitula (Angolan), Fredrich N'getich Limo (Kenyan), Vincent Kyererezi (Ugandan), Awano Tedele (Ethiopian) and Jacek Garus (Polish). The students who sat for comprehensive exams are André Villeneuve (Canadian), Emmanuel Chisanga Mubanga (Zambian) and Dennis Bisonga (Kenyan).

Emanuele De Maria sdb wrote his synthesis entitled "Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God" (Mt 5:8). Purity as the primordial state of the human being, as ongoing proclamation of the prophets, as a way of imitation of Christ and of Christian freedom and holiness, and as state of eternal happiness.” Emanuele's clarity and confidence of presenting his synthesis and in answering the given question: "The liturgy as heavenly and earthly celebration, as memorial and presence, as ritual and sanctification, as personal and communal sending to the world" showed that he had well assimilated his theological studies. The theme presented by Emanuele deepened the OT background, the prophets' contributions, and the fulfillment in Jesus and, due to the focus given by Don Bosco to the virtue of purity, an interesting Salesian point of view. Emanuele will be ordained on 28th June 2014 at Latina, Italy.

Tekle Mariam Makore sdb took a very interesting topic entitled, “Mary mother of the incarnate God in the economy of salvation, help and mother of the Church, icon of true discipleship of Christ, star of the new evangelization and hope for Christian unity”. In his synthesis he focused on the role of the Holy Spirit in salvific history especially in Mary's life. It was mentioned that the old Eve brought death by disobedience and the new Eve (Mary) brought life by her “Yes”. The presence of Mary throughout the life of Jesus was that of a witness beginning with the incarnation until the ascension and Pentecost. He expounded on the truth that Mary is both Mother and Virgin. She is then the star of new evangelization and the hope for Christian unity. Tekle will be ordained on 19th July 2014.

Colney Gabriel Lalremtluanga sdb, wrote his synthesis on "From the Trinity to the Eucharist and from the Eucharist to the Trinity. God gives Himself to man by means of His son's body. He animates it with His Spirit, He enlivens it with the Sacraments and He invites it to an eternal communion with Him." Gabriel presented his synthesis that God communicates to humanity through His own creation and revelation. He created human beings out of Love. Humanity is blessed with the gift of freedom either to respond or refuse. Though, the human departs from God by committing sin, God never ends His cordial communication. He communicates through many ways to bring redemption for all humanity. The incarnated Son, Jesus Christ is the true and culmination of all revelation. He became human to reveal himself and used human language to communicate to men. He established the Church with the help of Peter and other apostles to continue His mission. God never intends to abandon humanity rather brings all to be in communion with Him. The Sacraments are the visible signs of invisible graces through which God's never ending communication continues with the action of the Holy Spirit. The Eucharist is one of the significant Sacraments among all others. It plays pivotal role in communion between God and men. Added to this, Dn. Gabriel defended his synthesis effectively and prudently by responding to the questions raised by the examining commission. He will be ordained in the month of December, 2014.

Rooney John Undar sdb defended his theological synthesis successfully on the topic “God revealed as Trinity: A model and source of true communion in the Church. A reality which implies the sacredness and value of family in the society”. Rooney stated that the communion of love that we experience, as human beings, created in the image of God, has its source in the love of the Trinitarian communion of persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Each of us is called to a communion of love. We could not but think about the basic communion we share in a family. The family is the basic unity of the society and the natural avenue where we experience this communion of love. Therefore, it is fitting to expound and reflect on the importance of the Holy Family, the model of all families and the epitome of a real communion of love. Rooney will be ordained on 15th August 2014 at Cebu, Philippines.

Pedro Sachitula sdb’s synthesis topic was “For freedom Christ set us free. So stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery” (Gal 5:1). Created anew in Christ, we are called to be free and to participate in his liberating mission ad gentes. In this synthesis, Pedro emphasized and expounded his synthesis exegetically and pastorally. He emphasized on Paul's understanding of freedom from the law and stated that freedom should lead us to do something, i.e., loving our neighbour. He also illustrated on the notion of the new creation in which salvation is open to all since all have sinned. In his explanation he mentioned that this freedom is both “freedom from” and “freedom for” He continued to explain about the communal aspect of freedom that makes us realize the fact that we are all together the body of Christ. He concluded that the mission of the Church is that of evangelizing and liberating people however this should always spring forth from the scriptures. He added that Don Bosco who is the founder of the Salesian society in his own way and context evangelized and liberated the young people so that they may be free from moral danger. Pedro Sachitula will be ordained a priest on 26th July 2014.

STUDY TRIP TO TURKEY

Written by Luca De Muro and Emanuele De Maria

Turkey can well be considered the “second Holy Land” even though it is now mainly a Muslim country. Two magnificent monuments gave a warm welcome on arrival in Istanbul: the “Blue Mosque” and the impressive basilica of “Hagia Sophia” (“Holy wisdom”). A visit was made to the region of Cappadocia, famous for its “fairy chimneys”, rocky conic shapes formed by the erosion of wind and water throughout the centuries and the underground cities, completely built by refugees. Cappadocia is of outstanding importance for the history of the early Church. The Mass was celebrated in one of the cave churches where, generations of Christians before had celebrated the same Eucharist.

