WOW! After 6+ years of supporting men and women in our fantastic profession, who belong
to ARCH Canada ... I retire... Not quit, just step aside so that new ideas can be generated
and bring even greater growth to the Association I love...
On May 12th the AGM will be held in Vancouver at the Best Western Downtown and the
new Board of Directors will take us into the next 5 years of development. Since we began
this journey, our goal has been to provide our profession in Canada an Association with the
highest standards and we have accomplished that. We are in 5 Provinces and growing
weekly. We are the first Association in Canada to provide effective and inexpensive
Professional Liability Insurance. We have since added a unique Medical, Dental Health
Plan for members. And there have been challenges ... first, the Ontario legislation which has
caused the profession to rethink how it will present itself and not lose its ability to provide
the support to the public that they need. Second, the growing pains an Association works
through ... as the old song says ... “regrets, I have a few, but too few to mention”. We have
established Reciprocal Affiliations with two of the largest Associations in the UK and
Australia. Developed a website with Resources (scripts, MP3 talks and lectures and much
more - have you investigated the member only area lately?), two secure Forums for
dialogue and in the future, Webinars for continued education.
As I look back on what has been accomplished, I think to myself ... it’s been fun, a hell of a
lot of work, but fun and if I had to do it all over again - in a heartbeat, you bet...
Realize that I will still be in private practice and available to you all for support in your
journey. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of that journey.

And Now for Something Completely
Different …
It was entertainment night at the Senior Centre.
Claude the hypnotist exclaimed, "I'm here to put you into a trance. I intend to hypnotize each
and every member of the audience."
The excitement was almost electric as Claude withdrew a beautiful, antique pocket watch
from his coat. "I want you each to keep your eye on this antique watch. It's a very special
watch. It's been in my family for six generations." He began to swing the watch gently back
and forth while quietly chanting, "Watch the watch, watch the watch, watch the watch....”
The crowd became mesmerized as the watch swayed back and forth, light gleaming off of its
polished surface. Hundreds of eyes followed the swaying watch until, suddenly, it slipped
from the hypnotist's fingers and fell to the floor, breaking into pieces.
"S***!" said the hypnotist.
It took three days to clean up the Senior Centre!!!
Claude was never invited back.
An Acorn Does Not Worry About How to Grow into an Oak Tree,
Does it?
By Kemila Zsange, RCCH
While I love working with all different types of people, if you ask me any particular type that I love to
work with, I’d say: “oh yeah, sure, yes, of course actors”.
Their dramatic characteristic makes them ideal subjects. They love acting, which is essential for
hypnosis. They have experience working with different types of helping people such as agents and
acting coaches, so they understand the value of my job. And let’s be honest, they are often
gorgeous looking people.
Or maybe, I just watched too much of the TV series Necessary Roughness, and got carried away
by Dr. Dani Santino, a psychotherapist, or the “hot hypno-chick” as my partner Tim and I like to call
her. Who does not love the idea of working with high profile clients? And the good thing about
hypnosis is that I can start anywhere and make professionals high profile.
I guess that is how my subconscious processes set the point of attraction. One day I got a phone
call from Cynthia (not her real name). She’s having an audition in 3 days and wants to make an
appointment for her “performance anxiety” as soon as possible.
I realize she has to prepare for the character, so I tell her to prepare as much as she can first and
only come to see me the afternoon of the day before.
She comes. I get her to talk about the character Tina first, and what she likes about her. She goes
into a light trance by speaking about Tina. Before we start, I tell her we are going to do a mental
rehearsal in trance, “so that not only your conscious mind, but also your subconscious mind, in fact,
not only your mind, but also your body, your skin, every muscle, every cell, every fiber is going to
remember the lines tomorrow. As a matter of fact, you don’t even need to remember a thing. Tina
will just come out of you the moment you walk into the audition room.” This is compounded and
reinforced in trance, “They may call you Cynthia when you walk into the room, but that’s ok. You are
good at acting, you can act as if you are Cynthia even though you know you are Tina for as long
as you are in the audition room.”
