Estudios de grado (new undergraduate courses). It isexpected that in academic year 2010/2011 all the studyprogrammes will be adapted to the European Higher

Education Area. They will generally last 4 years and willhave a total o 240 credits. They are designed to increasethe students’ autonomy and maturity. To this end, theoretical lectures are complemented with an emphasison other learning methods. Essentially they combinegeneral education with training oriented towards carryingout a proessional activity. Upon completing the course, students receive an undergraduate degree which enablesthem to take master’s courses. Degrees with 300 ECTScredits give access to doctoral studies.

Postgraduate studies: These include ocial, UJIspecifcand doctorate studies.

OFFICIAL LANGUAGES

The Universitat Jaume I is located in Castelló, one o the provinces that make up the Valencian Community,a region with two ocial languages – Valencian

(academically known as Catalan) and Spanish.

The Universitat Jaume I uses Catalan as its ‘mothertongue’, and this is the language used on aninstitutional and administrative level. Both Catalanand Spanish are used in teaching and academics andstudents are ree to choose which language they wantto express themselves in. The extent to which eachlanguage is used varies rom course to course, butoverall around 21% o classes in the undergraduatestudies, 13% o the Master classes and 9% o theclasses in the PhD programmes are in Catalan. TheUJI oers Spanish and Catalan language classes ororeign students through the SelAccess Language

Centre (CAL). Because many o our students are romoverseas and members o the teaching sta andproessionals oten come rom outside the ValencianCommunity and Spain, lectures in the master’s coursesare usually given in Spanish. Nevertheless, bothlanguages coexist quite happily and are studied andspoken by the majority o inhabitants o the town o Castelló.
