The City has built new trails, shelters, a bathhouse, a dog park, a skateboard park, and the new Sportsfield Recreation Complex, which is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the state of Kansas. Leavenworth Parks and Recreation’s latest initiative is a bridge that will be known as the Five-Mile Creek Pedestrian Bridge. This bridge will connect 14th Street and New Lawrence Road to Tudor, Candlewood and ultimately Lawrence Road. In 1999, a feasibility study was completed to examine all aspects of installing a bridge across Five-Mile Creek in 10th Avenue Park to create a safer pedestrian route. When all is said and done, the Five-Mile Creek Pedestrian Bridge will be an eight-foot- wide by 130-foot-long clear span truss bridge with a weathered steel finish and composite decking on the walkway. The bridge will give children safe access to Warren Middle School, keeping them from having to walk down Lawrence Road (County Road 5) where there is no sidewalk and Parks and Recreation Department staff is extremely excited about the project as it has been one of their main priorities since Sportsfield was finished. City Looks Forward to Opening New Pedestrian Bridge over Five-Mile Creekby John Reichley, Parks and Recreation Board Member

Over the last several years, the Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Department has completed a number of improvement projects for the public to enjoy.

It was determined that such a bridge would benefit school children, walkers, joggers, and bicyclists in the area.

This bridge, located at Candlewood Drive and Tudor Drive, is now under construction. Julius Kaaz Construction Company of Leavenworth was chosen as the general contractor for the project after the City bid process was completed and approved by the City Commission.

When all is said and done, the Five-Mile Creek Pedestrian Bridge will be an eight-foot-wide by 130-foot-long clear span truss bridge with a weathered steel finish and composite decking on the walkway. These features will keep the bridge relatively maintenance free for many years.

The bridge will give children safe access to Warren Middle School, keeping them from having to walk down Lawrence Road (County Road 5) where there is no sidewalk and Parks and Recreation Department staff is extremely excited about the project as it has been one of their main priorities since Sportsfield was finished.

The Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled the Grand Opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for Saturday, June 2 at 8:30 a.m. in conjunction with their Five-Mile Creek Walk and National Trails Day. This is an appropriate time to celebrate the new trail connectivity between 10th and 20th streets giving runners, walkers, bicyclists and children many miles of safe routes to use.

Local media and the City website will have information on the project’s expected completion date in May as well as registration information about the grand opening.

Replacement cards are $5 each. Passes are good for the 2012 season only.

SEASON PASSES WILL BE HALF PRICE AFTER JULY 31!Aquatic Center Regulations • Children age 9 and under must be accompanied and directly supervised by an adult age 18 or older.• Proper swim attire required. No thongs, cut-offs, “sagging”, or suits with belts, buckles, rivets, etc. NO street clothes will be allowed past the breezeway.• Improper conduct or profane language will not be tolerated.• No food, beverages (except water), or glass containers will be brought into the facility.• Swim diapers are mandatory for non-toilet-trained persons.• Management reserves the right to refuse admittance to or eject from the aquatic

center premises any person failing to comply with these and other posted health and safety regulations.

Please note that flotation devices are for handicapped persons only! The City of Leavenworth has adopted this policy for the following reasons:Flotation devices are dangerous for young children as they may be difficult to control and tend to be unstable. Furthermore, they often provide a false sense of security and are used as a substitution for adult supervision. The best way to keep your child entertained and safe is being ‘hands on’.
