elcome to the third edition ofStudent Racing, hopefully you'veenjoyed reading the first twoissues and will enjoy this one

just as much!

Last month we decided to broaden out into othersports and we've continued the trend on. Thesports betting tips proved a hit with 2/1 Francedismissing England at Wembley.

The student trips have been going from strengthto strength with the highlight being the PaddyPower weekend at Cheltenham at the start of themonth. It's certainly taking off and a few moreoffers from courses could see the studentgeneration as a permanent image on theracecourse.

David Haye destroyed Audley Harrison in theboxing, Liverpool have started to make someprogress and Chelsea have lost the plot in thefootball. We saw the superstars of racing -Master Minded, Kauto Star and ImperialCommander strut their stuff over the jumps andthings are certainly shaping up to be anincredible national hunt season.

With the jumps season well underway, we’vebrought you 3 quick previews from some of theleading trainers in the jumping game. They'vepointed out their stable stars, the horses to followand their sure-fire winners. There's certainlysome money to be made in following them!

Well I was in Sainsbury’s at the timelooking for rubber gloves! My caddyrang me up and told me MartinKaymer hadn’t played the first 9 verywell and it looked like I was going tobe World Number 1. It took a whileto sink in but you suddenly realise I’m the best in the world at what I do.It’s amazing.

I just kept having to remind myselfthat I’d been good once and that itcouldn’t happen just like that. I wentback to basics, when you losesomething like that you’ll try anythingbut not to go back to where it wentwrong in the first place which is whereI really needed to go. If physically itstarts going, then it mentally startsgoing as well. It’s a catch 22, you needgood golf to have confidence and youneed confidence to play good golf.

TROUBLES AT THE BRIDGE

How things can change in a month. It didseem a little early to call them title winners but suchwas the dominance they had over the league itappeared as though Chelsea had pretty much sewn uptheir fourth League title. But like all good things, theyhave to come to an end and Liverpool were the firstteam to profit from an out of sorts side promptlyfollowed by their first back to back losses in more thanfour years with defeats to Sunderland andBirmingham. Carlo’s men will certainly have theirwork cut out to regain their crown, especially withlong term injuries to captain John Terry and talismanFrank Lampard.

4 COUNTING DOWN TO KEMPTON

Racing fans around the world will be lickingtheir lips at the prospect of what looks set to be anotherepic Gold Cup in March after Imperial Commander, thereigning champ, made a very impressive comeback in theBetfair Chase at Haydock. Having already seen KautoStar ooze class over his field in Ireland, many are alreadycounting down the days but we may not have to wait aslong as March. Boxing Day gives us the King George VIChase at Kempton Park and the two giants of thejumping world are set to renew their rivalry. For the last few years the race has been taken by Kauto Star who this year is bidding for an unprecedented fifthtriumph in a row.

A TRUE SUPERSTAR

Zenyatta is known to many inAmerica as equine perfection. She

will live long in the hearts and minds ofracing fans around the world as a modern daywonder horse who came the closest to being aHollywood superstar since Seabiscuit. Shewent into her final race with an unblemishedrecord of 19 wins from 19 starts in theBreeders’ Cup Classic, the ‘Royal Ascot’ ofthe American calendar. With her jockey tryingto utilise her astonishing turn of foot,employing her customary last to first tactics,she was settled in stone last to make her longrun home only to be denied by the shortest ofmargins, going down by a head. No one candeny her a place in racing’s hall of fame, theonly blemish being the fact she couldn't bowout in the style everyone had expected.

RETURN TO CHELTENHAM

The Paddy Power meeting saw the return of jump racingto its own HQ, Cheltenham. With what can only be

described as a mouth-watering 3 days of racing lined up forpunters, it certainly didn't disappoint. It had it all – gruellingtussles up the home straight, heavy falls and scintillatingperformances. None more so than the very impressive SamWinner, who could be one for students to look out for in thefuture as he showed enormous amounts of class to win by amammoth 15 lengths. The feature race of the meeting was ThePaddy Power Gold Cup, in which Long Run was sent off one ofthe hottest favourites in the race for many years. However, LongRun was beaten into third by Little Josh ridden by 18 year oldSam Twiston-Davies.

