CCA Grading The CCA Grading Scheme, with the acronym LEAPS, takes into consideration a number of new initiatives implemented in the last few years, like the Community Involvement Programme and the Character Development Programme. LEAPS Grading Scheme There is no distinction between Core and Optional CCA and covers all four groups: Sports, Uniformed Groups, Performing Arts, and Clubs and Societies. Under LEAPS, points are awarded under Leadership, Enrichment, Achievement, Participation and Service. Leadership Leadership points are awarded for leadership roles in up to 2 activities. Enrichment Enrichment points are awarded upon completion of the Character Development Programme (CDP) modules within the 4 secondary school years. Achievement Achievement points are sub-categorised into: (i) Representation, (ii) Achievement, and (iii) Attainment points. Representation points are awarded to pupils who represent their schools in inter-school competitions and for those who represent external organizations in inter-school, regional and international competitions. Attainment points are awarded to pupils who attain awards that are of non-competitive nature, such as National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA). Accomplishment points are awarded to pupils who win awards at inter-school, national, regional and international competitions, and awards from uniformed organizations. Participation Participation points are awarded for each year of participation with at least 75% attendance in one CCA. Rhythmic Gymnastics is a niche sport in our school. It is a sport that emphasizes on poise, rhythm, flexibility, physical fitness and contemporary dance movements. It combines elements of dance, ballet and gymnastics with the manipulation of various apparatus. These apparatus include the ball, hoop, rope, clubs and the ribbon. Gymnasts use these apparatus to perform beautiful and graceful routines. Competition Annually, we compete in the National Inter-School Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in groups or as individuals. Spanning over three days, we take part in various categories like the compulsory, optional and group routines.

We also take part actively in competitions like Singapore Open and National Championships organized by Singapore Gymnastics (National Sports Association for gymnastics). Our girls achieve excellent results in these competitions. In 2012, one of our gymnasts, Goh Zhao Rong was awarded the Singapore Olympic Foundation – Peter Lim Scholarship for the 2nd year. This prestigious scholarship is only awarded to high performance young athletes in Singapore. Join Rhythmic Gymnastics and be part of our team! Overseas Learning Journey In 20th June 2011, 11 girls from IJ Rhythmic Gymnastics team embarked on a learning journey to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Tuesdays & Thursdays (2.30 pm – 6.30 pm) Saturdays (7.30 am – 11.30 am) (Competition period) Monday, Wednesday, Friday (3-6pm)

Venue CHIJ Secondary A sport with history going all the way back to 1895, netball has been well established in our school, being a niche CCA for nearly a decade already. Unlike many sports, netball is unique in its own way; teamwork being the most important aspect of the game. Netball is a fast paced game and this requires stamina but more importantly quick and flexible thinking in order to strategise the game. Intensive training not only builds up our fitness and skills, but also trains us in our determination and perseverance, reminding us of the importance of never giving up, whether it is during training or an actual game. Though the long hours of training under the hot sun may be strenuous, the results we get on court is always priceless.

Every year, the CHIJ Netball School Team takes part in the Southzone and National Inter-school Netball Championships and have emerged champions many times. The credit definitely goes to our coach. Ms Kok Mun Wai. Under her guidance and dedication, CHIJ Netball has flourished and her expertise contributed immensely to the netball legacy in CHIJ. Though there have been some unexpected setbacks, the netball team has never been demoralised because of our coach as well as our teachers in charge's endless support and this has only pushed us to do better. This year the we emerged 2nd and 1st in the Southzone Competition for the ‘B’ and ‘C’ division respectively and 3rd and 2nd position in the National Inter-School Netball Competition for the ‘B’ and ‘C’ division respectively.

