2 THE SECOND SUNDAY OF A DVENT

Welcome to Worship at St. Paul’s!!

The community of believers at St. Paul Lutheran Church takes delight in having guests inits worship. Our congregation strives to present a witness to Christ that is faithful to the Word of

Holy Scripture and to the confessional heritage of the Lutheran tradition.

GUESTS:  We encourage you to sign a “visitor” card located in the pews and our Guest Booklocated in the hall outside the worship space.

HOLY COMMUNION IS OFFERED by invitation of the Lord himself. Access to the Lord’s Tableis by invitation of the Lord himself. All baptized believers who trust that Christ is presented in the

celebration of the Holy Eucharist are invited to come forward and receive Christ in the BlessedSacrament. Communion is distributed by coming up the center aisle at the direction of the usherand returning along the side aisle. Those who do not wish to receive the Sacrament may comeforward with their arms crossed and receive a blessing. Those who, for any reason, cannot receivethe wine may receive the Sacrament under the form of bread alone. In doing so, a communicantstill receives the whole Christ.

TO THE PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN—Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s house. All are welcome!

Sit toward the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what’s going on in worship. They tire of seeing the backs of others’ heads.

Quietly and kindly explain the parts of the Liturgy and actions of the worship leaders. Share thehymnal and the worship folder with them at eye level.

Sing the hymns, pray and voice the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you.

If you have to leave worship with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back. Jesus said“Let the children come to me.”

Remember that the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond to the

Church, to God, and to one another. Let them know that they are at home in this house of worship.

Please let your child use this worship folder to draw and doodle.

The presence of children is a gift to the Church. Please welcome children and give a smile ofencouragement to their families.

THE SECOND SUNDAY OF A DVENT  3

HOLY COMMUNION THE SECOND SUNDAY OF A DVENT

 Ambrose, Bishop of Milan (d. 397)Sunday, December 7, 2014 + 9:30 a.m.

YOUR GOD IS COMING!   John called people to repent, to clear the decks, to completely reorder their lives so that nothing would get in the way of the Lord's coming. The reading from Isaiah gives the context for this radical call: theassurance of forgiveness that encourages us to repent; the promise that the coming one will be gentlewith the little ones. Isaiah calls us all to be heralds with John, to lift up our voices fearlessly and say,"See, your God is coming!" We say it to one another in worship, and with our lives in a world in need of justice and peace.

+ + + + + + + + + + + +•   Numbers marked with the word “page…” in small case are found in the front portion of the

hymnal at the bottom left and right corners of the page.

•   Numbers marked “HYMN…” in caps are found in the back portion of the hymnal in the upperleft and right corners of the page.

•  We use the hymnal Lutheran Book of Worship (1978) which is the green hardcover book inthe pew rack.

•

The Liturgy (which means “the work of the people”) involves participation. The texts markedin plain text are spoken by the worship leaders while the assembly responds with bold  text.

The GREETINGThe presiding minister and the assembly greet each other .

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the

Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

The KYRIE (“Lord, have mercy”) pages 99-100

The PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray…the prayer concludes…one God, now and forever.

 Amen.

The assembly is seated.

LITURGY OF THE  W ORD The FIRST READING Isaiah 40:1-11In grand, flowing, poetic lines, the prophet announces that the exile of God's people in Babylon is over. The Lord will deliver Israel and will care for her as a shepherd cares for his sheep. This word can be

trusted, because the only enduring reality in life is the word of the Lord.Comfort, O comfort my people,

says your God.2Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,

and cry to herthat she has served her term, that her penalty is paid,

that she has received from the LORD's handdouble for all her sins.

3 A voice cries out:"In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD,make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

4Every valley shall be lifted up,

and every mountain and hill be made low;the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.

5Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken."

6 A voice says, "Cry out!"

And I said, "What shall I cry?" All people are grass,

their constancy is like the flower of the field.7The grass withers, the flower fades,

 when the breath of the LORD blows upon it;

surely the people are grass.8The grass withers, the flower fades;but the word of our God will stand forever.

9Get you up to a high mountain,O Zion, herald of good tidings;lift up your voice with strength,O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings,

lift it up, do not fear;say to the cities of Judah,"Here is your God!"

10See, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him;his reward is with him,and his recompense before him.

11He will feed his flock like a shepherd;he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep.

The reading concludes:The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.The PSALMODY Psalm 85 After introduction, the choir or cantor will sing the refrain once, then repeated by all. The assemblysings the refrain after each verse.

I will hear what God proclaims;the LORD—for he proclaims peace to his peopleNear indeed is his salvation to those who fear him, glory dwelling in our land. Refrain

Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss.Truth shall spring out of the earth,

and justice shall look down from heaven. Refrain

The LORD himself will give his benefits, our land shall yield its increase.

Justice shall walk before him,and prepare the way of his steps. Refrain

The SECOND READING 2 Peter 3:8–15aThis short letter deals with pressing concerns regarding the final advent of Jesus, especially concernsthat could arise over its apparent delay. The author of the letter calls on Christians to anticipate the promised coming of the Lord through conduct dedicated to God.

8

But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like athousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. 9The Lord is not slow abouthis promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any toperish, but all to come to repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come like athief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements willbe dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will bedisclosed.11Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought

you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening thecoming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze anddissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? 13But, in accordance with hispromise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is athome.14

Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found byhim at peace, without spot or blemish; 15and regard the patience of our Lord assalvation.

The reading concludes:

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The assembly stands to welcome the Gospel. The choir sings the appointed verse with the refrainrepeated by all.

The GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

THE SECOND SUNDAY OF A DVENT  7

The HOLY GOSPEL Mark 1:1-8

The Gospel of Mark does not begin with a story of Jesus' birth but with the voice of one crying out in thewilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord.

The Lord be with you.

And also with you. The Holy +1 Gospel according to Mark.Glory to you, O Lord.

The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.2 As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,"See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,

who will prepare your way;3the voice of one crying out in the wilderness:

'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,'"

4 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism ofrepentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And people from the whole Judeancountryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and werebaptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed

with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wildhoney. 7He proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; Iam not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8I have baptized

you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."The reading concludes:

The Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, O Christ.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE W EEK

Sunday, December 7, 2014

Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, died around 397

While a governor of northern Italy, Ambrose was elected bishop of Milan on the same day he was baptized. He was a famous preacher, a writer of hymns we still sing today, and helped leadSt. Augustine to faith.

Saturday, December 13Lucy, martyr, died 304

Lucy was a young Christian of Sicily who was martyred during the persecutions underEmperor Diocletian. Her celebration became particularly important in Sweden and Norway, perhaps because the feast of Lucia (whose name means "light") originally fell on the shortestday of the year.

Sunday, December 14

John of the Cross, renewer of the church, died 1591  John was a member of the Carmelite monastic order, and worked to reform it. His writingsreflect a deep interest in mystical thought and meditation.
