SUMMER 2019 PRIDE BAND NEWSLETTER Dear PRIDE Bandsmen, I hope this newsletter finds you doing well and enjoying a restful summer. The staff and I have been working very hard this summer to help make 2019 the best PRIDE Band season yet. As the title of this newsletter suggests, 2019 is going to be a BIG year. I am proud to announce that we have been selected to perform at Bands Of America Grand Nationals on Saturday, November 16 in Indianapolis. There is no bigger stage for our activity than this! We will be sharing additional details about this trip as the season unfolds. You can find our tentative season schedule later in this newsletter. I would like to extend a special welcome to all of our new members. You are now part of one of the greatest college marching bands in the country. The level of pride that our members display on a daily basis is truly inspiring and it serves as my motivation to continually raise the bar both for the PRIDE, and for me as an individual. Our incredible team of student leaders stands ready to welcome you to this incredible chapter of your life. It is the commitment of all faculty, staff, and student leaders to see you succeed as not only a member of our band program, but also as a new student here at Missouri State. For all members, please take a moment to thoroughly read through the contents of this newsletter. While much of the information is the same as previous years, some changes have been made. In addition to this newsletter, every member will receive an email with a link to their section’s music. These links will be updated throughout the summer as music is added, so please check weekly for any updates. Sound files will also be sent out to section leaders and they will share them with their sections. It is my expectation that every mem- ber of the band will arrive to the first day of band camp in good playing shape and with as much music already prepared as possible. Finally, please print off the last three pages of this newsletter and bring with you to camp check-in. This will speed up the check-in process. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or email for clarification. Bear Up!!! CAMP TIPS & REHEARSAL ATTIRE1. Pack camp clothes separate from the clothes and belongings you bring for fall.2. Bring comfortable clothes for rehearsals (shorts, t-shirts, etc.) and plan to protect yourself from the hot sun. Ball caps, visors, sunscreen, sunglasses, water bottles are a must.3. Tennis shoes are to be worn at all times. Flip-flops, sandals, dress shoes, boots, bare feet, etc. will not be allowed at any time during marching rehearsal.4. Arrive at camp READY TO PLAY! Be sure to practice daily the week prior to your arrival to camp. You must be in good physical condition for camp and have your “chops” up, or you will experience a great deal of discomfort throughout camp.5. A full tank-top or full t-shirt is acceptable for rehearsals. Sports bras, bikini tops, tube tops, etc. are not considered appropriate.6. The cut of pants/shorts should be high in the waist. The length of shorts should be appropriate and conducive to physical activity.

PLANNING YOUR FINANCES1. You will be billed by the University for the Band Camp / Travel Assessment in the amount of $ 450. This one-time figure pays for: * warm weather uniform (t-shirt / shorts / ball cap / marching shoes / polo) * uniform maintenance and repair * some meals during camp * end-of-season banquet * travel * instrument / equipment usage fee2. Color Guard members will be billed an additional $150 to cover the cost of the fall costume.3. Drumline (battery and front ensemble) will be billed an additional $50 to help cover the cost of practice and performance mallets, sticks and head replacements.4. There is a $35 equipment fee per semester for all University equipment. This amount is already covered in your camp / travel assessment for fall marching band. Students are responsible for the proper care and maintenance of all school equipment and/or clothing checked out to their care. Damages incurred or replacement cost will be charged to the student. Lockers may be rented in Wehr Band Hall for $20 per semester. It is strongly encouraged that all university-owned instruments be kept in lockers.

FROM THE DRUM MAJORS...Hello Returning Vets and Rookies!,

The 2019 PRIDE Band season is quickly approaching, and we’re so excited to get started!

Whether you are a returning member or a rookie this season with the PRIDE, know that you are part of its legacy. The PRIDE Band is the largest, most visible student organization on campus and has been recognized across the country for its high quality of performance. As a new member, you will be welcomed into our organization and will finish band camp with a family of 300+ members. You will be immersed into the traditions and culture of the PRIDE Band that make it unlike any other. Every member has a place in our band, and together we will accomplish great things!

We hope you have a great rest of the summer and that you are looking forward to the season ahead! If you have any questions or concerns before the season begins, don’t hesitate to reach out to your section leaders or us. We can’t wait to see you in August! Your Drum Majors, Zackary Hoar, Rayanne Daniel, Alex Babel

MAKE THIS YOUR BEST YEAR EVER!When students enter college they tend to believe that everyone graduates, but more often than not it takes more than four years and many individuals do not complete a degree program. College is serious business but it is worth the effort. So, prepare yourself for success by doing the following:

• Set appropriate goals.• Balance your class load - - 12-15 hours is a full load.• Wait to join a fraternity or sorority until you’ve become acclimated to college life.• Limit or eliminate employment obligations.• Make healthy choices - take care of yourself.• Don’t drink! Alcohol robs you of your initiative and is harmful to your health.• Sleep 8 hours each night (staying up too late takes a toll).• GO TO CLASS! Regular attendance pays off. Make friends with classmates.• Keep up with homework! Don’t procrastinate.• Expect to study. Grades follow you forever.• Practice! Daily practice will move you ahead musically.• Communication is key. Don’t hesitate to meet with the instructor.• Keep track of your obligations - - performances, exams, class projects, etc.• Live on a budget. Debt accumulates quickly when you are on your own.• Remember: SCHOOL COMES FIRST! This is the time to educate yourself for a brilliant career.• Be positive. Positive people live longer, feel better and are more pleasant to be around.• Be a responsible adult. Honor the commitments you have taken on.• Embrace a strong work ethic.• Demand self-discipline of yourself. Only you will know your “true self.” You make your own decisions. Be someone you can be proud of. WORK AT IT!• Nurture a foundation of faith. Students often starve themselves spiritually during their college years. A strong faith base will serve you well in the college community and throughout your life.• Live a “life of promise” on campus to assure a good life after graduation.
