designed with a view to enable the student to have an exposure and work
experience in the field.
As a student of M.B.A., I underwent Market Research at Schools and
colleges, for a period of one month.
Here, I am submitting the report of the institutional training. A detailed
working experience that I have gained during the Market Research of eTail
Networks is presented. I have also given a brief profile of the organization to
which I have been deputed as a trainee.
Software as a teaching aid and management in Modern Scenario deals
with the Research of the usage of computers and softwares in the educational
institutions and to make a survey of how it has facilitated the teaching and
management process.
In order to make the work efficient the individual should be trained well.
Training is used as a tool for that and training differs based on curriculum and job
profile of each individual.
The Industrial training is also helpful to acquire new manipulative skills,
technical knowledge, problem solving ability, attitude they also gain some
industrial experience during the period of training.

INDUSTRY PROFILE
The US information technology (IT) industry includes about 120,000
establishments (single-location companies and branches of multi-location
companies) with combined annual revenue of about $250 billion. Major
companies include Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), Unisys, and the
technology consulting arms of IBM and Hewlett-Packard. The computer facilities
management segment of the industry is highly concentrated: the 50 largest
companies hold more than 80 percent of the market. The rest of the industry is
fragmented: the 50 largest companies hold less than half the market.
Related industries covered in separate profiles include manufacturers of
computer hardware, software, and telecommunications equipment, as well as
providers of Internet and telecommunications services.
Demand for IT services is driven by rapid technological advances, but
spending for these expensive products depends on the health of the US
economy. The profitability of companies depends on offering technical
expertise, innovative services, and effective marketing. Large companies have
advantages in broad service offerings and global reach, which give them the
ability to provide outsourcing services to big corporate customers. Small
companies can compete effectively by specializing in market niches or by
partnering with larger companies that want to broaden their mix of services.
IT companies mainly provide consulting, systems integration, data
processing, and technology outsourcing services to business customers.
Computer systems design, development, and integration services account for
about 35 percent of industry revenue; application design and development
services, 25 percent; and technical.

COMPANY PROFILE
eTail Networks Limited or ETNL is a full-service IT solutions provider that
is primarily focused at offering end-to-end innovative educational software as well
as state-of-the-art comprehensive automation solutions for instructive institutions
and corporations worldwide. In 1990, an enterprising team of engineering
professionals led by George Scaria, (ETNL's Managing Director), envisaging the
importance of inculcating computer education as well as effective language
learning facilities into the curriculum of schools and colleges, successfully
promoted them at all major educational institutions.
Although the then analog language learning labs gained in popularity and
was well-accepted in the academic community, it had its own disadvantages
such as its inability to impart learning with 100% clarity as well as monitor the
progress of students effectively.
Bonded with a vision to excel in their every endeavor and committed to
delivering best-in-class services at all times, George and his team developed a
breakthrough software ridding the conventional analog lab of all its bugs and
pioneered the concept of a fully-automated digital language laboratory or ETNL
Language Lab© in the country.
ETNL was incorporated as a public limited company in 2001 and is
headquartered at Kochi, the commercial capital of Kerala, a South Indian state,
with country-wide representation. Over the past 18 years, ETNL has evolved into
a reputed IT major in the nation and boasts a client-list that reads like a veritable
"who-is-who" of renowned educational institutions and corporations throughout
India as well as overseas and is poised to expand global operations.
12
With a highly motivated, experienced, and dedicated team of over 60
software wizards specialized in C#, ASP.NET, SQL, designing, custom software
development, application development, eBranding, etc. supported round-the-
clock by a team of hardware experts, ETNL is well-positioned to cater to not only
educational institutions and corporate offices but also the exacting demands of
multinational consortiums.
Apart from conventional software-related services such as web designing
and hosting, we also provide an array of services ranging from innovative ERP
solutions for academic institutions to providing information technology manpower
requirements as well as offering tailor-made solutions for businesses (such as
multiple platform integration) to even conducting periodic training programs and
seminars to rejuvenate and motivate company personnel.
When selecting an IT services provider, you are essentially choosing a
partner for your business. The vendor should work in harmony with your
business and have the same type of work ethic and dedication to success. There
are hundreds, if not thousands, of IT companies offering a wide range of
services. Identifying the right provider and weeding out the ones that do not
deliver on their promises can often be a challenge in itself especially since your
very business might be at stake if you make the wrong choice.