However, netball is not only about winning national competitions. Besides the annual championships, CHIJ Netball also plays friendly matches with many different schools, including Australian teams as well as local teams in order to learn from them and gain experience. In 2011, we had the privilege to attend a clinic conducted by the Australian Netball Team – the Australian Netball Diamonds. It was indeed an eye-opener and an enriching experience for all our players as we were able to interact with professional netball players. Netball in CHIJ is not just any team sport, but one where its members are closely knit and taught the importance of sportsmanship. Hopefully, under Coach Mun and with our teachers' support, CHIJ Netball will continue to bring glory to the school. The Netball Recreational Club is a Co-Curricular Activity that not only allows students to learn Netball skills and tactics, importance of teamwork and sportsmanship, the club also participates in both competitive and friendly games. Each year, at least 2 teams of players represent the school in the annual Pesta Sukan Netball Carnival in the recreational category. The club has been doing well with consecutive winnings of the top 3 places over the last 5 years and we will continue to strive for excellence in this carnival. Apart from Pesta Sukan, we also participate in other carnivals such as the Bright Vision Hospital Charity Netball Carnival and ISSAC Netball Carnival. Netball training takes place once a week and it is conducted by a full-time and experienced coach. The members undergo a 30-week plan throughout the year to learn the rudiments of the game. Before each Netball Carnival, the club trains twice a week to better prepare themselves for the games. Apart from the weekly training, the club members may also be given opportunities to attend the ACTive School Mentor Programme at Netball Singapore where they are equipped with umpiring skills.

JOIN THE NETBALL CLUB! And let us together make 2013 a fruitful and challenging year!

It was established in the 1960s and the School Team has enjoyed numerous successes in the National Inter-School Competitions over the years. Last year, the ‘C’ Division Team emerged third runner-up in the national competition despite very tough competition from other schools. We had to undergo intensive but enjoyable and enriching training sessions to hone our skills and improve ourselves mentally and physically.

We have the utmost support from our teachers-in-charge and coach, and all members of IJ Tennis have a strong sense of unity and team spirit. With that, we are able to overcome all obstacles that come our way. Our success is also attributed to our very devoted coach, Mr Andrew Mah who puts an immense amount of hard work and effort to enable us to be at our best in preparing for the National Inter-School Tennis Championships. The Club/Recreational Team is conducted at various levels (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced-Intermediate and Advanced). The Club serves as a feeder to the School Team and provides opportunities for students to learn the game so that they can play the game recreationally. 2011 has been an exciting year for Red Cross Youth. This year, RCY saw the official launch of the Youth Ambassador (Blood) Programme in April. In this programme, cadets learnt about blood group typing, experienced how a blood donation drive was organized, understood the role played by Singapore Red Cross in recruiting blood donors as well as enjoyed a guided tour in the Blood bank @ Health Science Authority. Through this, cadets learnt to appreciate the ‘Gift of Life’ as the blood donated by any one person can be used to save the lives of three other persons. CHIJ Red Cross was the host for the ‘Introducing Exploring Humanitarian Law’ workshop cum camp conducted on 28 – 30 May with a participation rate of nearly one hundred cadets from RCY schools all over Singapore. The intensive 3D2N camp saw cadets gaining an understanding on various humanitarian law issues such as use of child soldiers, limits in armed conflict, prohibition of indiscriminate weapons. The entire camp culminated in the highlight of the camp - Raid Cross, a game in which participant are placed in the roles of the various people involved in an armed conflicts, such as the humanitarian workers, snipers, army generals, civilians etc. The Exploring Humanitarian Law programme will be officially launched next year as part of Red Cross Youth 60th Anniversary Celebrations. One of the major highlights for 2011 occurred on 2 Feburary when CHIJ Red Cross celebrated her establishment as an active member of the Red Cross Youth, which forms an integral part of the Red Cross Movement in Singapore. Below is an excerpt of the congratulatory letter from Mr Ling Khoon Chow, Director of Red Cross Youth:

We heartily congratulate the CHIJ RCY unit for having stood steadfast and true to her values. We

also acknowledge the blood and tears, joy and laughter that have been shared amongst the cadets through its

participation in various RCY events like the First Aid and Evacuation, Current Affairs, the Arts Festivals and

the glory of championship at the Foot Drill Competitions. Indeed, it is an honour to see CHIJ RCY through

the various stages of growth as she develops into ‘A Woman of Distinction’. We call upon all members of

CHIJ RCY to conduct themselves with compassion, passion and professionalism.

international Festivals. The Band was one of the 19 out of 149 Secondary School Bands in Singapore to be awarded the prestigious Gold Medal at the 2007 Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging of Concert Bands. In December 2005, the band was awarded a rare Gold with Distinction at the 21st Century International Band Competition held at Genting Highlands, Malaysia. In June 2008, a total of 113 members travelled to Beijing, China, to participate at the Beijing International Band Festival and was awarded a Gold Medal. Only 2 gold Medals were given to a total of 13 participating bands. This is the largest group of students to go overseas for competition in the history of our school. In 2010, the Band travelled to Australia, Sydney, to participate at the Australian International Music Festival with 98 students and was awarded a Silver Medal.

