At Regal, Lakeside, and ADOC Medical Groups, our members can take full advantage of all the free health education classes, programs and events that we offer.

We have spent more than 35 years committed to taking care of our members’ health and well-being. This experience has given us the wisdom to know that good health is more than just having the right doctor – one who understands your culture and speaks your language. It’s also about having the right medical group who is by your side and supports your journey to better health.

We believe that participating in social engagements and interacting with others in a fun and friendly environment helps to promote continued good health and happiness. One way for our members to do just that is to participate in our new Movie Matinee program. Members can attend free movie matinees at their local theater and are welcome to bring along a guest! When

a member brings along a non-Regal/Lakeside/ADOC guest to one of our movie matinees, each will receive a movie ticket available to use for any movie, at any time, at a participating local theater. There are no limits on how many tickets a member can receive. One guest is allowed per reservation and non-members are limited to one movie ticket.

Bladder Health?Overactive bladder can take quite a toll on life: Urge, stress leaks, UTIs, poor sleep, etc. So we went on a mission to extract nature’s most powerful herbs and make a difference in the lives of all who struggle with bladder and urinary tract troubles. After years of research, our formula is now working wonders for women...and men too!

Many products use fruit pulp, or only extract one single alkaloid from an herb, which results in very little active ingredients. Our herbal extractions combine the full range of phytonutrients and beneficial compounds contained in each plant. That’s why our 13 ingredients help support bladder health and function from every angle and are geared towards fast results with longterm benefits.

Complying with the Institutional Review Board protocol under the auspices of board certified New York urologists, clinical studies show results that exceed expectations. It works without raising blood pressure, causing dizziness or constipation. The only side effect is health!

Senior living communities have much to offer. The benefits of

assisted living range from providing assistance with basic hygiene needs to helping older adults build new friendships. The availability of amenities and services make living in a senior community a healthy choice.

Daily Living NeedsWhen a senior loved one requires

help with daily living activities, but still lives at home, the responsibility for their care is often assumed by a family member or by employing a home care aide. Assisted living communities are specifically designed to provide the support seniors need to continue to live as independent a lifestyle as possible.

Physical ActivityElder care benefits can include

physical activity. To encourage physical activity and fitness, many senior communities offer: Exercise classes Fitness equipment Heated, indoor swimming pool Wellness programs

Some communities even have in-

house trainers to help older adults create a senior-friendly fitness program of their own.

Life enrichment activitiesMaintaining social relationships

can be difficult when living at home, especially for those seniors who live alone. Senior communities offer opportunities for socialization by providing planned activities and outings, such as: Field trips to museums, zoos and

local farmer’s markets Cultural events on campus and off Shopping trips to local malls and

storesSeniors are also encouraged to

participate in daily activities that are typically offered in the community’s common areas. These events boost social interaction by providing fun and interesting things to do, and may include programs like: Yoga and Tai Chi Game nights Movie nights Special interest groups like wa-

tercolor painting and scrapbook-ing

Opportunities for intellectual stimulation are also provided.

LMany communities offer interesting learning choices that include, for example: Book club Computer classes Art classes Gardening groups

Communities located near a college campus often have arrangements with the school to offer their seniors the ability to utilize campus resources, which may include, for instance, the library, courses, and cultural events.

NutritionOne of the challenges many

seniors face stems from the lack of proper nutrition. It happens for many reasons including: Lack of transportation to the gro-

cery store Loss of appetite, sometimes the

result of medication side effects Not following their physician-rec-

ommended special diet Cooking for one seems like too

much troubleSenior living communities have the

ability to offer not only nutritionally balanced meals, but meals designed for those with specific medical conditions. Most communities provide three daily meals along with healthy snacks throughout the day.

TransportationWhen a senior begins to

struggle with driving, the loss of transportation can present a hardship. Losing their independence and having to rely on friends and family for transportation to appointments and for shopping can create unhealthy stress. Senior living communities provide transportation services for routine outings, as well as special appointments.

