Our Vision for Evangelization & Discipleship

As Catholics, Jesus calls us to be disciples and to make disciples. Making disciples is

called evangelization. Evangelization is at the heart of all our ministries at Good Shepherd

because evangelization is at the heart of what it means to follow Jesus Christ.

Moving forward as a parish community, let’s reflect together on the five characteristics of

being a disciple: welcome, encounter, grow, serve, and share. What is the purpose?

We are seeking a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and a greater urgency in living out

Our Mission:

Be Disciples. Make Disciples.

In welcoming all, we form disciples

who know, love, and serve

God and neighbor.

Who is a disciple?

A disciple welcomes God's people,

encounters Jesus Christ, grows in

Jesus Christ, serves God's people,

and shares the Gospel.

Pastor’s Corner SUNDAY REFLECTION: AWAITING GOD’S SALVATION The world does not seem big enough to contain the jubilation of the first reading. In the Gospel reading, the Roman empire isn’t big enough, either. The great powers of Rome are named and made to stand waiting for the arrival of God’s salvation. And we find Paul meditating joyfully on what really matters. According to Baruch, the city of Jerusalem is like a person standing on tiptoe looking for God’s salvation, which is coming from the east. Those who were led away on foot, heads down, now come back, a proud people. Why, the very way is smoothed out. The path is lined with fragrant, lush trees. It can’t get any better than this, can it? Well, yes, it can. For a voice calls out in the desert. Here is the beginning of the salvation of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE: DECEMBER 12 “Today we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. In 1531 Mary appeared to Saint Juan Diego, a simple peasant farmer, near Mexico City. On his cloak, she miraculously sealed the image of herself as the little brown woman of Indian and Spanish descent, pregnant with her son. What the Spanish conquistadors were unable to accomplish, through her intercession, thousands daily were converted to her Son Jesus. We honor the Virgin of Guadalupe, Star of Evangelization, until the Lord’s glory dawns.”

- Fr. Richard

PASTOR’S VISION STATEMENT The Catholic Community of Good Shepherd is intentional about evangelizing and making disciples in the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare, especially by seeking out the lost in need of reconciliation and conversion of heart to God, the Church, to oneself and others, so that all may experience the peace and joy of a personal relationship with Jesus.

Mass Intentions & Readings: Dec. 10 - 16

Vocations Corner Franciscan Friars, Third Order Regular (TOR) Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus www.franciscanstor.org

Many international orders, such as the Franciscans TOR, are divided geographically by “Provinces.” Although all provinces follow the same Rule and Spirituality, provinces can differ from one another through leadership, culture, history, and ministry. In the United States, there are two TOR provinces, and the province that serves Good Shepherd is the Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Our province started with six Irish immigrant friars serving to educate Catholics in western-central Pennsylvania. Over time, they grew and started a prep school and

college, now evolved into St. Francis University, in Loretto, PA. Eventually, the friars also served in high schools, seminaries, and other colleges, such as Franciscan University in Steubenville, OH, with various parishes.

Our province currently serves these two universities, along with parishes in Florida, northern Virginia, central Pennsylvania, and the Fort Worth Diocese, including St. Maria Goretti and St. Andrew’s Catholic Churches. We also have friars serving in hospitals, retreat ministry, and military chaplaincy.

For information on vocations, contact Fr. Jason ([email protected]) or visit www.gscc.net/vocations, www.fwdioc.org/vocations, or www.franciscanstor.org

For information on our Vocations Icon (seen at Sunday Mass) and an opportunity to pray as a household for vocations, visit www.gscc.net/vocations

Christmas Gifts for the Friars Fr. Richard, Fr. Ron, and Fr. Jason are very appreciative that people want to offer us gifts at Christmas. Honestly, we are in need of very little. The friars would be very honored to accept any contributions which will be directed to the retired Franciscan TOR community in Loretto, PA on behalf of the friars serving at GSCC. Please address such gifts to any of the friars with checks payable to Franciscan Friars TOR. Thank you for your generosity.

