Last Meeting: 24 February 2015, Milton Keynes, UK (Cerulean)

Summary of the activities and discussion: Periodical collaborative studies to improve r&R: the results of the 10th

study were discussed with the group. Potential parameters that could influence r&R have been discussed:

Diameter measurement Air flow CM7 to verify conditioning Holder constructions

Next collaborative study setup.

Changes in the study protocol versus the 9th study: Diameter measurement; use 1 method to the extend possible

(contactless measurement).

Holder construction; as a result of the diameter change.

Conditioning of test pieces: use CM7 as control product for the weight.

Air flow while smoking; set to a value instead of ‘straight smoke plume’.

Comments: The individual results have been expressed in mg/cigar and in mg/g.

For practical considerations, only the results in mg/cigar have been used in the statistical study.

Main conclusions on outcome 10th CS: No outliers detected. Few number of stragglers. Sample A: Mean, r & R estimations in line with previous studies. Sample C: Mean & r estimations in line with previous studies, R

estimations lower than previous CS. Sample D: lower Mean than previous studies, r estimations in line & R

estimations in a good trend.

The changes made in the 10th CS seem to have a positive impact on the R estimations

Main overall conclusions 10th CS: Only limited improvements in the r&R results compared with previous studies.

Some attributable to the modified protocol.

When comparing the Cigar and Cigarette methods, it should be clear that for the cigar methods, the r&R values are also likely to be higher due to the lower number of cigars smoked to obtain one result (8 cigars vs. 20 cigarettes).

But some main reasons of higher r&R results are also product related (natural tobacco wrappers, non tight seams, single leaf variability, etc.) and production related (weight, pressure drop, circumference, porosity variability, etc.).

Actions to try to improve r&R?

Sub-Group Cigar Smoking Methods

Additional actions to reduce r&R going forward:

Diameter measurement as CS10. Air flow back to CRM description. Conditioning check by CM7 as in CS10. New: more specific description of the holder construction.

Additional parameters to be discussed during the next Sub-Group Meeting.

Future activities: In the 11th Collaborative Study, products A (CM7), C (Agio) and D (Imperial

Tobacco) will be smoked in order to try to improve repeatability “r” and reproducibility “R”, again taking potential improvements into account.

Product G (CM8) will be included to create a data bridge for future studies. Smoking of the 11th CS will take place in October 2015 (10 participating

labs). The test results will be sent to Scandinavian Tobacco Group by 31 October

2015. ITG will do the statistical analysis in December-January 2016 and will

finalize the report by February 2016.

Next meeting: February/March 2016 (most likely in Brussels, Belgium).