Home Maintenance and Housekeeping

Caring for a home is a lot of work. As we grow older, maintenance becomes more difficult, repairs are delayed, and routine housekeeping needs sometimes overlooked. Living in a senior community where these tasks are done for residents can help decrease stress and the risk of injury.

We are all familiar with the phrase, “stop and

smell the roses,” but how often do we pause to appreciate our ability to hear our environment? Conversations with friends, birds singing, the sound of music, and the joy of children’s laughter are only a few examples.

For the vast majority of us, hearing health will diminish over the years. According to a 2011 study conducted by Johns Hopkins Medicine, nearly one in five Americans experience some sort of hearing loss. By age 65, that number increases to one in three. The more we ignore these changes, the greater the chance our hearing will continue to decline.

Connect Hearing provides a strong network of convenient neighborhood hearing care

centers that continuously strive to find innovative ways to serve you better. In other words, Connect Hearing has a passion for helping the surrounding communities to stay connected to the sounds of life.

For years, Connect Hearing has been providing California with outstanding patient care. We value our ability to customize hearing solutions to help patients’ individual needs with the most advanced state-of-the-art hearing aids.

When it’s time to start thinking about a senior living

community for an aging parent or senior loved one, an early concern for most people is money. Families often wonder how they will help a senior loved one finance the move to assisted or senior living.

An assisted living community is a financially feasible option for many older adults. These communities offer the senior personalized, 24-hour care with the freedom to choose their own activities and to remain independent.

If you’re considering an assisted living community for your loved one, here are the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about financing assisted living care.

Q: How much does an assisted living community cost?

A: The price of senior living communities varies widely based on what area of the country the senior lives, the amount of services they require, and the size of the apartment. There are many options to choose from at most communities, including private and semi-private apartments.

According to the GenWorth Financial 2015 Cost of Care survey, the average cost for assisted living is $43,200. This rate was based on a private, one bedroom apartment.

Monthly rates usually cover rent, utilities, meals, laundry, housekeeping, and wellness programs. Personal care services are typically extra and are based on how much assistance a resident requires.

Q: Does my Parents’ Medicare cover any assisted living expenses?

A: Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover assisted living costs. If a parent has very limited financial resources, some states have a Medicaid waiver program to help finance senior living.

Q: Will my parents’ long-term care insurance policy pay for assisted living?

A: Although this answer varies by policy, many long-term care insurance policies do help finance assisted living. Check your aging loved one’s policy to see if it covers the costs of “custodial care,” which includes assisted living communities.

Q: How do most families finance a move to senior living?

A: Personal funds are the most common method of payment for the cost of senior living. Many families rely on liquidating investments or the proceeds from the sale of their elder family member’s home.

Other options to investigate might include a life insurance settlement from Life Care Funding Group or moving in to a semi-private room to cut down on monthly rent costs.

Q: Is there funding available from the Veteran’s Administration to help veterans finance senior care?

A: Veterans who are at least 65 years old and served during

a time of war may be eligible for benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Spouses are usually eligible for assistance, too. The Aid & Attendance benefit amount from senior to senior. The staff at your local Elmcroft Senior Living community can help you learn more about this benefit.

Finally, we have a tool to help you in your search and to further understand the cost and financing of assisted living facilities. Elmcroft Senior Living’s cost comparison workbook makes it easier to compare one community’s services and expenses with another.

Finding out a family member can no longer safely remain at home often

takes families by surprise. They may not be sure where to turn for help. Utilizing a reputable senior placement agency can make the process easier. An experienced advisor can guide families through the maze of decisions. Every individual and situation is unique. A place that works well for the parent of a friend or neighbor may be completely wrong for another person. Having a trusted advisor to help with the maze of decisions can save time and money, and can add to peace of mind.

Make sure the advisor you choose is knowledgeable about the properties and resources in the local area. Be careful if shopping on the internet for senior housing assistance. Personal information entered on a website may be released to others or even sold

to other companies. When entering information on a website; read the fine print on the Privacy Policy. Often it states they reserve the right to disclose, sell or share personal and contact information with third parties.

