e The summer of 2015 is slowly coming to an end. Summer vacations are fading into memory and the kids are settling into their school routines. With
football season kicking into high gear, our lives are slowly returning to “normal.”
While our afternoons and evenings may seem to be a blur of racing to and from afterschool activities, sports practices and music lessons, let’s not forget that the fall season in Florida has plenty to offer for family fun. The sun is not quite so scorching hot, and the ocean waters are still warm and beautiful. So put down the tablet,
switch off the game console, and get out there and enjoy the soothing surf, take an airboat tour through the Everglades, or simply make time for a movie matinee.
Whatever you choose to do, do it with family and friends. Our hectic lives force us to spend time separated from loved ones for most of the day, either at work or school, so make sure you make the time to enjoy each other’s company whenever you can.
Have a fantastic fall season.
Sincerely,
Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Soccer has been a hot topic with the U.S. Women’s National Team defeating Japan this summer in Canada becoming the 2015 FIFA World Cup Champion and the first three-time FIFA Women’s World Cup winner. Similar to these
professionals, the Sunrise Sting U18 soccer team became the first girls’ team to win the first State Cup at U13 and the last at U18 in the past 20 years, showing their incredible level of consistency. The Sunrise Sting U18 team has now won three State Cups which is the most in the state for this particular age group. Only two other female teams have achieved the same this century. For the fourth consecu-tive year, Sunrise has won the most State Cups in the state. They currently have ten in this decade, again being the most in Florida, since 2010.
The Sunrise Sting U18 girls’ 22 member soccer club recently traveled to Auburndale, Florida to play in the 2015 Florida Youth Soccer Association State Cup Championship and defeated the Orlando ECLN 2-1 in overtime. This won them the State Cup once again. They also achieved a perfect 6-0 record winning the Region III Premier League Championship at the beginning of the season where they competed against other top teams in the southeast.
Many of these girls have much to focus on besides the game, as twenty of the twenty two players, are preparing for college after earning soccer scholarships. Coach Bruce Konners has worked with many of these girls since they were very young. He has seen them grow up on the field and mature into fine young adults who are ready to put their best foot forward, but this time into the next stage of their lives.
“It was a good feeling because we accomplished our mission, which was to give the girls an opportunity to play in college and get into a good school,” Konners said. “The overall reward, besides college, was the girls really got along and became best of friends for life. We’ve been one of the top teams in Florida and the girls grew as people and learned a lot of lessons. Being together so long we became a very steady team that never got too high or too low.”
Many of these girls have had fantastic high school soccer careers and have made friendships that will last a lifetime in addition to having the memories of such a significant part of their lives. Julia Jaffe has been playing soccer since she was just seven years old, and was an integral part of starting the Sunrise Sting
since its inception in 2005. Her loyalty has always been to Coach Bruce and her club team. “Coach Bruce has given us the grit and determination to succeed at anything we did on the field and whatever we will do in our future,” says Jaffe.
Sunrise may be small in comparison to other clubs, but they pride themselves on hard work, superior skills and friendly, yet competitive play. Their focus is developing technically advanced players who love playing the game with other highly skilled individuals. This underlying philosophy has proved to have successful results for individual players and the team as a whole. Many Sunrise players have earned pres-tigious awards and honors and also par-ticipate on State, Regional and National teams. The program also provides great exposure to colleges since they play in top leagues and in college showcases.
This year’s U18 team has 19 college com-mitments, including 14 destined for Division I schools and three headed to the National Champions, Florida State University. Julia Jaffe will be attending Brandeis University in Boston this fall. She chose this school not only to play soccer, but for its academ-ics as well. Jaffe states, “Sports teach that discipline, passion, and commitment are essential to achieve goals and to succeed in anything you desire.”

The City of Sunrise took part in the 32nd Annual National Night Out Celebration on Tuesday, August 4th as they hosted the event with Target as their primary sponsor. Community residents participated in this nationwide
event that has been bringing neighbors and community officers together since its inception in 1984. An estimated 30 million plus people take part in this effort to increase awareness about police programs, drug prevention, town and neighbor-hood watch and other anti-crime endeavors.
The first Tuesday in August has been designated as the official “National Night Out” across the nation in all communities. The event is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) in the United States and Canada. This is the nation’s premiere non-profit crime prevention organization dedicated to the promotion and development of crime prevention in these local communities.
