Please donate to our Strings Initiative Program (S.I.P.)

Through the collaboration between the Richmond Community Orchestra and Girls, Inc. of Wayne County, girls enrolled at Girl’s Inc. will have the oppor-tunity to explore and begin playing the violin. They will begin with a daily lesson for a period of 2 weeks, beginning with the basic techniques. Ultimate-ly, they will begin to develop the necessary techniques and repertoire to transition to long-term opportunities for musicianship. String instruments are a critical component of an orchestra – one of the things that make an orchestra unique from a band. Our community is at a potential tipping point where our long history of orchestral music and train-ing in the primary and secondary schools may fade from existence. The Rich-mond High School Orchestra was the first high school orchestra in the United States, established in approximately 1900, and it is still in existence today. However, that is the extent of the opportunities for children to participate in a school orchestra in Wayne County. All of the other school districts have eliminated their orchestras and string instrument instruction from their curriculum. The SIP will hopefully develop a passion and expertise that will be carried through to lifelong musicianship in the various orchestras in the community, including the Richmond Community Orchestra, the Earlham College Orches-tra, and the Richmond Symphony Orchestra. It is a perfect outreach program for the Richmond Community Orchestra, as it reflects the mission of our or-ganization, which is “to encourage lifelong musicianship and appreciation of orchestral music in Richmond, Indiana, and the surrounding area through regular practice and performance.”

The collaboration with Girls, Inc. of Wayne County was a natural outgrowth of an earlier outreach project were a number of musicians from the Richmond Community Orchestra allowed several of the girls to handle and attempt to play orchestral instruments. That event was very successful, and meshed with the missions of Girls, Inc. of Wayne County, which is, in part, “…to build girls’ capacity to become adults who are responsible, confident, economically independent, and personally fulfilled.”

Please make your checks payable to: Richmond Community Orchestra and note that it is for the S.I.P. in the memo section. All donations to this program are fully tax deductible
