Founded in November 1939 by Dr Stanley Vann, the Royal Leamington Spa Bach Choir (RLSBC) recently celebrated its 75th anniversary. Stanley Vann, whose long and successful career as a choral conductor and composer continued through to his death in 2010, con-ducted the choir’s first concert, a performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion, in the spring of 1940. In March 2000, the RLSBC celebrated its Diamond Jubilee with a triumphant concert that included one of the great English choral works, A Sea Symphony, composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams, who was appointed the first Patron and President of the Choir in 1940.

Dr Vann has been succeeded by a distinguished array of musical directors. In recent years, under the batons of Malcolm Goldring and Janet Lincé, and now under the leadership of the current musical director and conductor, Nigel Stark, the Choir has continued to expand its repertoire with a variety of well-known and lesser known works, ranging from the classi-cal, baroque and romantic periods to music of the twentieth century. These have included compositions by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Britten, Cherubini, Chilcott, Duruflé, Dvořak, Elgar, Fauré, Handel, Haydn, Holst, Janacek, Kodaly, Lauridsen, Mendelssohn, Monteverdi, Mozart, Orff, Rachmaninov, Rossini, Rutter, Tippett, Vaughan Williams, Verdi and Walton.

The Choir has benefited from working with a number of different local orchestras, and we have a long and happy relationship with the Beauchamp Sinfonietta, our musical partners in tonight’s concert. We enjoy working with a range of young soloists, drawn locally from the Birmingham Conservatoire or from further afield, and in 2007, a highlight for us was to share a stage with the world-famous opera star Sir John Tomlinson, in a charity concert in Royal Leamington Spa.

The Choir usually performs four concerts a year at a variety of venues in and around Leam-ington Spa, but concerts have also been staged in Tewkesbury Abbey, Southwell Minster, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Gloucester Cathedral, Douai Abbey, Portsmouth Guildhall, and Peterborough Cathedral. The Choir has also performed abroad in Bruges, Ghent and Paris.

The Choir aims to give performances of a high musical standard, but we also believe that music-making should be fun and a good way to make new friends. New members are al-ways welcome.

Royal Leamington Spa Bach Choir

Nigel Stark, our Director of Music, has unfortunately not been well this term, and so is unable to conduct tonight’s concert. We are immensely grateful to Colin Druce, not only for agreeing to conduct the concert in Nigel’s place, but also for all his hard work in rehearsing the choir in preparation for the concert. We wish Nigel a speedy recovery, and look forward to welcoming him back next term.

Colin Druce | ConductorColin Druce won the BMI Organ Competition and the Ludlow Philharmonic Concerto Competition while studying at the Bir-mingham Conservatoire, and gained the Associate of the Royal School of Music diploma (A.R.C.M.) and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Organists diploma (F.R.C.O.) whilst studying there. Colin had a successful career in Church music before becoming freelance in 1998, and he still plays regularly at Cov-entry Cathedral, the Collegiate Church of St Mary, Warwick and Holy Trinity Stratford. Colin has twice acted as organist for the In-ternational Church Choir Festival at Coventry Cathedral, working with Sir David Willcocks.

Colin gives recitals and concerto performances at venues throughout the country and is also committed to the duo Tuba Magna (trumpet and organ). He has performed at numerous music festivals, at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and at concerts in Budapest and the Czech Republic, and has given recitals at many of the country’s cathedrals, including Liverpool Cathedral and St Paul’s Cathedral. He has broadcast frequently for radio and television from venues that include Bristol, Man-chester, Chipping Campden, Warwick and Coventry.

Colin is much in demand as an accompanist for graded exam-inations and professional diplomas for singers and instrumen-talists, and he regularly accompanies Choral Societies across the Midlands. He has a large private teaching practice, and also teaches at the Kings High School in Warwick. He has also worked as an international adjudicator for the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, the largest music festival in the world with over 130,000 entries.

Lesley-Jane Rogers| SopranoLesley-Jane Rogers is heralded as one of the most versatile solo-ists of today, and is renowned for her captivating and evocative performances.  An established concert soloist, she specialises in oratorio, “vocal concertos”, solo cantatas, recitals and con-temporary music, and has a vast repertoire of several hundred works.  She studied singing and piano at the Royal Academy of Music where she won several prizes, and in 2003 was made an ‘Associate’ in recognition of her eminence in the profession.

Her extensive oratorio repertoire encompasses the mainstream

Her extensive oratorio repertoire encompasses the mainstream panoply – she frequently performs works by Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Elgar and Verdi – as well as many more unusual pieces.  An exuberant performer when required, she is also a natural choice for new works, and for large-scale pieces such as the Verdi Requiem or Vaughan Williams’s Sea Symphony.

Lesley-Jane has worked with many leading conductors and orchestras, and her discography numbers some 30+ CDs, including several new-music releases for the specialist label Metier, as well as various English composer CDs for the Divine Art, Toccata Classics, Campion/Cameo, Hyperion and Prima Facie labels.  A keen exponent of contemporary music, Lesley-Jane has given more than 80 premières, and is honoured to be the dedicatee of various songs and song cycles.  Large-scale premières include Joseph Phibbs’ Tenebrae, and Michael Finnissy’s Favourite Poets, but it is perhaps for her numerous chamber music recitals that she is best known.