NATW is a network of law enforcement agencies, neigh-borhood watch groups, civic groups, state and regional crime prevention associations and concerned citizens. Due to the ambitious collaboration of these groups, NATW was able to launch this annual National Night Out campaign which promotes police-community partnerships and neighbor-hood camaraderie to create a cohesive effort making neighborhoods safer and bet-
ter places to live. The purpose is to enhance the relationship between neighbors and community
officials by bringing back a sense of community in a time when citizens can no lon-ger leave their doors unlocked. “National Night Out” provides such an opportunity. These events are typically organized by block watches, non-profit organizations, companies and police departments. They range from simple street gatherings with BBQ and pot-luck dishes to full-blown festivals with live music, food trucks and various entertainment. Many include safety demonstrations, seminars and youth events along with the visit of local emergency personnel.
The event was a success at the Sunrise Police Department as Sunrise residents enjoyed meeting community personnel and local business vendors while listen-
ing to great music, indulging in free food and watching K-9 and SWAT demonstrations on this exciting night of commu-nity togetherness.
For more information and safety updates from the Sunrise Police Department, “like” them on Facebook at City of Sunrise Police Department and fol-low them on Twitter @SunrisePoliceFL. Please note their non-emer-gency number: 954-764-HELP (4357).

A new chapter in cancer care is here.
The Maroone Cancer Center is the first hospital-based facility in the southeastern United States to install and operate the most advanced nonsurgical technology to break down tumors. This revolutionary, noninvasive approach using external beam radiotherapy improves accuracy, safety and recovery time. Learn how our holistic approach is helping more patients survive cancer.
The latest options in prostate cancer treatment.Improvements in the effectiveness of prostate cancer treatments are changing the outlook for men diagnosed with the cancer for the better.
Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in men, and the second leading cause of cancer death among men in the United States. One in seven men is likely to be diagnosed in their lifetime; most cases are found in men over age 65.
Today’s prostate cancer treatments include surgery, radiation and drugs that slow cancer cell growth. The safety and effectiveness of these treatments are steadily improving. “Each treatment has its own benefits and risks, and choosing the right approach can be complicated,” says Barbara Ercole, MD, a urologist at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston. “Narrowing treatment options depends on several factors, which include the stage of the cancer and patient comorbidities and preferences.”
In some cases, no treatment might be the most appropriate first step. Called “active surveillance,” this strategy allows men with early-stage or very slow-growing prostate cancer to avoid treatment and its side effects. The patient’s cancer is regularly monitored so that action can be taken if the cancer grows or spreads.
Radiation therapy is a treatment option that kills cancer cells and shrinks tumors. Radiation can be produced from a machine outside the body (external radiation) or by putting materials (often referred to as radiation “seeds”) that produce radiation into the area where the cancer cells are found (internal radiation or brachytherapy).
One of the most common surgical treatments for prostate cancer is radical prostatectomy, which involves the removal of the entire prostate. This can be done through an incision in the lower abdomen (open approach), or using robot-assisted surgery. Robotic prostatectomy is a type of minimally invasive surgery that uses robotic equipment and allows surgeons to operate through small ports rather than large incisions.
“Unlike many cancers, prostate cancer usually allows the patient a significant window of time to consider their options,” says Dr. Ercole. “Make sure you understand all of the information before you and your physician agree on a course of treatment.”
For an evaluation with a Cleveland Clinic Florida prostate cancer specialist, call 855.324.8153. To learn more visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/cancercare.

Membership fee is $20 (student membership is $10) for the year which covers the entire family and includes exclusive member-only activities such as learning to use a telescope, video and slide show presentations, star parties, astronomy day, CCD imaging, observatory operations and other special projects along with a monthly newsletter. However, Saturday
night stargazing is always free to every-one until midnight.
The facility is named after Dr. Joseph Dennison Fox, a former Professor of Astronomy and History, in recogni-tion of his generosity and leadership. He brought an optical tube assembly for a 6-inch f/15 refractor
from Puerto Rico when he retired in South Florida in the late 1960s. Fox joined the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association in 1970 and later donated his infamous refractor to the club. This telescope has been updated and restored and now resides in his namesake observatory.
On a clear night, it’s possible to have as many as 15 telescopes situated around the observatory. But, it’s always encouraged to bring your own telescope if you have one. On rainy or cloudy nights the SFAAA will show astronomy based pre-sentations and videos. It’s an “out of this world” experience and many who attend continue to visit and expand their knowledge of what surrounds the universe.
