Prayer of the DayEternal God, you sent John the Baptist to prepare the way for the coming of your Son. Grant us the wisdom to see your purpose and openness to hear your will, that we too may prepare the way for Christ who is coming in power and glory to establish his kingdom of peace and justice; through Jesus Christ our Judge and our Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever. Amen.

Prayer of ConfessionThe birth of our Lord is upon us, and we are not ready. Each of us has locked ourselves out of relationships, opportunities, and service. We are arrogant, stubborn, and obstinate. We have filled our lives and our world with darkness and death, and all too often put our own judgment above yours. We are lost, in need of light and hope and joy. Come, Lord Jesus; forgive us and restore us. Come, Lord Jesus; guide us and deliver us. Come, Lord Jesus; teach us and renew us. Come, Lord Jesus.
Silent Prayer
Assurance of ForgivenessFear not! Through the Holy Spirit we leap with joy. Our souls proclaim the greatness of the Lord. Our sins are forgiven! Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace and goodwill to all people. Christ was born for this. Christ was born for this. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you!

*Affirmation of Faith Confession of 1967 (9.07)
In Jesus Christ, God was reconciling the world to Godself. Jesus Christ is God with humankind. He is the eternal Son of the Father, who became human and lived among us to fulfill the work of reconciliation. He is present in the church by the power of the Holy Spirit to continue and complete his mission. This work of God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is the foundation of all confessional statements about God, humanity, and the world. Therefore, the church calls all people to be reconciled to God and to one another.
Offertory Veni, Veni Emmanuel Zoltán Kodály Sung in Latin
Come, come, Emmanuel, and set free captive Israel, who groans in exile, deprived of God’s Son. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall be born for you, O Israel.
Come, O Branch of Jesse. From the enemy’s claw, from the cave of hell, and from the abyss, save your people. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall be born for you, O Israel.
Come, come, O Rising One, comfort us through your arriving; the dark clouds and terrible darkness of night put to flight. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall be born for you, O Israel.
3
Come, Key of David, unlock the heavenly kingdom; make safe the way to heaven, and close the way to hell. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall be born for you, O Israel.
Come, O Lord, who to the people in Sinai gave the law from on high in glorious majesty. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall be born for you, O Israel.

Worship Reflection by Noel Werner
“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” is one of the most familiar Advent hymns in the English-speaking world, largely due to John Mason Neale’s masterful 19th-century translation. Today the Adult Choir sings a setting by the 20th-century Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodaly. This piece uses the original Latin hymn dating from the early 18th century. You may wish to compare the literal translation of the Latin in the bulletin with Neale’s (see Hymn 88).
The modern hymn “Veni, veni, Emmanuel” is in turn based on the “O Antiphons,” which may date from the early Christian church and first appear in written form in the 8th century. These seven antiphons were sung on the seven final days of Advent. Mark Loria’s postlude improvisation today centers on the plainchant melody of the fourth antiphon, “O Key of David – controlling at your will the gate of heaven.” Mark’s improvisations are part of a suite entitled “In Thy Dwelling Place” and form a wordless contemplation on the mystery of the Incarnation.

It’s a Wonderful Life9:15 AM, Assembly Room, Melissa Martin
Following the guidance of Clarance Oddbody, the bumbling angel in It’s a Wonderful Life, come and wonder what it would be like if George Bailey had never been born. With the same sort of wonder, we will listen to the biblical story. What characters wondered about the coming of the Messi-ah? Is this wonder actually doubt? In the season of Advent is it ok to doubt? What would it be like if Jesus had never been born?

Decorate the Health for Haiti Christmas TreeHelp decorate our Christmas tree in the Assembly Room with items for Friends for Health in Haiti. Each day 100 pa-tient consultations take place with a staff of seven in rural northeast Haiti, which was recently damaged by the hurri-cane.
Items to place on the Christmas tree include the follow-ing: muscle rub, antibiotic cream, gauze, tape, Band-Aids, ACE bandages, thermometers, wooden tongue depressors, non-latex gloves, hand lotion, small cakes of soap, packaged toothbrushes, small childrens toys (matchbox cars, jump ropes, etc.), barrettes, and hair ribbons. All items will be sent with the January 2017 Presbytery mission trip to Haiti.
Alternative GiftsGive the gift of mission. The Mission Committee offers Al-ternative Gifts as a way to share and support the work of our partners in mission. Honor a friend by making a donation on his or her behalf to the group of your choice. You will receive a greeting card that explains the work your gift sup-ports. Stop by the Alternative Gifts table during Fellowship.
Memorial PoinsettiasToday is the last day to submit your order to give a poinsettia in memory or in honor of a loved one. A full listing of poin-settias will be printed in the worship bulletin next Sunday, December 18, and after worship deacons will deliver the plants to the ill, homebound, and bereaved. Suggested do-nation is $20. Make checks payable to Nassau Presbyterian Church. For your convenience, order cards are available in the main office.

Advent Service of RemembranceAdvent and Christmas can be challenging for those who are grieving. During this time, join us for a Service of Remem-brance today at 2:00 PM in Niles Chapel. This quiet service includes scripture, singing, and prayer. We gather to ac-knowledge our sadness and grief, we seek God’s healing and restoration, and we offer one another the gift of fellowship.
Camino de Santiago Youth TripToday at 1:15 PM in Room 304, come to an informational meeting about the proposed trip this summer to walk a por-tion of the Camino de Santiago from Saturday, July 22, to Sunday, August 6, 2017. The “Way of St. James” is a popu-lar pilgrimage and hiking route to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in northwestern Spain. Our pilgrims would include Senior High students (age 15+), parents, PTS interns, and Mark Edwards.
Christmas Joy OfferingNext Sunday, December 18, we will collect the PC(USA) denominational Christmas Joy Offering. Each year during the Advent and Christmas season, we turn our eyes to Beth-lehem and celebrate the wondrous gift of Jesus Christ, our Savior. You can honor this gift by giving to the Christmas Joy Offering. Money raised provides assistance to current and retired church workers in times of need and also goes toward developing future leaders at Presbyterian-related racial-ethnic schools and colleges.
Illustrated AdventCome to the Great Wall outside the Assembly Room and join our intergenerational Advent art project. In the midst of the hustle and bustle when it feels difficult to slow down and unwind, come and grab a crayon, take a deep breath, and find inspiration. Add your flair to our Advent coloring posters and color to your heart’s content. Come and color! Brought to you by the Membership Committee.