Lesley-Jane is also in demand as a ‘vocal concerto’ soloist; in particular, her affinity with Strauss's Four Last Songs, Ravel's Shéhérazade, Finzi's Dies Natalis, Canteloube’s Songs of the Auvergne, Mozart’s Exsultate, jubilate and Bach’s Jauchzet Gott makes her a popular choice for this task.  She is also an engaging recitalist and works with the award-winning young pianist Jennie-Helen Moston, with whom she has recently released a CD of songs and anthems by British composer Peter Lea-Cox.

Bob Chilcott (b. 1955)Nidaros Jazz Mass for mixed voices

Originating from Plymouth and now based in Oxford, Bob Chilcott sang in the choir of King’s Col-lege, Cambridge, both as a boy treble and later as a tenor whilst a university student. In 1985 he joined the King’s Singers, and sang with them for twelve years. He became a composer in 1997. His musical style is light in touch, faultless in its craftsmanship and completely approachable, while avoiding the syrupy tendencies of some of his contemporaries in similar genres. Our choir benefitted from Bob Chilcott’s guidance at our inspiring weekend workshop held in 2011, attracting singers from all over the country.

During his time with the King’s Singers, Bob Chilcott was influenced by a number of prominent com-posers who had an impact on his style. He worked with George Shearing, Richard Rodney Bennett and John Dankworth. Tonight’s mass was composed shortly after George Shearing died in 2011.

Bob Chilcott’s Nidaros Jazz Mass, like Will Todd’s Mass in Blue, combines the Latin mass with the jazz idiom. It was originally composed for the upper voices of its dedicatees, Anita Brevik and the Nidaros Cathedral Girls’ Choir. The mixed voice version appeared later.

Nidaros Cathedral is located in the city of Trondheim, Norway. As the northernmost mediaeval ca-thedral in the world, it was removed from Roman control by the Lutheran Church of Norway in 1537. Saint Olav, the 11th century King of Norway, is buried beneath the church. He became the patron saint of the Norwegian nation.

The publishers use a number of terms to describe each movement and these suggest the mood of each: ï Kyrie = gentle ï Gloria = funky ï Sanctus = ballad-like ï Benedictus = laid-back ï Agnus Dei = passionate The Nidaros Jazz mass = groovy and soulful

Will Todd (b. 1970)Mass in Blue for soprano, choir and jazz ensemble

societies such as our own, as well as children’s groups, rock choirs, and faith choirs. For him, music reflects group feeling and togetherness, and he believes that contemporary composers have a responsibility to contribute to live performance for a wide audience, rather than to the exclusivity of certain contemporary music circles. His wide ranging and melodic work includes large scale and intimate choral works, opera music theatre and orchestral pieces. There are also jazz compositions such as tonight’s work, and cham-ber works. Among his arrangements of hymns is his version of Amazing Grace, which was featured in the 2012 inauguration service of President Barack Obama.

Will Todd spends much of his leisure time improvising on the piano and playing jazz with friends. With this in mind, David Temple, conductor of the Hertfordshire Chorus who had already commis-sioned a work from him, suggested a mass in the jazz idiom. The Jazz Mass of 2003 was premiered in Cambridge, with the composer at the piano and his wife Bethany as soprano soloist. It came to be called the Mass in Blue and rapidly received over one hundred performances. It blends the tradition of the sung mass, one of the oldest forms of European music, with the blues, that distinct form of African-American music which formed the foundation of jazz.

The main subject of the opening Kyrie Eleison is played by a jazz ensemble and developed throughout the work. The Gloria opens in plainsong manner, then other sections have a Latin rhythm. The Credo mixes plainsong with a 12 bar blues while the Sanctus is, as the composer says, the ‘least bluesy’ movement. The Benedictus makes use of ‘ground bass’, a form featured in the blues as well as in baroque and classical music. This is a constantly repeating line of music in the bass line, underpinning the other parts. The basses of the choir repeat their line every eight bars and this provides the ‘ground’. The Agnus Dei is quiet, but ends with an exuberant surprise which the composer seems to have been keeping up his sleeve.

Programme notes by Peter Lawley

Will Todd grew up in the city of Durham. His parents were both teachers, and his grandfather was a miner in the now abandoned coal mines of the area. His musical influences came from the local choirs, the church and the Miners’ Gala Day brass band concerts.

Todd writes music for live performance and strongly believes in the contribution to musical life made by traditional choral

Confiteor unum baptisma in remissionem peccatorum.Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum et vitam venturi saeculi. Amen.

I believe in one God, Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible,And (I believe) in one Lord, Jesus Christ, only begotten Son of the Father and born of the Father before all generations – God from God – light from light – true God from true God – begotten, not made – of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made – who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heavenand was made flesh by the Holy Spirit out of the virgin Mary, and was made man. Having been crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, he suffered and was buried and rose again on the third day according to the scriptures; and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father, and will come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.And (I believe) in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who together with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified; who has spoken through the prophets. And (I believe) in one holy catholic and apostolic church.I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I am waiting for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