Ministry Spotlight

Keith R, Alpha

What is Alpha, and how has this ministry helped others to encounter Christ personally? “The goal of Alpha is to bring people into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and to raise up leaders in the parish. Guests who attend Alpha experience three elements that work together: a meal, a short video on Christianity, and small group discussion. The meal is a time to socialize and build new relationships. The videos cover basic Christianity with topics such as Who is Jesus?, Why did Jesus die? How do I have faith?, etc. The videos are surprisingly entertaining and thought-provoking. The third element is the small group discussion, and is arguably the most important part of Alpha. In small group, guests have the opportunity to share their thoughts in a no-pressure, friendly, and fun environment. Over the course of the 12 weeks, people who often don’t know each other can become surprisingly close. As a result of the Alpha experience, many lives are transformed and become open to the Good News of Jesus Christ.”

Why did you join this ministry? “I learned about Alpha from a priest I greatly admire. Once I experienced Alpha for the first time, I was hooked. I am just now finishing my 9th Alpha course.”

How have you personally encountered Christ through your ministry? “I have experienced His presence through the amazing videos that never cease to inspire me. Plus, I have encountered the Lord in the lives of our guests as they become open to embracing faith in their lives.”

How have you helped others encounter Christ through your ministry? “Although surprisingly simple, the Alpha process works if we but follow the Alpha plan. I have seen it over and over. There is something about the Alpha hospitality, the informational videos, and the sharing of thoughts in a non-judgmental environment that warms our guests to the message of Jesus Christ. Through Alpha, I have seen nonbelievers become believers, uncommitted Christians come into a personal relationship with Jesus, and committed Christians become even more committed Christians.”

New Scripture Study for Women!

Our Parish School

Tuesdays starting Jan. 8 | 9:30 - 11:00am in the Shepherd Center If we consider that God is the Divine Bridegroom and the Church is his Bride, then the prophets can be seen as “spiritual marriage counselors.” They afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, calling us to return to our covenant relationship with God. They urge us to repentance, warn us of the dangers of sin, and announce the blessings of faithfulness. Their prophetic words speak to us even today, as they draw us closer to our heavenly Bridegroom.

Each week, you will come to know a prophet from Scripture and learn how his message sheds light on our faith and our lives. In getting to know these messengers of God, you will read Scripture and the Catechism, while answering thought-provoking questions and powerful reflections. Plus, you will learn practical ways to apply the messages of the prophets in your own life.

CATHOLIC INQUIRY Monday Evenings | 7:00pm | Rooms 2 & 3 RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is the process whereby those who are not Catholic can explore the teachings of the Catholic faith. RCIA is also open to all who would like to learn more about the Catholic faith. All are welcome! For information, contact Father Ronald: [email protected]

Learn More About the Catholic Faith!

On Sunday, November 18, (L-R), Mike V, Nichole G, and Barbara L were welcomed into the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) process as we celebrated the Rite of Acceptance and Welcome with them at the 11:00am Aass. All three had already completed a period of Inquiry at GSCC covering basic information about the Catholic Faith. Father Richard (far left) was the Celebrant and Father Ronald (far right) was the RCIA Director.

Nichole has yet to receive the Sacrament of Baptism, so she was accepted as a Catechumen. Mike and Barbara have already received the Sacrament of Baptism in another faith tradition, so they were welcomed as Candidates. They each chose a sponsor who will journey with them through the RCIA process and who provides a compelling witness in matters of faith.

Through RCIA, they will continue to receive catechetical instruction which leads them not only to an appropriate acquaintance with the teachings of the Church, but also to a profound sense of the mystery of salvation in which they desire to participate. At Sunday Mass, Catechumens and Candidates, or those seeking to be, leave the church after the homily to attend BOW (Breaking Open the Word) where they reflect on the Word of God together led by a BOW facilitator.

We express our heartiest congratulations to Mike, Nichole, and Barbara on their RCIA journey. Please continue to pray for and encourage these individuals. They continue to need your example, support, welcome, and prayers. To Christ be the glory now and forever!

I began life as a Presbyterian. Baptized as an infant in the Presbyterian church and then confirmed, in the 6

th Grade, as a

Presbyterian. After Confirmation, however, my spiritual life waned. I began to attend church less and less until, by the time high school ended, I was not attending church at all. I would enter adulthood without

any spiritual participation at all.

