ABOUTPACIFICINTERNATIONALACADEMYPacific International Academy (PIA) has been serving international students since 1997 and is accredited by theAccreditingCouncilforContinuingEducationandTraining(ACCET).PIAislocatedonthecampofMarylhurstUniversity.MissionStatementTheoverarching intentofPacific InternationalAcademy is tohelp students achieve theirpersonal goals in Englishbyfacilitatingtheacquisitionoflanguageproficiencyrequiredindailycommunication,higherlearning,andtheprofessionalworld.A core value for thePIA community isprovidinga student-centeredenvironment that facilitates interpersonalconnectionsandculturalexploration.ProgramDescriptionPIAprovidesinstructionofEnglishasaSecondLanguagetonon-nativespeakersofEnglishwhobringtotheprogramabroad array of interests and backgrounds. Throughout their experience at PIA, students are encouraged to seekintellectualandacademicgrowthatschoolandinthesurroundingcommunity.Thecurriculaarestructuredtopromotebasiccommunicationskillsinstudentsatlowerabilitylevelsandmorecomplexprofessional and academic skills in students at higher levels. Key grammatical forms are emphasized and integratedacross all levels of performance-based courses. In the areas of grammar, reading,writing, vocabulary, speaking, andlistening,studentslearntoapplyspecificlinguisticrulesthatarepresentedusingvariousrelevantmethods.PIAencouragesstudentstoexploreEnglishasactivelearnersinavarietyofcontexts.PIA’sprogramsfocusprimarilyongeneralandacademicEnglish,butsignificantenergyisdevotedtocoachingstudentsinexploringtheculturalnormsandexpectations of their new environment. Themes of this nature are intentionally folded into class sessions. Furtheropportunities for cultural adaptation and language acquisition are available through the ESL tutoring center,conversationpartners, theweekly conversation forum, service learning, volunteering,guidedsocialactivities,and thehomestayprogram.

PROGRAMLISTIntensiveEnglishasaSecondLanguagePIAhasfivecorelevelsofIntensiveEnglishLanguageclasses,plusEnglishBasics.Ineachlevel,studentsattendclassesinreading,writing,grammarandspeaking/listening.EnglishBasicsclassesaredesignedtobemixed-skills.ClassesareheldMonday through Thursday with a total of 20 hours of class per week.Within these classes, students improve theirEnglish and have a chance to study cultural topics, computer skills, and other points of special interest. Students inLevels3,4,and5areeligiblefor1.5MarylhurstUniversitycreditsperclass.UndergraduateFoundationsTheLanguageFoundationsprogramisanon-degreeprogramintendedtosupportnon-nativeEnglishspeakersworkingtowardtheadvancedEnglishlanguageproficiencyrequiredtobesuccessfulinundergraduatecourseworkatMarylhurst.Thiscompleteprogramisfourquarters in length.Eachquarter,studentstakeonelanguagesupportcourseofferedbyPacific InternationalAcademy(PIA)andthreeselectMarylhurstundergraduatecourses.Thelanguagesupportcoursesprovideuniversitysuccessstrategiesandpersonallanguagedevelopmentintendedtopreparestudentsforthelinguisticand academic rigor of undergraduate coursework. Eachquarter, the support course focuses on a different language-learningarea:readinginfall,speakingandlisteninginwinter,writinginspring,andgrammarandvocabularyinsummer.SupplementalAcademicOfferingsShort-termEnglishVolunteerCourseThe Short-term Volunteer Course provides students with opportunities to use English in authentic settings, exploresocio-cultural issues,and serve local communities inneed.Studentsvolunteerasagroupatdifferentnon-profit siteswithotherAmericanvolunteers.Eachdaybeginswithabriefintroductiontothevolunteersitewithateacher-ledgroup