A few of the most important criteria, among others, include:
Reputation
Quality and consistency of service
Professional ethics
Best practices
Number of years in the industry
Consistency of growth
Customer support
13

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
THE MICROSOFT .NET FRAMEWORK:
The .NET Framework is the infrastructure for the Microsoft .NET platform. The .NET
Framework is an environment for building, deploying, and running Web applications and
Web Services.
The .NET Framework has two main components:
Common language
The common language runtime is the foundation of the .NET Framework.
.NET Framework class library
The .NET Framework class library is a collection of reusable types that tightly
integrate with the common language runtime. The class library is object oriented,
providing types from which your own managed code can derive functionality. In addition,
third-party components can integrate seamlessly with classes in the .NET Framework.
Tier Architecture concept:
Client-Server architecture is 2-Tier architecture because the client does not
distinguish between Presentation layer and business layer.
Layered architectures are essentially objects and work in object-oriented
environments, such as ASP.NET. ASP.NET supports layered architecture.
In software engineering, multi-tier architecture (often referred to as n-tier
architecture) is a client-server architecture in which, the presentation, the application
processing and the data management are logically separate processes The most
widespread use of "multi-tier architecture" refers to three-tier architecture.
The concepts of layer and tier are often used interchangeably. A layer is a logical
structuring mechanism for the elements that make up the software solution, while a tier
is a physical structuring mechanism for the system infrastructure.
16
Three-tier Architecture
Three-tier architecture introduces a server (or an "agent") between the client and
the server. 'Three-tier' is a client-server architecture in which the users interface,
functional process logic ("business rules"), computer data storage and data access are
developed and maintained as independent modules, most often on separate platforms.
The three-tier model is considered to be software architecture and a software
design pattern.
The 3-Tier architecture has the following three tiers:
Presentation Tier
This is the topmost level of the application. The presentation tier displays
information related to such services as browsing merchandise, purchasing, and
shopping cart contents. It communicates with other tiers by outputting results to the
browser/client tier and all other tiers in the network.
Application Tier (Business Logic/Logic Tier)
The logic tier is pulled out from the presentation tier and, as its own layer, it
controls an application’s functionality by performing detailed processing.
This tier consists of Database Servers. Here information is stored and retrieved.
This tier keeps data neutral and independent from application servers or business logic.
Giving data its own tier also improves scalability and performance.
The data layer’s responsibility is to communicate with the backend structure,
such as a database. The business layer is responsible for validating the business rules
of the component, and communicating with the data layer.
17
The business and data layer retrieve or update the data in a database for an
ASP.NET application.
A special type of client/server architecture consisting of three well-defined and
separate processes, each running on a different platform:
The user interface, which runs on the user's computer (the client).
The functional modules that actually process data. This middle tier runs on a
server and is often called the application server.
A database management system (DBMS) that stores the data required by the
middle tier. This tier runs on a second server called the database server.
The three-tier design has many advantages over traditional two-tier or single-tier
designs, the chief ones being:
The added modularity makes it easier to modify or replace one tier without
affecting the other tiers.
Separating the application functions from the database functions makes it easier
to implement load balancing.
These are some of the advantages of three-tier architecture:
It is easier to modify or replace any tier without affecting the other tiers.
Separating the application and database functionality means better load
balancing.
Adequate security policies can be enforced within the server tiers without
hindering the clients.
18
C# :
C# (pronounced C Sharp) is a multi-paradigm programming language that
encompasses functional, imperative, generic, object-oriented (class-based), and
component-oriented programming disciplines and was developed by Microsoft.
C# is one of the 44 programming languages supported by the .NET Framework’s
Common Language Runtime. The most recent version of the language is 3.0 which was
released in conjunction with the.NET Framework 3.5.
C# uses delegates - type-safe method pointers. These are used to implement
event-handling. Although it has some elements derived from Visual Basic and Java. C+
+ is C#’s closest relative. A striking change from C++ to C# is that, it does not require
header files. All code is written inline. The .NET runtime in which C# runs performs
memory management takes care of tasks like garbage collection. Because of this, the
use of pointers in C# is much less important than in C++.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM:
We focus on identifying high-quality, challenging internships and carefully
selecting the most eligible candidates for SIP so as to short-list candidates for any
suitable entry-level positions available within the business.
