by prayer, fasting and a recent confession. If you are visiting from a non-
Orthodox church or otherwise are not prepared to commune today, you are
welcome to receive some of the unconsecrated, blessed bread which the
acolytes are holding. We pray for all to be united in the Body and Blood of
Christ! If you would like to learn how you can enter into communion with

THE EPISTLE (For the Fifth Sunday after Pentecost)
How great are Thy works, O Lord! In wisdom hast Thou made them all. Bless the Lord, O my soul.
The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans. (10:1-10)
Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that it
may be saved. I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but it is
not enlightened. For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes
from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to
God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law, that everyone who
has faith may be justified. Moses writes that the man who practices the
righteousness which is based on the law shall live by it. But the
righteousness based on faith says: Do not say in your heart, “Who will
ascend into Heaven?” (that is, to bring Christ down) or “Who will
descend into the abyss?” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But
what does it say? The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart
(that is, the word of faith which we preach); because, if you confess with
your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised
Him from the dead, you will be saved. For man believes with his heart
and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved.
THE GOSPEL (For the Fifth Sunday of Matthew)
The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
(8:28-9:1) At that time, when Jesus came to the country of the Gergesenes, two
demoniacs met Him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one
could pass that way. And behold, they cried out, “What have we to do to
Thee, O Son of God? Art Thou come here to torment us before the
time?” Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from
them. And the demons begged Him, “If Thou castest us out, send us
away into the herd of swine.” And He said to them, “Go.” So they came
out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down
the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. The herdsmen
fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had
happened to the demoniacs. And behold, all the city came out to meet
Jesus; and when they saw Him, they begged Him to leave their
neighborhood. And getting into a boat He crossed over and came to His
own city.
A GOOD WORD
VITAMINS FOR THE SOUL All quotes are from Saint Basil the Great
“If every man took only what was sufficient for his needs, leaving
the rest to those in want, there would be no rich and no poor.”
“Many a man curses the rain that falls upon his head, and knows not
that it brings abundance to drive away the hunger.” – St. Basil
“When someone steals another's clothes, we call them a thief.
Should we not give the same name to one who could clothe the
naked and does not? The bread in your cupboard belongs to the
hungry; the coat unused in your closet belongs to the one who needs
it; the shoes rotting in your closet belong to the one who has no
shoes; the money which you hoard up belongs to the poor.”
“The hairsplitting difference between formed and unformed makes
no difference to us. Whoever deliberately commits abortion is
subject to the penalty for homicide.”
“All who call the Holy Ghost a creature we pity, on the ground that,
by this utterance, they are falling into the unpardonable sin of
blasphemy against Him.”
“We glorify the Holy Ghost together with the Father and the Son,
from the conviction that He is not separated from the Divine Nature;
for that which is foreign by nature does not share in the same
honors.”
“Just as a very little fresh water is blown away by a storm of wind
and dust, in like manner the good deeds, that we think we do in this
life, are overwhelmed by the multitude of evils.”
“Through the Holy Spirit comes our restoration to paradise, our
ascension into the kingdom of heaven, our return to the adoption
of sons, our liberty to call God our Father, our being made
partakers of the grace of Christ, our being called children of light,
our sharing in eternal glory, and, in a word, our being brought
into a state of all ‘fullness of blessing,’ both in this world and in
the world to come, of all the good gifts that are in store for us, by
promise hereof, through faith, beholding the reflection of their
grace as though they were already present, we await the full
enjoyment.”
“They who sow courtesy reap friendship, and they who plant
kindness gather love.”
