Welcome!

Welcome to our new look live and film brochures! Tony Johnston, our Marketing and Publicity Officer has undertaken the graphic design in-house and we all think he has done a really great job. We trust you will enjoy leafing through and booking for some of the events we have on offer.

Book your seat early for Lord David Puttnam – this promises to be a really interesting evening and tickets will be sought after.

We are also pleased to be promoting arts events from other organisations: the very special English Song Weekend, St Laurence’s Summer Arts Festival and the Ludlow Fringe.

Many of you will have noticed that the ‘old Visitor Information Centre’ has now been taken over by Tom Dickins Fine Art – and some of you will be wondering why! We are continuing to work hard towards the

Ludlow Assembly Rooms Transformation Project and are currently close to applying for planning permission. You will understand that this process, together with raising funds, all takes time. So rather than move the Box Office and VIC twice, at great cost, we decided it was better the space was used on a temporary basis while at the same time helping us to raise extra funds. We will keep you updated with more news as the project takes shape.

Lastly, we have discovered the ‘rigging’ that the auditorium lights are attached to is in urgent need of repair/replacement. We will, therefore, be closing the auditorium for two weeks during May for these repairs to be undertaken but do look out for films in Oscars instead.

MAN + SUPER MAN THE PIRATES OF PENZANCESung and surtitled in English.

Academy Award® nominee Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient, Schindler’s List) plays Jack Tanner in this exhilarating reinvention of Shaw’s witty, provocative classic.

A romantic comedy, an epic fairytale, a fiery philosophical debate, Man + Superman asks fundamental questions about how we live.

Jack Tanner, celebrated radical thinker and rich bachelor, seems an unlikely choice as guardian to the alluring heiress, Ann. But she takes it in her stride and decides to marry and tame this dazzling revolutionary.

Tanner, appalled by the whiff of domesticity, flees to Spain where he is captured by bandits and meets The Devil, while Ann follows in hot pursuit…

Streamed live from the National Theatre

Sentimental pirates, a blundering policeman, absurd adventures and improbable paradoxes – Gilbert and Sullivan’s dazzling The Pirates of Penzance comes to ENO in a new production by renowned director Mike Leigh (Mr Turner).

This comic opera is a showcase of brilliant humour and razor-sharp wit and features a sparkling score chock-full of memorable melodies and catchy tunes.

This vibrant production is conducted by David Parry and the superb cast includes the ever-versatile Andrew Shore as the very model of a modern Major-General.

CELTIC FIDDLE FESTIVAL

KEVIN BRIDGESWORK IN PROGRESS

Celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, Celtic Fiddle Festival stars: Kevin Burke, a giant of Irish music; renowned fiddler Christian Lemaître (Kornog); and sensational young Quebecois musician André Brunet (De Temps Antan).

The group toasts the violin in all its globe-trotting variations. Along with acclaimed guitarist Nicolas Quemener, the quartet combines their talents, musical traditions, and spontaneous humour for an evening of dazzling energy and subtle grace.

Each artist plays a solo set, showcasing their individual musical styles and traditions, followed by a collaborative set featuring all four musicians. Together, they play with such relentless precision and fire that the tunes transcend all cultural and geographical barriers, leaving the audience with a truly memorable musical experience.

This event is now sold out. We apologise for any diasppointment.

Kevin Bridges returns to the road, stopping off at Ludlow Assembly Rooms to try out brand new material before embarking on his biggest tour to date, A Whole Different Story…

Scotland’s biggest export, Kevin Bridges, dubbed as “brilliant” by one of his comedy idols, Billy Connolly, has had an astonishing rise to success.

His blend of his trademark social commentary, sharp one-liners and laugh-out-loud humour has transformed him into one of the country’s biggest comedy stars.

During this warm-up performance, Kevin will be referring to notes.

THE IMPRESSIONISTS

GRAHAM AND ANN ARNOLD, ROBERT BATES: THREE CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS, TWO FILMS

They are the world’s most popular artists. The works of Cezanne, Monet, Degas and their compatriots fetch tens of millions of dollars. But just who were they really? Why and how did they paint? What lies behind their enduring appeal?

To answer these questions, this film secured unique access to a major new exhibition focussing on the 19th century Parisian art collector Paul Durand-Ruel, the outspoken champion of Impressionism whose brave decision to exhibit these painters in New York in 1886 introduced Americans to modern French painting. In doing so, he not only filled great American galleries with Impressionist masterworks but also kept impressionism alive at a time when it faced complete failure.

Memorials of a Quiet Life looks at the world of Graham and Ann Arnold, who forty years ago, decided to abandon the metropolitan world and move to a remote countryside where they could work uninterrupted. In this film they reminisce about their first encounters with art, the discovery of like-minded artists and the independent quiet world which they created for themselves.

Our other film features artist Robert Bates in conversation. He describes his working methods and demonstrates his watercolour technique for producing his small scale minutely observed and intricately executed landscapes. Shropshire locations Mitchell’s Fold stone circle and mines at Snailbeach lead mines provide inspiration.

Graham Arnold and Robert Bates have solo shows at Silk Top Hat Gallery 1st – 27th June.

SECRET GARDENS OF LUDLOW

THE SIMON & GARFUNKEL STORY

This year we explore an eclectic selection of gardens in Corve Street, Linney, Upper Linney and Mill Street, offering a wealth of horticultural delights plus spectacular views of Ludlow Castle, St Laurence’s Church and the river Teme. Five new gardens, never before open to the public, now offer up their secrets while some popular favourites will delight us once more.

Afternoon teas will be served in Maryvale’s spacious garden while plants, greetings cards and ice creams are on sale in other gardens. The Mini Museum’s collection of old restored woodworking tools and artefacts is again open at 25 Mill Street.

Children under 12 go free but must be accompanied by an adult. Wheelchair access is only available in some gardens. No dogs please.

The fascinating tale of how two boys from Queens became the most successful musical duo of all time returns to Ludlow after delighting audiences last summer.

Direct from London’s West End, award-winning actor Dean Elliott (Buddy Holly in Buddy – The Musical) and a full cast of performers tell The Simon and Garfunkel Story using huge projection photos, original film footage and a full live band, performing the hits that defined a generation, including: Mrs Robinson, Cecilia, Homeward Bound and many more.

Sung and surtitled in English.Academy Award® nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) takes the title role in this dynamic new production of one of English drama’s oldest plays. Directed by Rufus Norris, Everyman now explodes onto the stage in a startling production with words by Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate.

A passionate tale of lust, seduction and betrayal, no other opera boasts as big a following as Bizet’s Carmen. Set during the dying days of Franco’s Spain, Calixto Bieito’s acclaimed production of this must-see opera has been enjoyed by audiences across Europe.

Eriksen’s other notable work hasincluded extensive contributions to Anthony Minghella’s 2004 Oscar-winning film Cold Mountain as well as collaborations ranging from hardcore punk and Bosnian pop to symphony orchestra.

THE SPOOKY MEN’S CHORALEEnnobled by improbable facial hair and dignified with cavernous vocal chords, The Spooky Men’s Chorale have been gleefully smashing up and reassembling the world of men’s singing since 2001. They employ a devastating combination of immaculate musical sensibilities, hair-raising deep harmonies and extreme silliness to explore the paradoxes of latter day masculinity.

The repertoire, which began with

a simple combination of Georgian table songs, immaculate ballads and vaudevillian nonsense, has expanded to include sly and witty commentary on their own favourite body parts, a surfing anthem, and a mock Sufi ode to the Bee Gees - all performed with passion and a twinkle in the eye.

“Inspired – and a triumph of choreography...a fantastic night out is guaranteed!” - Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2