discussion. Students practicemethods of conducting conversations in English. Relevant vocabulary and structures, aswellascultural issuesandexpectations,arepresentedat this time.Followingthesitevisit, studentsdiscussthesite’sservicesandreflectontheday’sactivitiesandbroadersocio-culturalthemes.Long-termEnglishServiceLearningThe Long-term English Service Learning course prepares students to volunteer in a U.S. non-profit organization forseveralweeks.Duringthecourse,studentsdiscoverprofessional,social,andlinguisticskillsrequiredinU.S.workplacesettingsanddeveloptoolstosupporttheirvolunteerexperiences.Additionally,studentsexploretheirattitudestowardwork, social issues, and volunteering through a series of personal reflections and groupwork. The Long-termEnglishServiceLearningtypicallyrunsinthreestagesforabout18weeks.StudentsmustbeLevel3orhighertobeeligibleforServiceLearning.Short-termEnglishCommunityServiceThe Short-termEnglishCommunity Service courseprepares students to volunteer at aU.S. non-profit organization for ashortamountoftime.Duringthecourse,studentsdevelopprofessional,cultural,andlinguisticskillsthattheyapplyduringtheirexperienceasavolunteer.Therearethreestagesofstudyforthecourse,titledStageOne:PreparationandPlacement,StageTwo:IntroductiontoAmericanWorkplaceCulture,andStageThree:CommunityService.TOEICPreparationCourseTheprimarypurposeofthisprogramistointroducetheTOEICtestandfamiliarizestudentswithtest-takingstrategiesfortheTOEIC.Becausethiscourseisanon-credit-bearingelective,nogradesareassigned.StudentsmustbeLevel3orhighertobeeligibleforTOEICPreparation.Short-termModularCoursesPIA’s short-term courses can support students who have recently arrived in the U.S. by practicing vocabulary andlanguagestructuresusedincommon,everydaycontexts. Additionally,theycanpreparestudentstoaddressnewandunfamiliarsituationsbyteachingthemto identifyandmakeuseofavailableresources. TheyarealsoabletoaddressdiscreteskillsandstrategieswhichcanhelpstudentsengagewithspeakersofEnglish.Studentscanbuildconfidenceintheirspeakingandlisteningskillsastheyapplytheseconceptsinavarietyofauthenticactivities.Thecoursescanalsoprovideanopportunity forstudentsto learnaboutthe lifestylesand interestsofAmericansthrough interactionswithteachers, homestay families, and local community members. Students are able to explore cultural themes whilereinforcinglistening,speaking,andvocabularyskills.TutoringFor a fee of $45 per hour, students at any level may receive tutoring in any subject relating to offered programs.Tutoringpositionsareofferedto facultybeforehiringanoutsidetutor isconsidered.Freetutoring isalsoavailabletostudentsbyappointmentintheESLTutoringCenteratMarylhurstUniversity.StudentscansignupforappointmentsinthePIAoffice.ConversationPartnersandConversationForumStudentshaveachancetomeetwithnativespeakersforinformalconversation,whichallowsthemtoshareinformationabout theirculture,practice theirEnglish,andmake friendswithAmericans.Teachersareencouragedtorecommendthese free opportunities to students. Conversation partners are limited and connections are contingent uponavailability,buttheweeklyconversationforumisopentoall.

PLACEMENTPlacementandOrientationAtthebeginningofeachtermthereisaplacementtestandorientationforallnewstudents.StudentsareplacedintheappropriatelevelonthebasisoftheMichiganEnglishPlacementTest(EPT),theTestofWrittenEnglish(TWE),andanoral interview.Duringthefirstweek inclass,placementmaybeadjustedonthebasisofastudent’sabilitytomeetamajorityoftheperformanceobjectivesfortheclass,asdeterminedbyalevelconfirmationexam.IfyouleavePIAformorethanoneterm,youmustbere-testedpriortoregistration.PlacementforNewStudentsStartingLateNewstudentsareallowedtostartduringWeek1(orWeek6,withpriorapproval).IfyoustartduringWeek6,youwillbeplacedonelevelbelowtheplacementasindicatedbytheEPT.Forexample,ifyoustartWeek6andtestintoLevel3,youbeginyourstudiesinLevel2.Thecourseworkyoumissedbeforeyourarrivalisnotcountedinyourfinalgrade.AdvancementTherearetwowaysforyoutoadvancetoahigherlevel:1. receiveagradeofC+(77%)orbetterinLevelsB-2orB-(80%)inLevels3-52. takealevelconfirmationexamduringthefirstweekofthetermLevelConfirmationTestingTeachersassessskilllevelsineachclassduringthefirstweekoftheterm.Teachersmayencouragestudentswhodisplayadvancedskillsinclasstotakealevelconfirmationtest.Studentswhopassthistest,whichcoversobjectivesintheclass,maybeconsideredforadvancementtothenextlevel.Norecommendationsforlevelchangesareconsideredafterthefirstweekofclass.A level confirmation test for a particular skill area may be taken only once while a student attends PIA, unless anexceptionisrecommendedbyaninstructor.Studentsonprobationmaynottakealevelconfirmationexamforaclassthattheyhavefailedtwice.Levelconfirmationtestingisonlyavailableforstudentswhoattendtheentireterm.MovingDownTeachersmay recommend that studentswhodisplay inadequate skills in classmovedown toa lower level. Studentsmayalsorequesttomovedown.AllrequeststomovedownmustbeapprovedbytheAcademicDirector.Inconsultationwithteachers,theAcademicDirectorconsidersacademicrecordsandotherfactorsinmakingthedecision.Movesdownareonlyapprovedinraresituations.ExitTestingYouarerequiredtotakeanexitexamuponleavingtheprogram.IfyouleaveEnglishBasicsorLevels1through4,youtakeanotherformoftheEnglishPlacementTestthatyoutookuponadmission.ThescorefromthisexamhasnoeffectonanygradesachievedatPIA.If you graduate from Level 5, you are required to take theMichigan English Language Institute College English Test(MELICET)nearoratthecloseofyourfinaltermwithPIA.ThescorefromthisexamhasnoeffectongradesachievedatPIAandisuseda)asanindicatorforyouofaMichiganEnglishLanguageAssessmentBattery(MELAB)score,andb)asanonymous data for ongoing program assessment. Certificates of Completion are not issued until all exit testing hasbeencompleted.