The Fox Observatory is located at Markham Park, 16001 State Road 84, Sunrise. Once past the guard gate, turn left at 4-way stop and then make the first right and continue to the end of the circle. For more information about the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association contact 954-384-0442. If you arrive at the park before sunset, the park charges a $1.50 per person entrance fee. Observatory admission is free. Donations are accepted.

It’s that time of year again when the Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery is transformed into Lyrical Lounge, an intimate coffeehouse-like
setting, where local Broward County students have the opportunity to take the stage. Lyrical Lounge has been a huge success with its “Teen Open Mic Night”. Due to its increased popu-larity, the program will resume monthly. Each month, featured artists will get to perform poetry, comedy, music and more in this non-intimidating environment.
It all started with the “Word Up! Poetry Slam” competition six years ago. Chosen participants were able to attend creative writing workshops and perform their original pieces in front of an audience. As a result, it was noted that many students had the desire to have an outlet to showcase their talent, and a partnership with the Jason Taylor Foundation, the Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network, the SPEAK! collective, and the Community Foundation of Broward was created. This ambitious joint effort has atten-dance constantly growing. Students in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties are able to participate in after-school poetry programs pro-vided by these generous organizations.
“This program is changing lives; students are being transformed by the opportunity to discover things about themselves and the world through writing poetry and standing on stage and being
validated through their words,” says Darius Daughtry, Director of Poetry Programs at the Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network.
“And these young people are our future.”Piper High School graduate, Zoharian
Williams, better known as Zo, became somewhat a local celebrity with his success in the program. Winning contests such as the
“District Wide Poetry Slam”, “Lauderhill’s Got Talent”, “Louder Than A Bomb” Florida Poetry Festival and Sunrise’s own “Word Up! Poetry Slam” has made him one of the most inspiring individuals the program has had. Many other aspiring teens hope to follow in his footsteps.
Auditions for this year’s 7th annual “Word-Up Poetry Slam” will be held at the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre on September 17th. Students enrolled in Broward County high schools for the 2015-2016 academic year are invited to participate. Fifty spaces are open and pre-registration is required. Twenty poets will be selected to advance to the “Word Up!” stage on October 24th. The finalists must participate in a series of free writing and performance workshops in order to be eligible to compete. To audition for the “Word Up! Poetry Slam” download the registration form at www. sunrisefl.gov/wordup or call 954 -747-4662 for more information.
“Lyrical Lounge” Teen Open Mic Night is September 11th - 7:00-9:00pm - Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery- 10610 West Oakland Park Blvd - Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.
Talented Teens Are Encouraged To Take the Stage at Lyrical LoungeBy BeveRly PeRkins
While most children and teens spent their summer vacation at the beach, or at camp, or just hanging out with
friends, Bella Hernandez chose to spend her time at the Daniel D. Cantor Senior Center. Bella, an eleven year old, rising 6th grade honor student at Sawgrass Springs Middle School, decided volunteering is what she wanted to do on her break.
The Daniel D. Cantor Senior Center is a social, educational and recreational facility for seniors. They offer more than sixty classes weekly, plus they have adult day care and Alzheimer’s respite programs. All the activities are given in a structured and safe environ-ment. Currently, they have over one thousand members. Members have access to social workers who provide assistance with referrals, crisis intervention and every day problem solv-ing. Licensed nurses are also on staff to pro-vide health support and educational classes.
One day Bella went to work with her grand-mother, Nancy Miller, who is a registered nurse at the center. She loved helping out so much that she wanted to contribute more. Being a dancer since the age of three, and now a competitive dancer for the past 5 years, allows Bella the advantage of teaching dance to the seniors. She especially loved dancing with Alzheimer’s residents when there was live
entertainment on Shabbat. While at the center, she didn’t just dance.
She took on multiple tasks such as filing in the office and serving lunch in the dining hall. She also called bingo and assisted residents by helping them understand the game. She also taught those interested how to play Wii bowl-ing so they could enjoy today’s popular video game pastime.
Bella says, “When I left the center for the day I was very happy that I was able to help the members enjoy their day and that they went home feeling happy too.”