The agent should make every effort to narrow down the choices to those which will best meet their needs, and should be available to address questions and concerns. The family and the referral service should work together to make an informed decision, with the family responsible for the final decision. Placement agencies’ services are offered at no cost to families, as they often receive compensation from the facilities after a resident moves in. Linda Armas is the owner of Clear Choice Senior Services, Inc. and current President of Southern Cal Association of Senior Referral Agencies.

Although most older adults know at least one person residing

at a senior living community, there are often misconceptions about life at a retirement community. Bingo – though still popular – has been replaced with activities such as belly dancing and virtual gaming and for those who think residents “sit around all day”, you may have a hard time keeping up with their busy schedules.

Here are a few of the most com-mon myths about senior living communities:

MYTH: Residents are Frail and in Poor Health

People often equate age with fra-gility and nothing could be further from the truth. At La Vida Real and La Vida Del Mar, residents prove that you can be fit at any age. Whether it is Zumba Gold, Tai Chi or weight training, residents have the opportu-nity to create their own blueprint for healthy living through the onsite fit-ness centers and communities’ well-ness program Fitness Matters®.

Fitness Matters® not only empha-

sizes cardio, strength and balance as key components to staying physically fit, but also focuses on intellectual wellness and social and emotional well-being. Research shows that older adults who choose to move to senior living communities can often add years to their lives. With a holis-tic approach to wellness and fitness, it is easy to see that La Vida Real and La Vida Del Mar residents stay active beyond their years.

MYTH: There is Nothing to DoYou’ll never hear “there’s nothing

to do” at most retirement communi-ties. Typically, a fulltime Program Director is responsible for planning and coordinating lifelong learning classes, entertainment, outings and special events.

La Vida Del Mar and La Vida Real’s Program Directors ensure there is a daily group and/or activity to pique even the most discerning resi-dent’s interest. Art Exhibits? Check. Investment Group? Check. Creative Writing Club? Check.

And although there is a plethora of things to do, residents have the

option to be as active or as relaxed as they wish. From enjoying quick bite at the bistro to watching a clas-sic film in the in-house theatre, there are plenty of options to choose from.

MYTH: You Can’t Come and Go as You Please

Senior living communities offer a “lock and leave” lifestyle. Residents can simply lock their front door and know their residence will be taken care of should they leave for a day or a few weeks. There’s no need to worry about the accumulation of newspapers on the front lawn—a surefire signal to thieves that you’re away—or ask a neighbor to check your mail.

Older adults who drive will find retirement communities welcoming as well, though they often find that with the community’s convenient curbside transportation service, they no longer need to drive as much. Plus many enjoy more evening concerts or cultural entertainment by taking advantage of the shuttle services without worrying about the chal-lenges of night driving

MYTH: They Serve “Hospital Food”When was the last time you

enjoyed a flavorful, fresh salmon filet, lightly seasoned and grilled to order and finished with a drizzle of pesto glaze or herb-crusted spring lamb chops roasted to perfection with an onion mint marmalade? At La Vida

Del Mar and La Vida Real, this is a typical dinner choice for residents.

Both communities’ onsite restau-rants are renowned for having an extensive fine dining menu and are open 12 hours daily, seven days a week offering resident dining flex-ibility. From gourmet international and ethnic cuisine, to comfort foods and heart healthy options, there’s something for everyone!

MYTH: Retirement Communities Are Expensive

When compared to the monthly expenses and upkeep of a house, many older adults have found they actually spend less per month and gain countless additional benefits by moving to a retirement community.

The monthly fee at both commu-nities boasts a full range of services and amenities including 12-hour res-taurant dining, housekeeping, trans-portation and activities for example.

Deciding to move to a Senior Living Community comes with a

number of responsibilities that must be completed if a person wants to be prepared for a new home and ready to leave an old one. For seniors planning to move into retirement living, this is no less true.

Completing all of the necessary tasks may require some help from family and friends, however, particularly when mental or physical abilities have started to decline. Adult children and friends can help make the process of moving to a retirement home as smooth as possible by creating a checklist of items to share with seniors, keeping them in the loop and on top of their move.

