Why is this project needed? The ENMAX No. 65 Substation has been designated as critical transmission infrastructure by the Government of Alberta. AltaLink’s proposed 400 metres of transmission line is required to connect the ENMAX No. 65 Substation to the electrical transmission system.

How can you provide input?Your input is important to us and we will work with you to understand and address any questions or concerns you may have. AltaLink’s representatives will contact landowners, residents and occupants near the proposed project area. We are also hosting open houses where project team members will be available to discuss the project, answer questions and receive your feedback.

What are the project details? AltaLink is proposing to build approximately 400 metres of new transmission line to connect the proposed ENMAX No. 65 Substation to an existing AltaLink transmission line named 911L on SW 36-22-29-W4.

The proposed transmission line will be energized at 240,000 volts (240 kV).

The new transmission line structures will be:

• double circuit

• steel monopole

• approximately 43 metres tall (141 feet)

• located on a right-of-way 75 metres wide (246 feet)

Visit our information centreThe information centre provides the opportunity to meet with AltaLink representatives at times that are convenient for you. The information centre will open Monday, November 15, 2010, and will remain open until Friday, November 19, 2010. If you cannot attend an open house and would like to complete a one-on-one consultation you can either arrange a time in advance or drop by at a time that’s convenient for you.

Attending our open housesOur representatives will be available at our open houses to share information, gather your input and answer any questions you may have. We will also have project information for you to review. Open house information is located on the front page of this newsletter.

Your input is important to usFollowing the one-on-one consultations, open houses and information centre, we will consider stakeholder comments in our project evaluations and summarize the input received from stakeholders in our Facilities Application (FA). The FA describes our plans to meet technical requirements set by the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) and includes information on routing, environment, costs, project components, schedule and our participant involvement program. We will submit the FA to the AUC for consideration.

The AUC is a quasi-judicial agency established by the Alberta government that ensures the fair and responsible delivery of our utility services. We have enclosed a copy of the AUC brochure Public Involvement in Needs Or Facilities Applications, which describes how you can be involved in the AUC process.

What happens during construction?Depending on where you are in relation to the project you may see or hear construction crews working on the project site. Any noise associated with the construction and/or operation of the new facilities will comply with the AUC’s Noise Control Rule 12 and any other relevant provincial noise regulations and standards. Following all applicable federal and provincial government legislation and requirements, our contractors will use appropriate techniques to protect water quality, soil, other vegetation and wildlife habitat.

What about Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMF)?AltaLink recognizes that some people are concerned about EMF and we treat those concerns very seriously. AltaLink has experts who are available on request to measure the EMF or noise levels around your home, and ensure that all ungrounded metallic objects such as metal buildings and fences near the transmission line are properly grounded if necessary. For more information please refer to the brochure A Dialogue on Electric & Magnetic Fields included with this information package.
