Summer Adult Classes beyond Drawing Fundamentals The Practice of Art: Nourishing the Artist Within (Casas Adobes Congregational Church) Pat Dolan Four Monday evenings, 5 - 8 pm June 27, July 25, August 22, September 19 This class is about the practice of art and how to stay in this practice. You want to make art and sometimes you find it difficult to move forward. There is neener-natter going on in your head: ”not enough time,” “don’t know whan to paint,” “it’s all been done before,” “maybe I’m not really an artist” etc. Learn how to deal with your inner critic, invent art projects, and employ tools to keep you going. Bring joy back into this crazy process of making art. Through a series of exercises, you will learn how to handle the ups and downs of the creative journey. Fee: $150 (Associates $130) Drawing Traditional Sumi-e/Ink Brush (Casas Adobes Congregational Church) Joy Mills Two Tuesday afternoons, 1 – 4 pm 1 June 14 and 28 2 July 12 and 26 3 August 9 and 23 This class offers a step-by-step approach to traditional Japanese Sumi-e painting with a twist – Southwest subject matter. Each class focuses on one subject. Basic strokes will be demonstrated and practiced during each monthly set of two classes. The fluidity of brushstroke developed in this class can inform and enhance many different drawing and painting practices. Fee: $90 (Associates $75) each monthly section Figure Drawing with the Brush (TDS) Andrew Rush One Saturday, 10am – 4pm June 18 Every drawing tool or medium has a built-in way of teaching you to look at things in the spirit of what the tool does naturally. For example, pencil produces a more analytic eye, while charcoal makes one more aware of light and form. As a drawer, I use the Japanese brush to direct my attention toward the kinetic energy that flows from my subject. We will work from the model for the whole day, drawing with the brush. I will demonstrate and show examples, but mostly I will work with each person individually as we engage in gesture drawing and more sustained studies. Fee: $105 (Associates $95), includes model fees MANDALA Workshop (Junior League) Pat Dolan One Wednesday afternoon, 1 -4 pm July 20

When the paper is opened out again, the image appears on each side, transformed into a triptych piece of art or two pieces of art when separated. The outcome is always a surprise, which is what is so much fun about this process. I will also show you ways to modify the results of your work. Fee: $65 (Associates $55), includes most materials Foam Prints Terry (Mary Theresa) Dietz One Tuesday morning, 9 am – noon August 30 We will create prints from sheets of foam (polystyrene). You can also impress anything, such as coins, buttons, string, ends of pens, stamps, etc.