SOMETHING TOLOOK FORWARD TO..Martin Johnson’s men have taken a

lot of flak over the past few years for theirblunt, one dimensional style of rugby, but itseems they are finally letting loose andbreaking the shackles after some heartwarming displays against the Southernhemisphere sides. Aside from a very ropeyfirst 20 minutes against the Kiwis, Englandseem to have found a bit of flair and guilethat has been missing since 2003. With BenYoungs, Ashton and Foden forming part ofwhat is now a fearsome back three, Englandnow seem to have players with that little bitof magic. It may be a little soon to startthinking about it, but with the World Cupjust around the corner they certainly seem tobe coming into form at the right time.

IMPERIALCOMMANDER

Imperial Commander caused anupset in the Gold Cup last yearbeating Kauto Star and Denman,however Nigel’s team knew thecalibre of the horse all along! Hisfirst run of the season (last month)was simple enough, jumping wellwhen winning the Betfair Chase atHaydock. He’s heading straight toKempton for the King George VChase next and from there will headto Cheltenham in March to defendhis crown in what already looks tobe an epic Gold Cup.

KHYBER KIM

Khyber Kim looked a different horselast season, winning the GreatwoodHurdle before coming second in theChampion Hurdle at Cheltenham inMarch. Having been second best inthe Champion Hurdle, he gained awell deserved victory the followingmonth at Aintree. He’s due to haveone run this year and head straightto Cheltenham in the hope of goingone better in the Champion Hurdle.He certainly looks like one to keep aclose eye on.

LITTLE JOSH

Last season Little Josh was one ofthe yards ‘horses to follow’, howeverhis jumping let him down and hefailed to make his mark like wasexpected. His jumping has improvedimmensely since then and followinga prep race at Carlisle he went frompillar to post to win the valuablePaddy Power Chase at Cheltenhamlast month. His next target will bethe 2 mile 5 furlongs race at theInternational meeting atCheltenham, and then the RyanairChase at Cheltenham in March.This could be the year Little Joshfinally makes his mark on thejumping world.

08 HORSE IN FOCUS

Kauto star is a French bred racehorse that is in trainingwith the champion trainer Paul Nicholls. He is a chaser,which means when he races he has to jump over fences.Kauto has won 18 races from 29 starts and has beenplaced eight other times. He holds numerous records inthe sport but his greatest achievement is regaining theCheltenham Gold Cup, which has never been donebefore. On Boxing Day this year he goes to KemptonPark in an attempt to win the William Hill King GeorgeVI for the fifth consecutive year.

Kauto’s first ever race was in 2003 and at the beginningof his career his jumping was seen as a possibleweakness. Over time he has matured and on his day cantake a length out of the field with every jump. Some ofhis performances have been simply breathtaking; forinstance last year’s King George. He won the race by 30lengths under the ride of jockey Ruby Walsh. JamesCorden would have ridden him to victory on the day; hewas that impressive. Earlier this month Kauto made hisseasonal reappearance with a victory in the JNWine.com.

Next on the agenda for Kauto is the King George, hethen heads to Cheltenham to try and win the Gold Cupfor the third time. He will be going up against somegreat horses and will have to beat Imperial Commander,last year’s winner. If he goes there fit, without sufferingany setbacks, he would have a great chance of regainingthe prestigious cup.

Kauto has been a star performer in jumps racing foryears and has an unbelievable following and is morecommonly know as ‘The People’s Champ’. Watchinghim run and jump has been described by many as poetryin motion as he appears to glide around a racecourseeffortlessly. He has achieved greatness and he hasn’tstopped yet...

One to Watch

SWEET IRONY – An interesting recommendation asSweet Irony has yet to record his first victory. Last time

out he was third at Wincanton and he is sure to havecome on for the run and is one they really like for the

future. He’s sure to be winning very soon and is one tostay on the good side of.

MEDERMITOne of the most precocious talents around, having hisfirst season over the fences after a very impressivehurdling career. He won very comfortably first time outand then had a bit of a blip last time at Huntingdonwhere he refused but before that had schooled very well which means that there is an air of confidence inthe King camp that he should bounce back next timeout. He definitely looks like one to be following thisseason and his long term target is the Arkle at theCheltenham Festival but he has a fair way to go yet to silence his critics.

KATCHIT Being not much taller than your average pony, this littlefella displays grit and determination in abundance whentaking on the big boys. Undoubtedly the highlight of his illustrious career to date came when he won theChampion Hurdle in 2008 and although he hasn’t quite managed to regain that form, his trainer, Alan King, thinks he is starting to just get that little bit of spark back.