Each time I would start to revive my church attendance, I would stall shortly after I started. Through the years I would make comments about how I really respected the reverence of the Catholic Church and its adherence to tradition. There were no Catholics in my life at that time and nobody that could lead me to inquire further about this nagging thought that the Catholic Church might be the place for me.

When I began to date a Catholic woman and ask her questions about the faith, I found my thoughts about the Catholic Church to be accurate: the respectful reverence that surrounds the Catholic Church and its Sacraments and Rites were what I had been missing. To fully worship God, I needed to be a part of a community that pursued worship with an appropriate dignity.

I believe that in the last 5 years that I have been an active attendee at Mass – though not officially Catholic – the Holy Spirit has been working in me a desire to see through all of the worldly obstacles placed in my way. Coming into the Church is not the end of the journey of my faith – it is just the beginning.

*Chris came into full communion with the Catholic Church at the 5:00pm Mass on Sat., November 11.

To learn about the trip logistics, including who can go, where we will stay, and cost, contact Mission Coordinator Tere Martin at [email protected].

SAVE THE DATE! June 23 - 29, 2019 | Family & Adult Mission | Houston We will once again travel to Houston, where we will help fellow Texans recover from the effects of Hurricane Harvey. If you like to knit or crochet and are looking for a way to answer God’s call to serve, then please consider becoming a member of Good Shepherd’s Prayer Shawl Ministry. This ministry is a wonderful way to demonstrate God’s love, comfort, and mercy to people experiencing difficult times.

Members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry meet the 1st

Wednesday of each month at 9:30am in Room 5 to knit and/or crochet as a group and pray over the shawls and lap blankets. If you prefer to knit or crochet prayer shawls and lap blankets on your own and then give them to our Prayer Shawl Ministry to pray over, simply bring your creations to the Parish Office, where you can complete a donation card.

Donations of regular worsted yarn are always appreciated!

For more information and to donate yarn, please contact Ann Lussier, Lead Minister for the GSCC Prayer Shawl Ministry, at [email protected].

Good News of the saving victory of Jesus Christ in our families,

Every Life: Cherished, Chosen, Sent

Jesus said, “The Kingdom of God is among you!” (Luke 17:21) As you journey through Advent, celebrate the birth of Jesus and reflect on the Kingdom of God gifted to you.

What gift are you giving to God?

What gifts really matter to God?

What do you fulfill the Kingdom of God on Earth for neighbors of other races or ethnicity?

How will you change the status quo when praying “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth …” ?

The work to build God’s Kingdom on earth continues -- a just society living in holiness. If you are performing works of charity and mercy now, what more can you do?

Work for justice in God’s Kingdom on Earth!

Join the Social Justice Ministry to help solve root causes of injustice (Robert Torres at [email protected]).

Interreligious Dialogue

Join Good Shepherd’s Interreligious Dialogue Group! We joyfully present knowledge of Catholicism to others and learn the tenets of different faiths. Ministry participation entails interacting with other faith communities a few times a year.

Join Us This Sunday, December 9!

The Men’s Club will be sponsoring Breakfast with St. Nicholas after the 9:00am & 11:00am Masses on Sunday, Dec. 9. Price: $6/adult; $4/child; $20/family. We hope to see you there!

Who is Saint Nicholas? The most famous story about St. Nicholas tells how the custom of hanging up stockings to get presents in first started! It goes like this: There was a poor man who had three daughters. He was so poor, he did not have enough money for a dowry, so his daughters couldn't get married. One night, Nicholas secretly dropped a bag of gold down the chimney and into the house (This meant that the oldest daughter was then able to be married.).

The bag fell into a stocking that had been hung by the fire to dry! This was repeated later with the second daughter. Finally, determined to discover the person who had given him the money, the father secretly hid by the fire every evening until he caught Nicholas dropping in a bag of gold. Nicholas begged the man to not tell anyone what he had done, because he did not want to bring attention to himself. But soon the news got out and when anyone received a secret gift, it was thought that maybe it was from Nicholas.