Here’s a quick guideline of items to consider when helping a loved one prepare for his or her transition to a new retirement community:

Sell an existing house or apartment

If your loved one owns the home in which they’re currently living, they should look into finding a realtor or agency that can handle the sale. Putting this responsibility in the hands of a professional is an easy way to check this item off the list – however, you still want to be sure to shop around so you know you’re getting a good deal.

Find a moving companyLike selling the house, packing and

moving belongings is a task that will require extra hands. While it may be simple enough to find boxes and other packing materials, when it comes to transporting the packages to an assisted living community, it might be easiest to let a seasoned moving company take that responsibility. Check for reliability, price and mover’s insurance before making a choice.

Change address informa-tion

You might be surprised by how many organizations need or want to know about your loved one’s updated contact information. Of course it’s important to clarify with vital resources such as insurance, banking and health care providers, but don’t forget about non-necessities as well. If your family member is signed up for periodicals or newspapers and want to continue delivery, they’ll also need to be updated on the new address.

Plan for excess itemsIt can be tempting for seniors to

bring everything from their old home with them to a retirement community. Keep in mind, however, that space may be more limited than what they’re used to. If you find your loved one has more belongings than will be reasonable for the new space, consider hosting an estate or garage sale, auction or donating some items to charity.

Hospice ResourcesHospice is traditionally an option

for people whose life expectancy is six months or less, and involves pal-liative care (pain and symptom relief) rather than ongoing curative measures, enabling you to live your last days to the fullest, with purpose, dignity, grace, and support. While some hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care facilities provide hospice care onsite, in most cases hospice is provided in the patient’s own home. This enables you to spend your final days in a familiar, comfortable environment, surround-ed by your loved ones who can focus more fully on you with the support of hospice staff. Everyone works together with the person who is dying, the care-giver, and/or the family to provide the medical, emotional, and spiritual sup-port needed. A member of the hospice team visits regularly and is always avail-able by phone—24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Alzheimer’s and dementia basicsAlzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases.

Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging, although the greatest known risk factor is increasing age, and the majority of people with Alzheimer’s are 65 and older. But Alzheimer’s is not just a disease of old age. Up to 5 percent of people with the disease have early

onset Alzheimer’s (also known as younger-onset), which often appears when someone is in their 40s or 50s.

Alzheimer’s worsens over time. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer’s, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Those with Alzheimer’s live an average of eight years after their symptoms become noticeable to others, but survival can range from four to 20 years, depending on age and other health conditions.

Alzheimer’s has no current cure, but treatments for symptoms are available and research continues. Although current Alzheimer’s treatments cannot stop Alzheimer’s from progressing, they can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. Today, there is a worldwide effort under way to find better ways to treat the disease, delay its onset, and prevent it from developing.

Alzheimer’s is not the only cause of memory loss. Many people have trouble with memory — this does NOT mean they have Alzheimer’s. There are many different causes of memory loss. If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of dementia, it is best to visit a doctor so the cause can be determined.

Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life.Memory loss is an example. Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia.

Dementia is not a specific disease. It’s an overall term that describes a wide range of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities.Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of cases.Vascular dementia, which occurs after a stroke, is the second most common dementia type. But there

are many other conditions that can cause symptoms of dementia, including some that are reversible, such as thyroid problems and vitamin deficiencies.

Dementia is often incorrectly referred to as “senility” or “senile dementia,” which reflects the formerly widespread but incorrect belief that serious mental decline is a normal part of aging.Types of DementiaDementia is a general term for loss of memory and other mental abilities severe enough to interfere with daily life. It is caused by physical changes in the brain.