Members got used to having Bella around the center considering she was there at least 12 hours a week. They appreciated her com-pany as she spent time just talking and listen-ing to their stories. She enjoyed their company too since she plans on continuing her visits during the school year when she doesn’t have dance class or homework. Her future plans include attending college in an arts program so she can achieve her goal as a professional dancer.
For more information on the Daniel D. Cantor Senior Center - 5000 Nob Hill Rd., Sunrise - call 954-742-2299 or visit www.cantorcenter.com.

Summer is behind us and the 2015-2016 school year is underway. Just as children in kinder-garten through 12th grade are benefitting
from new academic challenges and enrichment opportunities, it’s important to provide babies, tod-dlers and preschoolers with opportunities for learn-ing. Research shows that high-quality early care and education play important roles in preparing children for success in school and beyond.
That’s one of the many reasons the City is excited to partner with comprehensive early-learn-ing and social service agency Family Central to implement C-QuELL – a Community of Quality
Early Learning and Literacy – in Sunrise.C-QuELL is an innovative and collaborative program designed to support
safe, nurturing, and enriching early learning environments in child care cen-ters, in the home, and in the community. It will unite a wide range of Sunrise stakeholders – including residents, businesses, faith-based organizations, the public school system, and child care centers – as partners in identifying and addressing gaps in early learning.
The C-QuELL program is made possible through a significant, multi-year grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. We’re confident this investment in effective early learning efforts will pay dividends for generations to come. To learn more about the C-Quell initiative, visit www.familycentral.org/C-QuELL.
In addition to a strengthened focus on early learning, September holds several opportunities for teen creativity. On Friday, September 11, Sunrise will host its now-monthly installment of the Lyrical Lounge Teen Open Mic Night. And on Thursday, September 17, the City will hold auditions for its seventh annual high school poetry slam, “Word Up!” Both events are the result of an ongoing partnership between Sunrise, the Jason Taylor Foundation, and the Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network, with support from the Community Foundation of Broward.
Teens from high schools across Broward County are invited to participate. Even if you don’t think you’re stage-ready, be sure to mark your calendar for the “Word Up!” finals on Saturday, October 24, at 7:00 p.m. in our Sunrise Civic Center Theatre. Details, including an audition registration packet, can be found at www.sunrisefl.gov/wordup.

A lways Ride with Traffic and Follow the Rules of the Road: ▸ You are better off riding with the flow of
traffic, not against it. Crash data tells us that get-ting hit from behind is extremely unlikely. ▸ You are more predictable and visible to motorists,
especially at intersections and driveways. ▸ Ride in a straight line, not in and out of cars, and
use hand signals when turning and stopping. ▸ Obey traffic signs, signals and lane markings,
and yield to traffic when appropriate, including pedestrians.
Don’t Ride on the Sidewalk: ▸ Although you might think it’s a safer option, motorists are simply not looking
for bicyclists on the sidewalk, especially those riding against the direction of traffic.
▸ At every driveway and intersection, you are at greater risk of being hit by a motorist than if you were riding on the road with traffic.
▸ Pedestrians will thank you for riding on the road as well. ▸ Ride on the trail, paved shoulder, bike lane, or bike route. You still need to
follow the rules of the road and watch out for your fellow travelers. Ride to the right, signal your turns, obey traffic signs and signals.
Be Predictable and Visible: ▸ Try not to be hesitant or do things that motorists and other travelers may not
be expecting. ▸ Make sure everyone can see you and knows where you are and where you
are going. ▸ If riding in the dark, use headlights, taillights, and reflectors and wear
reflective materials and brightly colored clothing. ▸ Do not wear headphones or talk on a cell phone while bicycling. Watch for Stuff on the Road or Trail that Might Make you Fall or Swerve: ▸ Rocks, trash, storm grates, wet leaves, potholes, gravel, railroad tracks,
and even wet pavement markings can all send you flying. ▸ Also watch for parked cars, doors opening, and cars pulling in and out of
driveways.Watch for Turning Traffic: ▸ Most car/bike collisions happen at intersections and driveways when
motorists or bicyclists are turning. ▸ At every intersection and driveway, keep a careful eye out for motorists turn-
ing right in front of you, you may be going faster than they think. Also, look for motorists turning left across your path, drivers are looking for gaps in traffic and may not be paying attention to anything other than other motor vehicles.
