The Talk About Canada!(TM) Scholarship Quiz Operation Dialogue's Contest Gets Teens Chatting About Canada
Is Canada getting squeezed out between conversations about last night's episode of The OC and Britney's latest beau? Not according to the results of a contest created last year to engage graduating high school students in Canada's national narrative. "There is a growing sense that Canadians are developing an appetite for knowledge about the events and personalities that shape their country," said Operation Dialogue's Program Director, Judy Anderson. "In its first year, the Talk About Canada Scholarship Quiz revealed that students are excited about a fun way to learn more about those great achievements. It made them think about their own role in this great country." This year's Talk About Canada! (TM) Scholarship Quiz gives graduating Cégep students in Quebec and high school students in the other provinces and territories an opportunity to win a scholarship of up to $5000. The on-line contest runs from January 30 to February 16, 2004 at www.talkaboutcanada.ca. This quiz is like no other scholarship contest. It is intentionally designed to draw upon most young peoples' natural curiosity and attraction to games. It encourages them to share questions with friends and family. It gives them tips for finding answers on-line -- each question provides links to Canadian web sites where information can be found. Contestants have the entire contest period to research and respond to the questions. "Students don't expect that Céline Dion's performance in an animated Disney movie could have anything to do with earning a university scholarship," said Anderson. "This contest tries to make Canadian studies interesting by mixing fun questions with more significant ones." Examples of contest questions include: Question: What terrifying disease, responsible for killing and paralyzing millions, was brought under control in 1953 when a Canadian medical researcher, Dr. Leone Farrell, developed the "Toronto Technique" which allowed laboratories to mass-produce a vaccine? (Answer: Polio) Question: Which goalie shocked the hockey world in 1959 by deciding to use a hockey mask in an NHL game, even though coaches and fans criticized him severely? He changed the way hockey was played forever. (Answer: Jacques Plante) Every student who answers all the questions correctly will be included in a draw for 40 scholarships of $1000 and one major scholarship of $5000. Operation Dialogue is a non-partisan, independent, charitable organization, which was formed in 1998 to engage Canadians in a lively and passionate dialogue about what it means to be Canadian. This contest is one of Operation Dialogue's ongoing initiatives to inspire Canadians to share their enthusiasm for their country's heritage and to recognize the importance of this country as a nation.

PREVENTING SLIPS AND FALLS
Slip hazards exist when there is not enough friction or "slip
resistance" between your feet and the walking surface.
FLOORS SHOULD BE KEPT CLEAN, DRY AND FREE OF OBSTACLES.
Cover any spill (e.g., juice, water or oil) with a chair or other visible object. Report immediately for clean up by the Caretaker. Slippery stairs Report any stair missing non-skid strips to the Caretaker and/or Principal. This could be particularly hazardous when many people are using the stairs, such as at dismissal times or fire drills. Icy walkways during inclement weather • Wear appropriate footwear (i.e., good traction, flat heel) for your own protection. • Report icy conditions immediately to the Caretaker and/or Principal.
Reduce the risk of slipping, take your time and pay attention to where you are going.
If you have any questions please call Corrado Maltese 416-222-8282 ext. 2665
or Louise Barker 416-222-8282 ext. 2674. TCDSB Occupational Health and Safety Department

The Compassionate Leadership Program Intensive 2004
February 13, 14 and 15; February 27, 28 and 29, 2004
The Compassionate Leadership Program is a core program of The Hannon-Shields Centre for Leadership and Peace. The CLP Intensive will be offered over two weekends, each with a particular focus related to compassionate leadership. Weekend One: We spend time looking at our own particular life journey and what we have learned
in the process. Recognizing that no life is without conflict, we look at its meaning in our lives, how we deal with conflict and how we might move truthfully and creatively to resolution of conflict.
Weekend Two: Recognizing our basic interdependence, despite our differences, we look at
maintaining connections. In examining organizational models and our own particular personality type, we develop strategies for interaction, recognizing our basic interdependence despite our differences. Then, trusting the process of transformation when it is rooted in compassion, justice and truth, we look toward the future and how we can use the gift of who we are in relationship to our community and the world.
Please note that Friday sessions are held from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. and Saturday sessions are held from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Sunday sessions are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The program is facilitated by members of the leadership team of The Hannon-Shields Centre for Leadership and Peace. The program is open to people of diverse backgrounds who wish to explore and develop their abilities for compassionate service and leadership. A wide variety of people have found the program valuable: professionals, tradespersons, retirees, homemakers, volunteers, etc.
