Inc. 2010 President’s Report Patricia Shepherd I know I am wishing my life away but I tell you, this is one little vegemite happy to see the year’s end. What with the minor irritations of multiple dog attacks, bee stings and a self inflicted scissor jab that gushed so much blood it put the local fountain to shame. This almost had me swooning and, as an out of body experience, was an interesting incident, but certainly one I could have done without. Combine these with some not so trivial family dramas – all I can say is: bring on 2011. Before welcoming in the New Year though I need to give thanks and appreciation to all our hard working executives and committee members, who form the backbone of our association. These are the people who work diligently, generally behind the scenes to accomplish all those tasks that a progressive association requires. Yolanda Waldman is retiring from our committee and I extend thanks for your contribution over the years. There comes a time in all our lives whereby we need to reassess personal, professional and voluntary commitments so our energy is redirected. Credit and recognition to Rainer Rollfink our Newsletter Editor who keeps our national membership not only up to date on current affairs but also provides us with the majority of the informative articles. The geographic distances afford us limited opportunity to meet with members personally making our communication network doubly important. I know we have some wonderful prolific and talented writers amongst our membership so make a resolution now to submit your articles in the New Year. When talking communications Tess Cullen our Web Co- ordinator also comes under this banner and a big thank you is extended to Tess for keeping our web page updated with current information. We all gain and acquire so much from astrology, whether this forms a passion or a large part of our lives. It is the people willing to stand and to be counted, who donate of their time, energy and expertise, illustrating and demonstrating for us the importance of social consciousness and commitment. I thank you one and all. (continued p.2)

President’s Report Patricia Shepherd

I know I am wishing my life away but I tell you, this is one little vegemite happy to see the year’s end.

President’s Report (continued) The steady increase of our membership is indicative of our status in the community with numbers standing at 70 full members and 1 associate member. There have been a number of associate members over the year who have now progressed to full membership. My thanks to these new members for their patience and understanding if they experienced any delays. Associate Membership is relatively new to our association and we continue to refine and improve its application. As you are all aware our 10th AGM is being held at The Women’s College, Sydney University on Sunday 30 January 2011. I hope to see many of you there. Brian and Glennys, stalwarts of our community, have planned two interactive sessions geared towards consulting for our Personal Development sessions. These will be held in the afternoon. I take this opportunity to wish members a very Merry Christmas and a New Year that fulfills all resolutions. I leave you with a few words from the past: Let there be lights in the vault of heaven to separate day from night, and let them serve as signs. (Genesis 1:14)

In reference to The Star of Bethlehem After the birth of Jesus Christ, astrologers from the east arrived in Jerusalem, asking:

‘Where is the child who is born to be king of the Jews. We observed the rising of his star, and we have come to pay him homage.’ (Matthew 2:2. New English Bible)

Take care Patricia

“From Where Comes the Hole?” Rainer Rollfink

I love metaphors. I see them as pictures of a truth that can be seen somewhere else. Not ‘as above, so below’, but ‘as here, so there’. I also love puzzles and things to challenge the mind.

This puzzle combines the two. I see it as a metaphor for life, for our lives. Sometimes we feel that things are sweet, that it’s all working. How would you describe that state? You feel as if life is in order, that things are settled, things are in their right place.

Then there are other times, when we might still have the same ‘pieces’ in our life, the same people, the same jobs, the same activities and lifestyle. But somehow it just doesn’t feel as if it’s working. There’s something wrong. There’s a hole in our life. Something is missing. This puzzle is a perfect illustration of this idea. The exact same pieces are present, but they are arranged in a different order, and it leaves a hole. The puzzle, as always, is to figure out how this hole came about, how it happened, or why there is a hole. How did the whole turn into a hole? Why is there something missing? Good luck working this out. I worked it out, and found the solution delightfully elegant, so I wanted to share this puzzle – and this metaphor. Like many puzzles in life, we all have to work out our own solution. You have to find out which arrangement restores the whole, and what creates the hole. And perhaps why. Have fun with the puzzle.

“Are People More Complicated Than Two-Dimensional Pictures?”

Rainer Rollfink

My guess is most people would answer ‘Yes’ to the above question. My next question is therefore:

If a two-dimensional picture can create an illusion of something that is not what it seems, is it easier or harder for a person to create an

illusion about themselves which is not what it seems? Let me illustrate the first part, the two-dimensional picture:

Are these lines straight, curved, parallel or sloping?

Looks like a spiral, right?

Wrong... It's a bunch of independent circles

How many colours do you see?

Answer: There are only 3, white, green and one shade of red.

If our eyes – just one of our senses – can easily be confused and bewildered, how do we help someone else make sense of their confusion and bewilderment?

What is their view of Life?

How can we help others to see straight, or to find a way to reassemble their puzzle to

make a whole?

Mirror, mirror, on the wall …

This next one reminds me of the Monty Python Confuse-a-cat sketch. Look at the chart below and say the COLOR of the word, not the word itself. Why is it so

difficult? Because the right half of your brain is trying to say the color, while the left side of your brain is trying to say the word.

Are these wheels turning? Which ones?

If you focus on one wheel it will look as if it is not turning. But your peripheral vision will see the others turning.

Is this another metaphor for life?

Every time you focus on one thing, you might be able to get it under control, but you simply cannot control everything. As soon as you take your eyes off one thing it starts to ‘get away

from you’. ‘Keep your eye on the ball.’

What’s going on in your mind while you are talking to someone? What’s going on in their mind?

Is a conversation like having a number of wheels spinning, each one capable of going off in another direction at any moment in time?

It reminds me of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now: I’ve looked at life from both sides now, from win and lose, and still somehow

it’s life’s illusions I recall – I really don’t know Life …

at all.

The dedicated work of the APA Executive Committee has made it possible for astrological practitioners with APA membership to obtain professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Members of the committee have gone through an extensive process for the acceptance of the APA. Our success has been due to the APA’s membership standards and the requirements of counselling training and supervision developed for practicing astrologers.
