Purpose of the COE Study Away Costa Rica course:

To engage with culturally different others and understand how children and their families, for whom English is not their first language, feel when they come to our schools and classrooms where everything, including learning, is in English.

How can our teachers help all children be successful in our schools?

“My advice for people considering this study abroad experience is to be willing to step out of their comfort zone and know that there will be times that are stressful and hard, but make the most of it because the end result is absolutely amazing. Try to speak as much Spanish as you can even if you are not very good. Take tons and tons of pictures and just take in everything Costa Rica has to offer. Be willing to create deep relationships with strangers and have a ton of fun with the kids in the schools. My overall experience was great and I am so proud of everything I did and all the things that I learned. I am so eager to have ELL in my future classroom so I can truly help them and feel confident doing so because I know what it is like to be in their shoes. I feel so proud to have the knowledge I gained in this course to help my ELL and me.”

“I went on this trip thinking I would learn about ELL, but I learned so much more than that. I learned about myself, and for that I am grateful.”