(Continued Next Page)
The day after the audition, the phone rang, “I don’t know what happened. I was so calm. I
connected with them the moment I walked into the audition room. This never happened before…
I don’t even know exactly what happened. It’s like everything fell into place by itself… Oh my
God, what they told my agency is unbelievable…”
It takes less than two minutes for induction. She’s in somnambulism very soon. I have her relax
only deeper and deeper while I tell her this story of an acorn. From germinating, sprouting to
growing bigger and bigger, until almighty, the acorn doesn’t seem to worry how it is going to
happen, or whether it’s going to grow into an oak tree or something else. During the process of
growing, there isn’t much work to do from outside – because you know how to act. Nothing can
really stop an acorn from growing into an oak tree, because you know how to act. Given it
enough soil, sunlight and nutrition as a whole supporting team, it is natural and inevitable that
acorns are growing into a beautiful oak trees (maybe my lovely accent makes it sound like
“actress” to her? Maybe it’s just her lovely subconscious willing to think so? I don’t know.).
It takes her a while to open her eyes. Her fingers are not working very well while she writes the
cheque. “Is this normal?” She asked. “Oh, absolutely, just like Tina.” She laughs because she
knows what I’m referring to. I suggest that she take a little walk in Stanley Park before driving
home – “a therapeutic combo” as I always say to my clients.
At the doorway, I act as if I just remember something, “Oh yes, I want to tell you this. It’s not the
panel’s job tomorrow to judge you, Cynthia, how well you can act.”
She looks at me, puzzled.
I go on slowly, “So you can set that idea aside. They only have one job, and one interest. It is to
find Tina. And YOUR JOB, is to help them find her, because you have this secret. Only you
know where they can find her.”
She nods her head, beaming.

Case Study By Susan Jennifer Grace, RHt, CI, M.NLP
Practicing in the classroom setting with fellow students and working with volunteers for the case
study segments of any hypnosis course is one thing. Working with real cases after graduation, is
quite a different kettle of fish and can be quite daunting at first.
Over the past few years, I have been emailed by dozens of newly certified hypnotherapists
requesting that I publicize some of my client case histories. I decided to submit a few of the more
interesting cases to the Sub-Conscious Connection over the next few publications. Names, dates
and some other facts in any published case studies have been changed to respect client
confidentiality. In all cases where a client is under the care of any medical practitioner, for physical
or emotional reason, a consent form/referral was obtained prior to any hypnosis sessions.
CASE STUDY
Presenting Issue - 34-year old male named “Bill”, confined to a wheelchair, due to congenital
disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, type 111. An overactive bladder is just one of the symptoms of
his disease.
Bill has had many wonderful successes in his life, including earning a Master’s degree in Business.
At his place of employment, there are often social gatherings, meetings and presentations that Bill is
expected to attend. These meetings are often a cause of anxiety for Bill due to his physical
disabilities. Even the perceived fear of possible incontinence increases his anxiety. The result of his
anxiety is often an actual inability to control his bladder. He requested hypnosis to relieve his
anxiety and increase his confidence, especially in the anxiety-provoking situations, so that he would
have control over his bladder. Amongst many other medications, Bill is prescribed 5 mg Diptropan
daily for the overactive bladder. The medication is generally very successful in helping with the
symptoms of Bill’s overactive bladder. However, whenever Bill is in an anxiety-provoking situation,
the Ditpropan is not as effective. The anxiety is a sub-conscious emotion. The more Bill worries
about that anxiety, the more the anxiety causes his bladder to become overactive. In these
instances, the anxiety negates the benefits of the medication.
Objectives
1. With the use of hypnosis, increase Bill’s confidence in peer group social situations 2. With the use of hypnosis, increase Bill’s relaxation skills so that he can learn to instantly
become relaxed in any situation 3. With the use of hypnosis and visualization, establish an imaginary control panel in Bill’s
bladder, with an ON/OFF switch.