ACADEMICPOLICIESAttendanceYouareexpectedtoattendallofyourclasses.Missingevenonedayofclasscancauseproblems,suchasmissedcoursecontent, quizzes, tests, or homework. Furthermore, as the majority of students at PIA are F-1 visa holders, U.S.immigrationlawrequiresthatyouattendclassesfull-timeandmakesatisfactoryprogressinyourstudies.Anabsenceisconsideredmissingmorethan1hourofanygivenclassperiod.Missingafulldayofclasseswouldresultinyouhavingmissedtwoclasses,whichwouldbeconsideredtwoabsences.There isnodistinctionbetweenexcusedorunexcusedabsences.Youcanhavenomorethan10absencesinanygiventermorfourabsencesinanygivenclass.Ifyouhave11ormoreabsencesacrossclasses,orfiveormoreabsencesinanyoneclass,youwillbeputonacademicprobation.Ifyouviolateattendanceruleswhileonprobation,youmaytriggertheexpulsionprocess.Ifyouareabsent,youareresponsibleforknowingwhathappenedinclassandcompletinghomeworkandassignments.Ifyouaresick,youneedtocontactaclassmateoryourteachertofindoutwhatworkyouhavemissed.Teachers’emailaddressesandphonenumbersarelistedineachsyllabus.Ifyoudonotattendthefullterm,theattendancepolicyisprorated.Forexample,ifyoustartattendingPIAduringWeek6,youcanhaveonlyfiveabsencesacrossallclassesortwoinanyoneclass.TardiesIfyouarelatetoclass,returnlatefromaclassbreak,orleaveclassearly,youareconsideredtardy.Thetotalnumberofmissedminutescontributestoadailytotalamountofmissedtimeforeachclasssession.Everythreeinstancesofbeingtardyinanyoneclassarecountedasoneabsencefortheclass.

• 1–60minuteslateforclass,latefrombreak,orleavingearlyresultsinonetardyforthatclass.• 61ormoreminuteslate,etc.resultsinoneabsenceforthatclass.• 3tardies=1absenceforthatclass

MissedClassMeetingsIf you miss class meetings, you are responsible for communicating with your teachers and making up class work.Teachersarenotrequiredtoacceptmissedclassworkfromyou,anditmaynotbepossibleforyoutomakeupsomeclasswork.FinalExamsYouareexpectedtocompleteyourclasses.Finalexamsusuallyhappenonthelastdayofclass,whichispublishedonthePIAacademiccalendar(availableonthePIAwebsite,intheoffice,andatnewstudentorientation).Finalexamsarenotgivenearly.Ifyoumissyourfinalexam,youwillreceiveazero,whichmaycauseyoutofailtheclass.PlagiarismandAcademicHonestyPlagiarism is using the ideas, data, or language of another person without specific and proper acknowledgment.Examples:Misrepresentinganother’swork(paper, labreport,article,orcomputerwork)asyourownoriginalcreationandsubmittingitforanassignment;usingsomeoneelse’sideaswithoutattribution;failingtociteareferenceortousequotationmarkswhereappropriate.Plagiarismandother formsofacademicdishonesty (“cheating”)arevery seriousoffenses inAmericanacademicsandmayresultinfailingclasses,beingplacedonprobation,orbeingexpelledfromschool.PIAfollowsMarylhurstUniversitypolicies in regards to plagiarism. Please refer to your class syllabus formore informationonpolicies about academichonesty.