SIP aims to widen the student's perspective by providing an exposure to real life
organizational and environmental situations. This program gives students an insight into
how a seemingly foolproof management theory is effectively put into practice in a real-
life situation.
Typically, projects are interdisciplinary and involve assigning independent
responsibility to the summer interns, under the guidance of experts. Often, the project
assignment is confidential and proprietary in nature and reflective of the confidence
imposed in an intern by ETNL.
Projects are often assigned with a focus on strategy formulation, business
process reengineering, MIS, ERP implementation, retail, analysis, HR as well as new
product launches, sales & distribution, market research and advertising. SIP is of course
finalized and awarded only on the basis of our interview assessment of the candidate's
inherent potential and motivating factors driving him or her to take up SIP.
Candidates will be rewarded on merit on par with industry best practices and
certificates will be issued at successful completion of the SIP. Additionally, star
performers will be honored with medals and citations and offered an opportunity to join
the ETNL team at handsome salaries and perks.
20
PRODUCTS THEY OFFER TO EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS:
1. LANGUAGE LAB:
What is a Language Lab?
A Digital Language Lab is a language learning solution with a specially equipped
facility designed to train students in any language (usually one foreign to the mother
tongue) using proven language teaching techniques.
The teacher delivers the methodology through an automated system that is
adaptable to teaching a novice or a neophyte as well as brush-up the skills of a not-
very-fluent speaker to not only speak it phonetically correct in a native accent but also
learn it quickly and deliver it with clarity and confidence.
ETNL Language Lab© -- Version-3

the mouse -- share course materials and work in unison to enhance language
proficiency.
2. SCHOOL/ COLLEGE AUTOMATION:
The Campus Management System, designed to promote digital institution
administration is unique and comprehensive software suitable for any university.
Its host of features allows a user to maintain academic history of students with
complete transparency in records and provides a medium for teachers, staff and
administration to work in harmony.
21
3. DIGITAL LIBRARY:
A digital library is a library in which collections are stored in various digital formats
and this information can be accessed by computers. The digital content may be stored
locally, or accessed remotely via computer networks. A digital library is a type of
information retrieval system.Digital library is provided with a search interface which
allows resources to be found.
ADVANTAGES
The advantages of digital libraries as a means of easily and rapidly accessing books,
archives and images of various types are now widely recognized by commercial
interests and public bodies alike.
Traditional libraries are limited by storage space; digital libraries have the potential to
store much more information, simply because digital information requires very little
physical space to contain it. As such, the cost of maintaining a digital library is much
lower than that of a traditional library.
A traditional library must spend large sums of money paying for staff, book
maintenance, rent, and additional books. Digita l libraries do away with these fees. Both
types of library require cataloguing input to allow users to locate and retrieve material.
Digital libraries may be more willing to adopt innovations in technology providing users
with improvements in electronic and audio book technology .Convetional libraries may
consider that providing online access to their OPAC catalogue is sufficient. An important
advantage to digital conversion is increased accessibility to users. There in also
availability to individuals who may not be traditional patrons of a library, due to
geographic location or organizational affiliation.
22
QUALITY ASSURANCE
In the context of software engineering, software quality measures the quality of
design or how well software is designed, and quality of conformance or how well the
software conforms to that design. While quality of conformance is concerned with
implementation, quality of design measures how valid the design and requirements are
in creating a worthwhile product.
According to the American National Aeronautics and Space Administration or
NASA, (perhaps the world's most quality-conscious organizations), Software Quality
Assurance or SQA is defined as a planned and systematic approach to the evaluation of
the quality of and adherence to software product standards, processes, and procedures.
SQA includes the process of assuring that standards and procedures are established
and are followed throughout the software acquisition life cycle.
At ETNL, quality control is paramount and is an integral part of software
development process. Our team has adopted the best-practices in SQA as stipulated to
by NASA in letter and spirit right from incorporation, regardless of the stature of the
client. In today's dynamically evolving global village, quality of product/service is
perhaps the most important trait that wins a company an undisputed edge over
competition -- and over the years, ETNL has built up a rock-solid reputation as a
hallmark for quality not only amongst our clientele but also industry peers.
23
ETNL Methodology
A software development methodology is the framework that is used to structure, plan,
and control the process of developing an information system. The framework of a
software development methodology encompasses a software development philosophy,
with the approach or approaches of the software development process and multiple
tools, models and methods, to assist the developmental process.