Stay safe,
Police Chief John Brooks

Take a Stand Against Falls This Month
September is Fall Prevention Awareness Month, and the National Council on Aging has revealed this year’s theme: “Take a
Stand Against Falls”. According to the Center for Disease Control
(CDC), one-in-three adults age 65 and older fall each year. These falls can result in severe injuries, such as hip fractures and traumatic brain injuries. At worst, they may even be fatal.
However, most falls are actually preventable. One of the first steps in preventing falls is to recog-nize that falling is not an inevitable part of aging, and to then adopt strategies that will make falls
less likely: ▸ Stay Active. Lack of exercise results in diminished muscle tone
and bone density, whereas physical activity can maintain and even increase strength and balance.
▸ Review your medications with your doctor, as they may have side effects and interactions that could make you dizzy and more suscep-tible to a fall.
▸ Do a home safety check to identify and correct common hazards like loose rugs, cluttered walkways, and insufficient lighting.
Certain activities and programs have been proven to reduce the inci-dence of falling in older adults. The ancient Chinese practice of Tai Chi uses slow gentle movements to strengthen the body while focusing the mind. According to Dr. Peter Wayne (research director of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School), Tai Chi has been shown to reduce falls in seniors by up to 45%. It can also improve balance in those with a neurological condition such as Parkinson’s disease, as reported in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Tai Chi classes are offered regularly at the City of Sunrise Senior Center. Call (954) 572-3670 for details.
Various fall-prevention classes have emerged that use an integrated approach to fortify older adults both physically and mentally against falls. One such program – A Matter of Balance (MOB) – is offered free of charge through the Sunrise Fire-Rescue Department and the Senior Center, in partnership with the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Broward. Adapted for lay-leader instructors from the original model used at Boston University, this eight-week program not only teaches partici-pants moderate exercises to enhance strength and balance, it also trains them to restructure negative, fearful thoughts about falling into positive and empowering beliefs. Upon completion of the MOB course, participants report a higher level of confidence in their ability to determine much of their own future health and activity level, as well as a stronger commitment to continued exercise.
Fall injuries are a main concern for us as emergency responders. We want to keep our young-at-heart residents safe by helping them become knowl-edgeable on the best ways to prevent falls.
To sign up for upcoming MOB classes, please call Sunrise Fire-Rescue at (954)746-3465. For on-going safety information,
‘Like’ us on Facebook at Sunrise Fire-Rescue and follow us on Twitter@SunriseFRD.

I Thought My Divorce Was Over!By evan BaRon
There is a saying often used in family law, which is that “if you have children, you are never divorced.” I repeat that saying
several times each week to both existing and new clients. Even after a divorce is finalized, there are still potential problems which may arise. If you have the opportunity to read a Final Judgment of Dissolution of Marriage, the Court will retain juris-diction in the matter. That is to ensure that if issues arise, the parties have the legal right to petition the court for relief. There are some issues, however, which cannot be re-litigated.
A large percentage of my practice is devoted to “post judgment matters,” such as child support, alimony, custody, visitation and parental relocation. All of the above matters can be addressed by the court if there is a failure to comply with an existing court order or if, due to a “sub-stantial change in circumstance,” one of the parties is seeking a modification.
For instance, if the primary residential parent is not receiving his/her child support, then an enforcement action can be brought. If one of the parents loses his/her job through no fault of their own, then a modification to reduce either child support or alimony can be filed. If one of the parents is not allow-ing scheduled visitation or if due to a change in circumstance the visitation schedule must be changed, a modification proceeding can be filed.
Of course, not every issue can be re-litigated. The equitable distribution of assets and debts is a matter which cannot be disturbed after the Final Judgment, unless the parties themselves reach an agreement or one of the parties can prove fraud or coercion in the original agreement. In addition, child support cannot be increased unless the party seeking an increase can show a substantial change in income which would result in an increase of at least $50.00 per month or 15% over the existing monthly payment. Of course, one can never attempt to overturn an agreement simply because he/she has changed their minds and now feels it is perhaps unfair.
I always try and tie up all lose ends when finalizing an agreement between the parties. The last thing either party wants is continued litigation, which means continued stress and continued attorney’s fees. Sometimes a matter can be resolved by the parties simply discussing the matter. I am always amazed at how often issues can be resolved by a simple phone call, letter or email. If both parties truly want what is best for their child, then a compromise should not be so difficult. Unfortunately, some parties wish to continue the litigation based upon emotional issues. This is never a good idea and, more often than not, it is the children who suffer.