RUSTARIXCertainly one to watch very carefully this year, winningwell at Cheltenham last time and although he’s gone upa bit in the handicap, King is convinced that hisimprovement hasn’t stopped. He has the potential to be a lot better than his current mark and is definitelyone to keep a close eye on with the yard more thanhopeful he can pick up another nice pot somewheredown the line.

mccoyhe name A P McCoy is fairly unknown one amongst those not in theracing world, although that could all be about to change. Mentionthis year’s Grand National and the winner Don’t Push It and somealarm bells might start ringing. With BBC Sports Personality Of The

Year Award just around the corner, it’s an award not normally associated withthe sport of horseracing. The great Lester Piggott and Frankie Dettori havefailed to win the award but that’s not to say McCoy can’t do it. His CV boastsover 3,000 winners, he’s has been champion jockey for the last 15 years andthis year at the 15th attempt finally managed to secure the world famousGrand National to add to his list. His first win came in 1992 and he hasn’tstopped since, being champion every year since the 95/96 season. So far he’sridden over 13,000 races and clocking up a total of well over 31,000 milesand he’s not finished yet…

Wanting to be a jockey isn’t a career choice

you pick out of the blue, why did you decide to

be a jockey?

At a very young age, for whatever reason, I alwaysloved horses and there was always something in me thatwanted to be a jockey.

Was it always the jumps path you

wanted to follow?

I was at Jim Bolger’s which gave me a big insight to theflat, and at that point I wanted to be a flat jockey. ThenI broke my leg pretty bad and was struggling to get theweight down so it was the obvious choice to go for thejumps. As much as I wanted to be a flat jockey, I lovethe thrill of riding over the jumps.

Is winning the Grand National the highlight of

your career?

It’s probably the best day I’ve had in racing, just theexcitement and the adrenaline, The Grand National,being what it is with the greatest horses in the world. Itwas just an amazing feat and the fact I had 14 previousattempts and hadn’t won it meant, when I finally wonit, it made me appreciate it that little bit more.

You’ve so far had an outside perspective of the

running for next year’s Gold Cup, who has

impressed you more so far?

I certainly think it’s going to be the horses that fought itout last year. Imperial Commander was very impressiveand if he reproduces what he did last year then he is thehorse they’ve all got to beat. You can’t pick holes inhim, but very few horses retain the Gold Cup. Denmanshould be right there, pound for pound.

You’ve ridden over 3,000 winners, is there any

season which has been a stand-out for you?

2002. During the year I think I rode 301 winners,which was amazing. That was the year I broke SirGordon Richards record, and that is my greatestachievement in racing.

If you were to win The BBC Sports Personality

Of The Year Award, what would it mean to you

and racing?

It would mean everything, the people I look up to likeFrankie Dettori and Lester Piggott haven’t won it and Iwould be shocked if I did. It would be amazing ifracing could win an award like that.

Can you see yourself moving into the training

ranks after you hang up your boots?

Never say never. I’m not sure I’d have the patience todeal with the owners! I like to do things my way so itwouldn’t always work out. If I was, I’d much rather bea flat trainer than a jumps trainer.

Frankel is 11/8 for the Guineas,

are you backing him or laying him?

I think come Guineas day, if he shows up he’ll be 11/8so I certainly wouldn’t be taking him 5 months inadvance. So much can happen. On his performances sofar, he stands out a long way ahead of the otherGuineas horses.

The biggest joker in the weighing room?

Mattie Batchelor, very comical person! He’s definitely the joker.

Football Team?

Arsenal unfortunately.

Who’s going to win the Premiership?

So so open, it’s not a race I’d like to be betting on! I’drather be backing Binocular than backing a footballteam. I’d like to say Arsenal, but really not sure.

Favourite drink?

Tea, milk and 2 sugars!

How do you keep yourself busy

when you’re not riding?

I play a lot of golf in the summer.

What’s your handicap?

...Lots of Orange birds?

Yeah lots of orange birds actually! Iremember going down the bookies with mygranddad when I was 8 or 9 and my interestgrew from there really. I always used tothink if I was ever fortunate to be in aposition where I could I’d own a racehorseand my passion has grown ever since then.

How many horses have you got

running in your colours?

I’ve just bought 11 at the sales, so it’s goingto be 15/16 this year. So it looks set to bevery exciting.

The best horse of your bunch?

We’ve got Crying Lightning, who was 2ndto White Moonstone and she goes to Dubaithis winter for the UAE Oaks. I also haveBlue Rocket who finished 3rd in the NellGwyn and she’s pretty useful.

Yourself and Michael Owen are both

involved heavily in the game, does it

get competitive between you?