CHIJ Concert Band has been invited to perform at the Singapore Istana for His Excellency President S.R. Nathan, in addition to numerous other public and school performances. Her major annual concert “Fantasia,” as well as her subsidiary concert “Faith, Hope, and Love,” has been well-received and sold to full house year after year. CHIJ Concert Band plays an integral role in the aesthetics and cultural life of the school, with over 130 girls participating in the band programme. The Band continues to be a leading CCA in CHIJ Secondary, one of the anchors for the Performing Arts, and a success factor that contributed towards the Sustained Achievement Award, leading to the establishment of our school as a Centre of Excellence for Language and The Arts.

In line with the school’s motto “Simple in Virtue, Steadfast in Duty,” the Band believes in the value of diligence and hard work in her continual quest for musical excellence.

IJDE focuses on contemporary dance with an Asian flavour while being relevant and staying grounded with the strong foundations of western dance. The range of dance styles allows the dancers to appreciate and understand the beauty in various forms of dance. In IJDE, dancers are also given opportunities to choreograph their own works, with the intention of showcasing them during school functions. This allows them to be leaders in their own right and hone their interests in the art form through directing themselves. Dancers are also given a general education in the World of Dance. For example in 2011, they were exposed to a whole term of learning ballroom dancing. Thus, our dancers are equipped with a good mix of practical dance knowledge as well as a reasonable in depth understanding of the theoretical aspect of dance. This allows them to view performances with a critical eye and be able to infuse their knowledge into their own choreographed works. IJDE took part in dance grand prix Italy 2011, coming home with three trophies: Best in ethnic category, best in choreography and best in overall performance. Nearly 20 teams took part from countries in all 6 continents. This reveals the dedication and passion the dancers place into their work. We are also a regular fixture in MOE, national-level concerts or performance and events. For example certain events that IJDE has taken part in would be the recent Youth Olympic Games , the Asian Youth Games, the MOE Principals forum and many more. This provides our dancers with several platforms to display their passion and tweak their skills. We are extremely grateful for the support of the school, alumni and the dance choreographers for allowing us to reach such heights.

All ARC members are given annual opportunities to represent the school in the competitions that are planned for the year such as the National Junior Robotics Competition. Members are expected to attend 2 sessions each week during the non-competitive season and more during the competitive periods. Through these competitions, our students foster a strong relationship between their team members and acquired many valuable life skills such as time and stress management, conflict resolution, presentation and many more. From these experiences, many students developed a strong sense of accomplishment in their work and self- confidence. Contrary to the belief that we only concentrate in building robots for competitions, we are also involved in many other activities such as fund raising, website design, posters design, video making and organizing robotics camp or competition for primary schools students. Students who join the CCA will learn a new Integrated Robotic System in 2012 known as the Moway Robot. (URL: http://www.moway-robot.com/index.php?lang=en) Students may wish to purchase these educational kits for their own use through a bulk order at a subsidized rate. In this CCA, students are given ample opportunities to excel in their IT skills, such as project competitions to hone their skills on multimedia presentation. In 2011, club members took an enrichment module to create iPhone book apps for their iPhones. In 2012, club members went for an enrichment module to Republic polytechnic to learn about aviation. Although it would be a CCA of choice for students who were from computer clubs and info-comms club during primary school, all students who wish to join the ARC need no background or past knowledge in programming or Lego. We have dedicated trainers and teachers who will guide the students and seniors who are more than willing to share their knowledge. The only requirement is the zeal in the student to be a technologically informed IJ student with a willingness to learn and explore. Students are required to have a keen interest in the area of Science, Mathematics and be enthusiastic in all ARC activities. Limited places only.
