Success at PCYC in Tacklingthe Achievement Gap
NEWS FLASH: The just released Growth and Learn-
ing Results (GLR’s) show that children and youth in
PCYC school and afterschool programs are catching
up rapidly!
GLR # 1: 41 student scholars graduated from
the PYC Arts and Tech High School as the
Class of 2011.
GLR #2: 99% of the graduates plan to attend
college in the fall.
GLR #3: 100% of the elementary children in
the After School Enrichment Program made AT
LEAST a year’s growth in reading during our
school year 2010-11 program.
GLR #4: 41% made MORE THAN a year’s
growth in reading in the same nine-month time
period.
GLR #5: 85% of the After School children
scored more than 80% on their Spring 2011
Math assessment, compared to 60% in Spring
2010 and only 22% in Spring 2009.
PCYC is meeting its strategic goal to “Tackle the
Achievement Gap Head-On.” Objectives to carry out
that goal are based on the latest research in our high
school and in elementary after school program.
The high school strategies have centered on the infu-
sion of arts into core curriculum and afterschool pro-
gramming, strong professional development in
successful teaching practices and instructional lead-
ership, wraparound health and wellness activities and
services, strong career preparation, and focused atten-
tion on students as scholars.
The elementary After School Enrichment Program
uses a winning mix of focused academic instruction
and proven youth development strategies resulting in
both academic progress and good social development.
These results are achieved through the collaborative
efforts of PCYC staff, volunteers and donors, Min-
neapolis Public Schools, NorthPoint Health and Well-
ness Center, Achieve Mpls!, the University of
Minnesota, Northside Achievement Zone, and many
other organizations.

2 PCYC Annual Report 2009
June 2011
Dear Friends of PCYC,
PCYC life changed drastically in the last two weeks of May. On Sunday, May 22, a tornado devastated parts of North
Minneapolis. One week later, Sunday, May 29, Mike Johnson, our PCYC Director of Administration, suffered a sudden,
fatal heart attack. More than 250 people gathered to celebrate his life in a memorial service at PCYC’s Capri Theater.
Our hearts are full of gratitude for all that Mike gave to PCYC and this community in the eleven years he was with us.
He was our brother, our friend, our valued and trusted colleague. He lit up our work and enriched our collective life and
mission.
As we reflect back on 2010 in this annual report, we had a great year for the growth and development of participants in
all PCYC programs. The 2010-2011 school year saw unprecedented academic achievement in our elementary after-
school program and for our PYC Arts & Technology High School. We opened a new program with major state funding
to support children in the “Choice is Yours” program, and the kids and families it serves are reporting positive results.
Small but significant events also dotted the school landscape including the play “Getting Out” written and produced by
our high school students in partnership with the Minneapolis Police Department’s 4th Precinct at the Capri Theater in
November. It has won the MPD Chief’s Award of Merit and is in the running for another award from MetLife.
The Capri Theater had a banner year for audience growth and programming excellence. A planning process convened by
the PCYC board in the the fall of 2010 resulted in refined operating principles and programmatic direction for our
cultural arts programs. Progress continues on securing the adjacent buildings to the Capri, and design plans are being
drawn to achieve programming goals once we close on the sale and raise the capital funds.
PYC Arts & Tech High School’s enrollment has increased by at least a third over the last academic year. Many students
enrolled here due to other schools closing and other educational disruptions. Our school staff made heroic efforts to
open our doors to all displaced students, even though it has necessitated expenditures beyond our budget. Yet we
believe it is the only honorable course of action and we welcome our new students into the PCYC family.
You will note in our financial report that our income did not cover our expenses in 2010. Most of that is paper loss be-
cause of our high depreciation costs, but some was operating loss. We know that reasons cannot be excuses, yet PCYC
is simply in the same situation of many other nonprofits -- philanthropic funding sources have reduced giving amounts
or changed their priorities. Our United Way income remains stable but flat, and our faithful individual donors are
holding their own. We need to grow our base of support, and the PCYC board is working diligently on our plan to
achieve financial growth and stability. We’re confident we can work through this challenging situation successfully.
We renewed our status of “Meets Standards” with the Charities Review Council. This process assesses all our structures,
policies and practices to assure our organization is governed well and that we treat our donors properly.
Finally, about the tornado. The maps show (and the damage proves) that it passed within half a block of PCYC. We are
humbled and grateful that our campus sustained only minimal damage, yet we grieve for our neighbors who were less
fortunate. This Northside community is having to deal with yet another blow to its stability and livability.
Hopefully in the midst of the disaster, the residents and the greater Twin Cities community have come forth in droves to
help one another. We are so proud of North Minneapolis and its people and honored to be part of this community.
We need to be especially present for the children this summer, as the effects of the trauma begin to emerge. Your gifts to
our Tornado Recovery Fund will give us the resources to respond quickly with emergency aid and supportive program-
ming for as many youth and families as possible. Please keep all of us, including the PCYC family, the family and
friends of Mike Johnson, and our neighbors in North Minneapolis in your thoughts and prayers. In the words of our
founders, PCYC is “Dedicated to the Task of Renewal” still and again.

Bright Futures in Action at PCYC
PCYC Perspect ives 3
We lost a treasured member of our Ply-
mouth Christian Youth Center (PCYC)
family. Mike Johnson, PCYC's Direc-
tor of Administration for the past 11
years, died on May 29, 2011, while on
a camping trip with his family.
During his years at PCYC Mike had
the major responsibility of shepherding
through the planning and development of the PCYC campus in
North Minneapolis, including the construction of PCYC's head-
quarters and the renovation of the Capri Theater.
“Mike was my brother, my friend, my valued and trusted col-
league. He lit up our work and our time together,” said Anne Long,
Executive Director of PCYC.
Mike was also one of the founders of MACC CommonWealth
seven years ago, and served as its first Vice President for Human
Resources. He accepted a new position late in 2010 as Vice Pres-
ident for Member Services. He balanced his weeks in service to
both PCYC and MACC CommonWealth.
“Those of us who worked with him benefitted every day from his
deep expertise, whole-hearted commitment, boundless enthusi-
asm, great energy and personal humility,” said Stan Birnbaum,
president of MACC Commonwealth. “He saw the best in all of us
and overlooked everything else. We are impoverished beyond
words.”
Mike was also active on the board of directors of the former West
Broadway Business Association and the West Broadway Area
Coalition. “He was a great leader” said Jim Wentzell who served
on the board with Mike.
Mike was also deeply involved with the Community Emergency
Assistance Program (CEAP) during his last 11 years in Minnesota,
including serving at the time of his death as Chair of the Board of
Directors.
The family requests that memorials be directed to either:
PCYC, 2210 Oliver Ave. N., Minneapolis, MN 55411
CEAP, 6840 78th Ave. N., Brooklyn Park, MN 55445
Bright Futures in Action at PCYC took shape throughout 2010 by engaging students in activities to enhance academic growth and leadership skills. PYC
students in the “Arts for Social Change” class had their artwork displayed at the local UROC gallery. Other students worked with Minneapolis Police
Department members to create and present the play “Gettin Out,” to promote better understanding among youth and the police. Students in PYC Arts &
Tech High’s Discovery Crew high school after school program also participated in an area Peace Jam conference to strengthen leadership and peace-
building skills. Students met Costa Rican President and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Arias Sanchez. Children in PCYC’s After School Enrichment
Program continued making progress in reading and math making use of various resources including the computer lab to do math and reading exercises,
as well as growing vegetables and flowers.
In Memory of Mike Johnson - A Friend, Colleague & Leader

spirit of North Minneapolis area