We at A Better Way in Home Care are committed to helping

you choose the very best in-home care, focusing on the right match of patient and caregiver (a.k.a. professional domestic workers). We refer Caregivers who have undergone a rigorous interview and vetting process. Our founder, Steffi Gaines, has a deep, abiding love for her work and a passion for helping others. Steffi is determined to provide an alternative to the cold and strange world of board and care, assisted living and convalescent facilities by referring you hand-picked Caregivers. Having been in this industry for almost two decades...we can tell you without a doubt, that placing your loved one in

a facility will take away everything that is familiar during one of the most difficult time in their life. Steffi truly believes in empowering her clients, building a foundation of support with you, your family, the Caregiver you hire and our dedicated staff. For many families, choosing care for a loved one is one of the most difficult decisions that will ever have to be made. Whether the patient is recovering from an illness, needs long term care or is terminal. The Caregivers we refer will work hard to nurture you and your loved ones through this difficult time. We have taken the worry out of in-home care for many families, and we can do the same for you. We are, truly, “A Better Way”.

Six music Emmys, two Grammy nominations, three gold records,

seven Public Television specials and 8 million records sold are just some of the accomplishments of our cover man. Add to those stats over 30 years and 50 plus recordings, and you are just scratching the surface of the multi-faceted, ever-evolving musical and broadcast career of John Tesh.

Fresh out of college, Tesh, a Long Island, NY, native began his career as a 22 year-old investigative journal-ist for the CBS affiliate in New York, which would lead to his 10-year run

as anchor on Entertainment Tonight.A natural in front of the camera, he

began covering sports. While he may not have known much about all of the events he was reporting on, he still shined during events like the Tour de France bike race and Olympic gym-nastics.

Still, music was never far away. Combine his love of sports with his contributions as host and music com-poser for the Barcelona and Atlanta Olympic Games, plus his NBA Basket-ball Theme (“Roundball Rock”), the theme song for “The NBA on NBC”

for 12 years beginning in 1990. The song has since been included in the last two Summer Olympic games.

As the self-proclaimed “band geek,” Tesh recalls a Long Island, New York, childhood where every-one was in a band. “Billy Joel was in The Hassles; I had a band called Best of Both Worlds. We even had a full horn section as I played Hammond organ. Who wouldn’t love that?”

But years as a journalist and host of the iconic entertainment TV maga-zine “Entertainment Tonight” under-cut his pitch to the public as a serious musician. Even though he was a sea-soned and trained rocker who had been doing it for years before “E.T.,” people nonetheless assumed that music was simply a vanity project.

His shows have spanned a wide range of venues from the Coliseum in Rome to Carnegie Hall, from The Kennedy Center to Red Rocks Am-phitheater.

His first television concert, Live at Red Rocks, has become the stuff of legend. “The Red Rocks show enabled me to leave TV and pursue music,” he says.

In 1994, Tesh took out a second mortgage to shoot the PBS special in hopes of launching his nascent mu-sic career. “Four songs into the show, rain pours like I’ve never seen,” says Tesh. “I thought, ‘It’s gone.’”

“The orchestra left, but my band stayed. The audience put on slick-ers; they had umbrellas. At the end of every song - complete silence. The audience can’t clap because they’re holding umbrellas. The grand pia-no - completely ruined. But after the fourth song, the rain stopped, the fog rolled in, the moon came out and the orchestra came back. We played the rest of the show, and that was that.” Live at Red Rocks was the first of sev-en John Tesh public television spe-cials that would go on to raise over $20 million for PBS.

A John Tesh concert promises a unique journey via music and sto-rytelling. Tesh will bring his latest show, Grand Piano Live! an intimate evening with the artists to various ci-ites in California later this year.

Along the way, the 64 year-old, six

foot six artist decide to conquer the world of radio and has succeeded with his popular, nationally syndi-cated radio show, Intelligence for Your Life, produced at his guesthouse in Los Angeles with his wife, actress Connie Selleca, who hosts many of the health segments. The show, which provides a bevy of informa-tion and interesting factoids, can be heard nationwide (Tesh.com) and also spawned a family affair of proj-ects with the Intelligence for Your Life TV show and podcast, with wife Con-nie Selleca and son Gib Gerard.

Tesh’s consistent popularity as a TV and Radio broadcaster has only amplified the personal connection with his loyal tribe of fans who get to listen to him 6 days a week on the Intelligence For Your Life radio and television programs. The radio show alone amasses 34 million gross impressions / per week. John’s Face-book page has a weekly reach of 15-20 million engagements/week. The weekly TV program adds another 2 million impressions.