Although a wide variety of such frameworks have evolved over the years, a particular
system development methodology is not necessarily suitable for use by all projects.
For instance, software developed using general procedural frameworks are often
embedded with additional features unnecessary to the client's needs. In such cases, the
money and efforts utilized in developing such software products are wasted and such
solutions often yield unsavory results
At ETNL, with our proven expertise in the field of custom software development, we
develop IT solutions on customized methodologies (adhering to industry best practice
norms), tailored to specific client-requirement based on various technical,
organizational, project as well as team considerations so as to deliver comprehensive
and effective solutions that are not only user-friendly but also offer value additions that
are cost-effective.
In a nutshell, at ETNL, the general workflow is as follows:
+ Identify client requirement
+ Crystal-clear ETNL team assignments
+ Accurately estimate work & duration
+ Obtain client approval
+ Software development using the appropriate methodology
+ Deliver solutions on-time
+ Impart hands-on training to client for effective implementation from day-one
+ Provide 24/7 customer-care

25
Objective of the project
Primary objective
The primary objective of filed survey during the project was to find out whether softwares serve as a teaching aid and management in modern scenario.
Find out in how many institutes softwares are used as a teaching and managrment aid.
To find out what are the approaches of the institutes towards using computer softwares in the field of education.
Whether the institutes are aware of the use of softwares as a teaching and management aid.
To know the primary reasons of using and not using softwares in the educational institutes.
Secondary objective
To find out how many institutes are interested to install softwares.
To find out how many institutes have the affordability to install softwares.
To get the feed back from the institutes about the quality of service provided by the computer softwares who have already installed it.
To make the institutes aware of the advantages of using softwares as a teaching aid and management.
To make them aware of the company name ETNL and the software products it offers and how these products will help them in the promotion of their institutes.
26
KEY FINDINGS:
1. Due to admission time the response I get during the survey is very less.
2. The Head of the Institution doesn’t look into these things while others need
the permission from their side.
3. The Private institutes (both schools and colleges) in Kolkata are all clustered
around the southern and greater part of the city whereas my work area was
north Kolkata and Howrah.
4. Eventhough there are private schools, the computers are mainly used for
computer education purpose and not for general teaching purpose.
5. There may be a single computer used for the official/clerical purpose of the
institutions.
6. The degree colleges require computers ony for the partial fulfillment of the
academic curriculam in their institutions.
7. The majority of the educational institutes are Govt sponsored and theh hardly
have affordability of installing those.
8. Some institutes which I visited never let me go in as they think am a
marketing executive.
9. In many instituions they are sending us back to come by tommorrow or day
after tommorrow or sometimes next week as they are busy. At this kind of
situation we need to go to the same place again and again.
10.As of all the usage of computers and softwares in educational institutes of
North Kolkata and Howrah are very low. Moreover they aren't aware of such
softwares and are not ready to afford except few.
27
Research Methodology
Methodology means the way or manner by which the study is accomplished, which
refers to the full outcome of the process at a glance. It includes some chronological
steps that are necessary to complete the study successfully. Mode of operation differs
with the nature of the study. Methodology is always a compromise between options and
choices and is frequently determined by the availability of relevant resource and time. It
is very important in the sense that it gives one an idea about how the study has been
conducted. In other words, methodology helps to organize, represent, and analyze data
and information. And their logical expression in a systematical chronology is to achieve
the ultimate goal of the thesis. The methodology is adopted for the current research
work is presented in a sequential manner.
Research design
Sampling technique and sample size selection
Data collection
Data processing, analysis and presentation
Limitation
Research design
Research design is important primarily because of the increased complexity in the
market as well as marketing approaches available to the researchers. In fact, it is the
key to the evolution of successful marketing strategies and programmers. It is an
important tool to study buyer’s behavior, consumption pattern, brand loyalty, and focus
market changes. A research design specifies the methods and procedures for
conducting a particular study. According to Kerlinger, “Research Design is a plan,
conceptual structure, and strategy of investigation conceived as to obtain answers to
research questions and to control variance.