GradingIneachclass,yourgrade isbasedonacombinationofattendance,participation,andclasswork,whichconsistsof in-classassignments,homework,quizzes,andtests.Basedoncompletionofclassrequirements,thefollowinggradesaregiven.IfyouareinEnglishBasics,Level1,orLevel2,youreceiveagradeofPassorNoPass.ForLevels3-5:

IfyoureceiveagradeofCorlower(below77%)inLevelsB-2,youwillneedtorepeatthecourse.IfyoureceiveagradeofC+orlower(below80%)inLevels3-5,youwillneedtorepeatthecourse.TeachersmayalsouseN/A.Thismeansthattheydidnothaveenoughinformationtogiveyouagrade.RepeatingClassesIt is common that students needmore than one term tomaster the skills in any class. In such cases, the instructorrecords a non-passing grade andnotes on the grade record thatmore time is needed to develop the language skillsnecessaryforadvancement.Ifyoureceivelessthan87%inaclass,youmayrequesttorepeatthatclassonetimeinordertoimproveyourskills.Ifyou get 87%-100%, youmay only repeatwith teacher input andAcademicDirector approval.Anyone can request torepeatLevel5classesonce.ArequesttorepeatacoursemaybedeniediftheAcademicDirectordeterminesthatthismaycausedisruptiontoaclass.AcademicWarningsInstructors issueanacademicwarning ifyoudonotperformatapassing levelacademically,repeatedlyviolateschoolpolicies, orotherwisebehave in away thatdisrupts theacademicenvironment. Theacademicwarningdescribes theproblemandprovidesstepstocorrecttheproblem.Academicwarningsshouldbegivenearlyenoughtoallowyoutimetocorrecttheproblem.Onecopyofthewarningisgiventoyou;anotherissignedbybothyouandtheinstructorandplacedinyouracademicfile.If you receive three ormore academicwarnings in one term, youmay be at risk of probation or asked to leave theschool (expulsion).TheAcademicDirectorwill reviewyour caseanddetermineyouracademic statusandany furtheractions.Inseriouscases,youcanbeplacedonprobationimmediately,andprobationwillbeineffectforthecurrentandfollowingterms.Ifyoudonotfixtheproblembytheendoftheterm,youmaybeexpelled.

ProbationPerimmigrationregulationsandschoolexpectations,youmustmakesatisfactoryprogressinyourcoursework.Itisalsoexpectedthat,duetolinguisticorotherfactors,youmayneedmorethan10weekstomeettheobjectivesoftheclass.Youareexpected to learn theskillsneededtoadvance innomore than twoterms. Ifyou fail thesameoneormoreclassesfortwoconsecutiveterms,youwillbeputonprobation,andtheAcademicDirectorwill issueyouaprobationform.Atthispoint,youwillhaveonemoretermtopasstheclassesinquestion.Ifyouarenotabletopasstheseclasses,youmaybeaskedtoleavetheschool(expulsion).Probationlastsfortwoterms.Additionally,ifyouhavefiveormoreabsencesinanygivenclassorelevenormoreabsencesacrossallclasses,youwillbeplacedonprobation.Ifyouarenotabletoimproveyourattendanceduringthefollowingterm,youmaybeaskedtoleavetheschool.Finally,youmaybeplacedonprobationifyoureceivethreeormoreacademicwarnings;anexampleofwhyyoumightgetanacademicwarningisifyoucheatonatestorrefusetouseacleantextbookinclass.Ifyoucontinuenottofollowtheschoolrules,youmaybeaskedtoleavetheschool.Probationcanbeginatanytime,includingduringtheterm.Forexample,ifyouhave14absencesinthefirsthalfofaterm,youmaybeplacedonprobationatmidterms.Ifyouhavemoreabsences,youmaybeexpelledattheendoftheterm.