Amidst his constantly busy career, two years ago a metastic prostate cancer diagnosis might have inter-rupted Tesh’s career – but it didn’t, thanks to the love and support of his family.

“When I first got the cancer diag-nosis almost two years ago, I was afraid the radio stations were go-ing to drop me,” says Tesh. “Eventu-ally Connie said, ‘Why don’t you be honest about this and tell them how you’re using your faith along with the medical treatments to get healed. You could really speak to people. It’s this thing where you open up and people

can be touched by it in some manner.’ That was a lesson to me that I needed to let people watch this process.”

“I’m currently in the middle of my second round of chemotherapy treatment. They feel like they got it with surgery, and now they’re sort of ‘washing’ my microscopic cells and stuff (with the chemo),” he says his cancer.

“But it’s been one hell of a journey,” says Tesh. “I will be on tour, then stop in a city and have a chemo treat-ment - and then I’m down for a few days being very sick – as many who have been through this know. But it’s also a testimony of how to figure out what’s important in your life.”

Tesh has also learned through per-sonal experience that, no matter how lousy he feels after treatment, there are some cancer patients, especially children, who are in much worse shape.

“I think I have more empathy now than I’ve ever had in my life,” he says, sounding reflective. “I’ve met a lot of people with cancer, some as young as 6, who are 10 times worse than what I have. I have a head cold compared to some of these kids.”

After more than three decades as an international entertainer, John Tesh’s recording and live concert ca-reer continues to thrive today – even as he processes and battles his can-cer journey – inspiring millions along the way.

funding for our program, the San Diego Salvation Army ARC is funded entirely by donated goods resold in our 7 fam-ily (thrift) stores located throughout the county. Our stores, not only provide a thrifty shopping experience for families struggling to make ends meet, but our stores are also known for quality, af-fordability and great deals on home decor, furniture, clothing and vintage or hard to find items.

Our Downtown center extends over

The Salvation Army - far more than kettles

and thrift stores.Alcohol and drug addiction is ravaging families like

never before. The Salvation Army is part of the solution.

SOBERING FACT One in ten adults suffer from alcohol-

ism and/or drug abuse. For every per-son afflicted with drug or alcohol addic-tion, at least six others are affected.

SALVATION ARMY FACTS The Salvation Army’s ARC’s are one

of the largest networks of NO-COST rehabilitation programs in the United States. San Diego is only one in the nationwide network of 150+ such Adult Rehabilitation Centers.

Just to give you a glimpse into the scope of the operation, the San Diego ARC provides 12,000 meals a month to our program participants: 3 meals a day, 30 days a month, 130 participants.

INTERESTING TRIVIA The phrase “on the wagon” was coined by men and women receiving the services of The Salvation Army. Former national commander Evangeline Booth (found-er William Booth’s daughter) drove a hay wagon through the streets of New York to encourage alcoholics on board for a ride back to The Salvation Army. Hence, alcoholics and recovery were said to be on the wagon.

City of La Mesa Rides4Neighbors

Explore your beautiful city and meet new people while

you’re at it! The City of La Mesa offers transportation options for most of the elderly and/or disabled residents of East County called Rides4Neighbors. The residents are driven to doctor appointments,

grocery shopping, educational classes, exercise facilities, etc. This program only exits due to the contributions of trusted volunteer drivers. Rides4Neighbors (R4N) is grant funded and donation based. Volunteer drivers are reimbursed for their mileage and time. Most drivers are retired themselves and want to give back to their community. Through this program friendships are made, lives are saved, and a sense of purpose can be earned. Drivers are always needed and appreciated. The steps to become a volunteer are as easy! First you must possess an open heart and committed attitude; Second, go ahead and apply; Last get a DMV background check and Livescan fingerprinting paid for by the City of La Mesa. Call 619-667-1321 for more information. People wishing to receive services through R4N may also call to inquire.