Two cities intimately related to the birth of Christianity were explored. Tarsus was St. Paul's birth place, and Antioch, the city of one of the very first Christian communities.

At Antioch, before the Holy Mass, Fr. Domenico, a Capuchin Friar, mentioned that the disciples of Jesus were first called “Christians”(cf. Acts 11: 26) here. He also identified this as the land where Paul and Barnabas made their first steps as evangelizers. Antioch today is an example of a peaceful coexistence of the three monotheistic religions - Muslims living peacefully side by side with the Christian and Jewish minorities. Walking for four days in the footsteps of the first Christian communities, had a great impact on each pilgrim. This trip was truly an opportunity to expand the knowledge of New Testament passages and to add to personal human and theological growth.

Frederick N'getich M.Afr defended his theological synthesis successfully on the topic, The Eucharist envisaged, transmitted and celebrated as memory, banquet, Paschal Sacrifice and Mystery of the faith in the life and in the mission of the Church. Limo's presentation and writing of this synthesis is highly influenced by his vocation and mission as he said and presented in his paper. Limo emphasized that Eucharist is at the centre of all sacraments initiated by Christ; a memorial and sacrifice; the climax of catholic faith and practice. He also said that through the Eucharist the church partakes of the table of the Lord with the angels and saints as well as all the humanity baptized or non-baptized whereby the Eucharist unites and makes whole. Frederick will be ordained a priest on 6th September 2014 in Eldoret Diocese, Kenya.

His presentation links history with the events of the faith of the Church. Vincent will be ordained a priest on 19th July 2014 at Mbarara, Uganda.

Awano Tadele sdb title was “When the completion of the time came, God sent his Son born of a woman, born a subject of the law, so that we could receive adoption as sons. As you are sons, God has sent into our hearts the Spirit of his Son crying, Abba, Father”. (Gal 4: 4-6.) Tadele presented the historical figure of Jesus, born of a woman as we humans are. Then he moved on to demonstrate how he discusses it in his paper whereby first he finds the roots and foundation from the Old Testament, moves on to the fulfillment in the person of Jesus Christ to how Christians are adopted through the sacraments to be children in the Son. Christians find perfection in Jesus Christ's resurrection and ascension, which grounds our faith. Tadele will be ordained in 2015 in Ethiopia.

He cited the scriptures, magisterial teachings, liturgy, and personal manifestation of Jesus and non-Christian sources as helps to understand this reality. He also tackled a question on Trinitarian, Christological and anthropological dimensions of the event of incarnation and paschal mystery. Dennis will be ordained a priest on 5th July 2014 at Kisii Diocese, Kenya.

Mubanga Emmanuel Chisanga M. A fr presented his answers to three themes orally which were chosen by lot. Revelation as interpersonal relationship between God and Man in a covenant of love. God's communication and Man's response in trust, assent to the divine truths and commitment. The knowledge of Jesus Christ (as “Jesus of History” and “Christ of Faith”) through the witnesses of the New Testament, the teachings of the Magisterium and the liturgical celebrations. Evangelization and dialogue with Cultures and Religions: a challenge always renewed for the Church, from the Patristic era, to Pope Francis. How to “give reason” of the Christian hope (1Pt 3:15) and how to bring the “seeds of the Logos” to full maturity. Emmanuel presented all the three themes very well. God's revelation both in the Old Testament and the New Testament is out of love. The response that He expects from human beings is to respond to His love with the gift of freedom. Christ is the culmination of revelation. The knowledge of Christ could be attained through the teachings of the Scripture, the Church, and the liturgical celebrations.

Garus Jacek sdb defended his theological synthesis successfully on the topic "The Mystery of the Person in the light of the Paschal Mystery." Jacek explained his synthesis starting with the historical development of the concept of person from the earliest times. He explored the human and divine aspects of personhood. The person is by nature a relation. He explored the Paschal Mystery and the redemption of the body by the death and resurrection of Christ. The redemption of the person was explained following the ideas of St. John Paul II in his teachings on the Theology of the Body. As an expert in his paper, he responded to the questions and clarifications of the examining commission. He will be ordained on 14th of June, 2014 in Poland.

Villeneuve André in the oral examination expounded on the primacy of Christ in the order of creation of the world (Eph 1: 3-15), justified by faith (Rom 4:17-25) and saved in hope (Rom 8:24) in his paschal mystery, in the following dimensions Christology, Anthropology 'De Gratia' and ecumenism. He emphasized on the relationship between creation and redemption. He said that in the Old Testament, there seems to be creation and de-creation in the sense of the ten plagues in Egypt, the dividing of the red sea etc., in which the redemption of Israel becomes a new creation. Responding to the theme about distinctive principles of Christian Morality and spirituality as both gift of grace and personal commitment, he first quoted Mt 5: 48 “be perfect as your heavenly father is perfect”. He continued to say that in Leviticus there is already the call to holiness. He concluded by saying that the Father makes the plan, the Son effects the plan and the Holy Spirit enables us to understand and respond to this plan. Responding to the discussion on Liturgy as mystery, celebration and life, he quoted Sacrosanctum Concillium nos. 7 & 8 in which Liturgy is seen as the summit of the church's activity and that the liturgy is both earthly and heavenly (the already but not yet). He emphasized on the fact that Christ is present in every liturgical celebration.