It can be quite competitive, as you tend torun into each other quite a bit, it’s a bitmore competitive than on the field. He’deasily beat me in a race, he’s renowned forhis pace. Over a couple of miles though likethe Derby or St Leger trip I might have ashout!

Biggest Joker?

There’s a few actually at our place..

You rate yourself?

Yeah, I’m up there for giving a bit of stickout. Stevie Taylor, everyone really. Everyonetakes the piss out of each other, taking thepiss out of each other’s clothes and styles.

Vainest at the club?

Enrique, by a million miles.

Who controls the iPod?

Me actually, I have to put a few R&B tunesfor a few of the lads or they get a bit upset.Normally it’s my iPod, I just put shuffle onreally. It’s got a bit of class to it.

Spice Girls?

No, unfortunately not. Girl Power and allthat doesn’t go down too well.

Worst Dancer?

Jonas, because he actually thinks he’s a gooddancer when in fact he’s the worst dancerand singer we’ve got! He actually thinks he’sgood enough to go on X Factor

The Derby or Premier League?

I’ve probably got more chance of winningthe Derby!

Can you see Fabio giving you a call

any time soon?

A call-up? He might give me a call but acall-up, I don’t know. Hand on heart if Ilook at the squad, yeah I’m better thanplayers that play in there. It comes down to, do England need me? Probably not.. Do I need England? Probably not..

Fifa or Pro Evo?

Fifa, I don’t really like football gamesthough. I’m nowhere near good enough,they always make me sh*t. They’re nevercomplimentary about my hair! I’m more ofa COD man myself.

Who’s the best?

It’s what you perceive as the best really. I’mactually good! I actually run round, there’speople like Danny Guthrie who put aclaymore in, sit in the corner for 10 minutesfor 4 kills. It’s like, what’s the point!?

The vibescoming out of the camp suggest hecan build on what he’s done so farand go very close to regaining histitle as Champion Hurdler at theCheltenham Festival come March.

One of the rapidly improving horsesof last year, Punchestowns is primedto continue his progress this year. Avery classy hurdler, he’s proved justas impressive over the largerobstacles winning 2 of his 3 starts,his only defeat being a shock one atthe Cheltenham Festival in March.Entered up in all the big races thisyear, he certainly looks like one forstudents to be keeping an eye on.

ZAYNAR

One of the stars of the early season,Zaynar looked like he was about toset the world on fire with hisjumping winning his first 5 starts.Punters were very keen to be on sidewith him and he’s been madefavourite on 8 of his 9 starts. He’sstruggled to keep his place in thehigh class fields this year and afterhis latest disappointment the yardare struggling to find an excuse. Allis well with him though and he willcontinue to be campaigned at thehighest level with the hope he maybe able to recapture some of thatsparkle he once showed.

sure fire winnerTETLAMI: Tetlami certainly looks one to keep an eyeout for this year. Expected to breeze through the novicehurdle ranks this year, he can be expected to progressto much better things. The 2011 PDC World Darts Championship gets

underway at London’s Alexandra Palace on December

16th with Phil Taylor unsurprisingly the hot favourite

to land his third consecutive title and 13th overall.

However, it’s fair to say that his most recent form

coming into this year’s event hasn’t been to the

standard we would normally expect from The Power

and his defeat to Steve Beaton in the Grand Slam of

Darts was systematic of the way he has been throwing

of late.

At the time of writing SkyBet offer a standout 4/7

about him landing this (as short as 1/3 in a place) and

that is sure to entice plenty of punters. He will be

wounded by his recent form and that makes Taylor

even more dangerous than normal, if that’s possible.

This is the tournament that he always wants to win

and the offer from SkyBet looks too good to turn

down.

Obviously with the market dominated by one man it

allows plenty of other decent players to start at

generous prices. James Wade is next in the betting but

the manner of his defeat to Scott Waites in the final

of the Grand Slam will surely be too much to get over

in less than a month.

There is no doubt Wade is playing well, very well, but

this tournament has always proved an achilles heel for

him in the past, without the added mental pressure

from his latest collapse (he led 8-0 against Waites

before losing 16-12). So, if not Wade then who will

provide Taylor with the most to think about?

Gary Anderson is finally looking settled in the PDC

and could go well at 20/1 but Terry Jenkins (80/1) and

the previously mentioned Steve Beaton (200/1) both

impressed at Wolverhampton last month and at huge

prices could provide a touch of each-way value

against the greatest player in the sport’s history.