During the first hypnosis session, Bill was given a full explanation of what hypnosis is, what it is not,
and how it can be used. It was explained that hypnosis is not to replace any of his medications or
treatments, but that it could greatly increase his confidence and help him to overcome the anxiety
which was causing his bladder to become overactive in certain situations.
(Continued Next Page)
The Intervention – Session 1
Bill was guided into a medium hypnotic trance, using Autogenic Relaxation Technique©
(ART - refer to Subconscious Connection, Spring 2011) and deepening techniques. Prior to the
induction the wording of the ART phrases was checked for suitability, due the physical condition of
Bill’s limbs.
Once Bill had eye catalepsy, a variety of hypnosis techniques and NLP techniques were used to
increase Bill’s confidence in all areas of his life. After the session, when Bill was once again in
conscious awareness, he was taught those same techniques so that he could continue to reinforce
his confidence whenever he needed.
Autogenic Relaxation Technique © was also taught to Bill so that he could get himself into a deeply
relaxed state whenever he felt anxious or whenever he wanted to give himself positive affirmations
to increase his confidence.
A second appointment was set up, one week from the first session. During that week, Bill
committed to practicing the relaxation techniques and confidence-building techniques. He reported
that he felt much more relaxed in all situations, and that he was convinced that hypnosis would be
able to increase his confidence and improve his overactive bladder.
The Intervention – Session 2
Bill had enjoyed his hypnosis experience during the first session, and had continued to practice
self-hypnosis during the following week. He was easily able to achieve a deep state of trance
during the second session. Once it was determined that Bill was in a deep hypnotic trance, he was
asked to imagine himself as a mini Bill, just 2 inches tall, climbing to the top of his own head. Bill
was asked to use his creative mind to imagine a trap door on top of his head, where mini Bill could
climb in and enter Bills body. With verbal guidance during the visualization, Bill was encouraged to
see, feel, hear or sense mini Bill moving through Bill’s body all the way down to the bladder. Once
Bill indicated that he was vividly visualizing this imaginary scenario, he was given instructions to
add an imaginary ON /OF switch attached to his bladder. Bill indicated that he was easily able to
add the ON/OFF switch to his visualization. It was suggested that it was mini Bill’s job from now
on, to turn the switch to the ON position ONLY when it was appropriate for Bill to urinate and to the
OFF position when it was inappropriate for Bill to urinate. Bill was given instructions, during
hypnosis, that from now on, whenever he needed to empty his bladder and it was appropriate to do
so, he would imagine mini Bill turning the bladder switch to the ON position. As soon as Bill had
voided and it was appropriate to do so, he would imagine mini Bill turning the bladder switch to the
OFF position. This suggestion was offered several times during the session and was also
established as a post-hypnotic suggestion. Future pacing, testing several scenarios in a variety of
future times, (one week, one month, 3 months, 1 year, 5 years and 10 years) in Bill’s future, was
also part of this session. In each future-paced scenario, Bill reported that he was confident,
relaxed and completely and comfortably continent.

Upon emerging, Bill was encouraged to continue using the visualization in conscious awareness,
basically training his conscious mind as well as his sub-conscious mind to respond to the imaginary
bladder switch. This type of learned conditioned response is used frequently in hypnotherapy, and
is highly successful.
In conclusion, the prescribed bladder medication had worked very well until sub-conscious triggers
(social situations) caused anxiety. The options for Bill were to either increase the Diptropan dosage
or use hypnosis and visualization techniques to reduce the anxiety and increase confidence.
During a follow-up session, Bill reported that he was feeling very comfortable in all social situations
now. He has not needed to increase the Diptropan dosage since the bladder switch technique is
working beautifully.

Ask Auntie Arch … Question:
Has anyone seen or heard from Auntie Arch? She watched the first episode of that new TV
show with Betty White “Off Their Rockers” and she hasn’t been the same since!
First she booked a cruise, and then there was mention of botox …
Please, let us know if any of you hear from her but for pity’s sake approach her with caution!