28
Type of research is:
Descriptive Research
The type of research adopted for study is descriptive. Descriptive studies are
undertaken in many circumstances when the researcher is interested to know the
characteristic of certain group. A descriptive study may be necessary in cases when a
researcher is interested in knowing the proportion of people in a given population who
have in particular manner, making projections of a certain thing, or determining the
relationship between two or more variables. The objective of such study is to answer the
“who, what, when, where and how” of the subject under investigation. There is a general
feeling that descriptive studies are factual and very simple. This is not necessarily true.
Descriptive study can be complex, demanding a high degree of scientific skill on part of
the researcher.
Descriptive studies are well structured. An exploratory study needs to be flexible in its
approach, but a descriptive study in contrast tends to be rigid and its approach cannot
be changed every now and then. It is therefore necessary, the researcher give sufficient
thought to framing research.
Sampling technique and sample size selection
In this study Deliberate or Purposive sampling technique was used to get the most
effective result.
Deliberate sampling: Deliberate sampling is also known as purposive or non-probability
Sampling. This sampling method involves purposive or deliberate selection of particular
units of the universe for constituting a sample which represents the universe. When
population elements are selected for inclusion in the sample based on the ease of
access, it can be called convenience sampling. This study considers 125 samples.
29
Data collection:
One hundred twenty-five institutes in the study area have been considered for collecting
data. Necessary data has been collected through Questionnaire survey. Two types of
data have been collected for this study which are briefly discussed below:
Primary data:
Primary data for this study has been collected from main survey instruments i.e.
Questionnaire.
Questionnaire:
In common parlance questionnaire is an instrument or a list of questions that are directly
or indirectly related with the study. According to the objectives and requirements of the
study a questionnaire has been framed to collect the required information regarding all
indicators used and other relevant information.
Secondary data:
In any study secondary data plays a crucial role from the inception to destination which
on the one hand strengthens knowledge base and saves time and resources on the
other. At the initial stage it gives first hand information about the topic of the study and
later it is used to supplement the empirical data. Secondary data have been collected
for this study from different published and unpublished documents such as research
reports, different institutions, journals, articles and internet.
30
Limitations of the study
Sincere efforts have been made to collect authentic and reliable information from
respondent institutes, however the report is subject to following limitations:
i. Some respondents were reluctant to give the information, so their responses may be
biased.
ii. Time could be a major limitation as it may have affected the inferences drawn in the
study.
iii. Sample may or may not be the true representative of the universe.
iv. Study was conducted in North Kolkata And Howrah district only. So the results of the
study may not be applicable in other areas.
31
Data processing, analysis and presentation
In order to analyze, processing of raw data is very much significant. In this stage, mainly
data is being processed and analyzed for the study. Without processing raw data, it is
hard to analyze the raw data. After processing, it is needed to present data for analysis
in an appropriate way. An attempt has been taken to entry the data into different
statistical computer software with a view to analyze data to reach in a decision. All the
collected data (primary and secondary) have been processed and analyzed
chronologically. The findings have been presented in this report appropriately with the
help of figures and tables.
32
Analysis and Presentation
Q: Do you have any website of your institution? (a) Yes (b) No
INFERENCE
1. Most of the institutes have no websites of their own
2. Some private schools and degree colleges have their own websites
3. Degree colleges have launched their websites mostly for online admission

RECOMMENDATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
1. The company is needed to be physically present here to market its products in
Kolkata and its surroundings.
2. It should take some measures to make awareness about the use of soft wares in
education.
3. The company should make proper environmental scanning regarding its
competitors which include some big IT giants and MNCs and make strategies
according to that.
4. Company should try to create low cost products which will be affordable by most
of the educational institutes.
5. As most of the institutes haven’t introduced softwares yet, therefore there is a
scope for growth in this potential market but it requires an intensive marketing
plan taking in account all the contingencies.
47
CONCLUSION
Software as a teaching aid and management has proved itself to be an enhancer
in the process of teaching and learning. Its importance has been already felt by
the educational institutions. In the near future it wil soon become an indispensible
component of the eduction system. But there are some constraints towards the
implementation of the use of IT in education. An awareness campaign is needed
among the educational institution in this regard.During my study I have also
faced this.
As far as my experience is concerned I have tried and done my level best to the
task overcoming these situations. I hope that my study would help the company
in understanding the external environmental factors which may affect their
business and according to that they can develop their strategies. It was a great
learning experience for me.Thanks for giving me this wonderful opportunity to get
to know about the Marketing field. Thanks again.
