Good Shepherd Catholic Community Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord

1

A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR: JOURNEY TO EASTER AND EVANGELIZING My prayer for all of you and yours throughout these fifty days of Easter is the greeting of Peace that Jesus gave to his disciples on that first Easter day. We share His Peace in the greeting “The Lord is risen” and we respond, “He is truly risen.” In the forty days of Lent we have been anticipating our new life in Jesus. From his Transfiguration on Mt. Tabor to his Crucifixion on Mt. Calvary, we have been on a journey. It all began when we caught a glimpse of Jesus’ Glory on the mountain with Peter, James and John. Like them, we may not have fully understood what this new life is all about: that his Passion leads to the glory of the Resurrection. Until we encounter Jesus as our Savior, we may not know how to evangelize others to a new life in Jesus. When the Samaritan woman at the well thirsted for water, Jesus himself thirsted for her faith. With faith, she became an evangelizer to anyone who would listen to her story. At our baptism, we too received the gift to be evangelizers of what Jesus has done in our lives. The man blind from birth wanted to see. Jesus anointed him and led him from darkness to the light of faith. Seeing and embracing the face of God in Jesus, the man received the spiritual insight to become an evangelizer and gave testimony of what Jesus did for him to everyone who asked. We too are anointed at baptism to be evangelizers by sharing our own experience of Jesus. Lazarus was raised from the tomb by Jesus and he then continued to serve Jesus as a faithful follower. Just as Jesus raised Lazarus to new life, we, who are baptized, are transformed into new life of resurrection: adopted sons and daughters of God, brothers and sisters of the Lord Jesus. Will we too be evangelizers who give witness to how Jesus changed our lives and made of us his faithful disciple? On Easter Sunday Mary Magdalene went to Jesus’ tomb. There the messenger of God stood at the empty tomb and told her that the crucified Jesus had been raised from the dead. She believed. Instructed by God’s messenger, she immediately went to share the Good News with Peter and the disciples in Jerusalem. Mary Magdalene is the first evangelizer of the risen Jesus. She is the “apostle to the apostles.” Because of her, many became disciples of Jesus who also carried the news of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection to the world. Join this company of disciples by taking the opportunity this Easter to personally invite the seekers, disaffected, unbelievers and the unchurched to come with you to Mass to hear the good news of Jesus. Life can feel empty without Christ for those who are lonely, lost, forgotten, bruised or broken. They are still at the empty tomb waiting for you to be the evangelizer who accompanies them on the journey to Mass in our hospitable community. They need you to accompany them through the Alpha program. The miracle of Easter keeps on giving to the thirsty, the blind, and the lifeless who are searching in the dark for God’s Spirit in the water, light and life of faith that only Jesus can fulfill. Love them as Christ loves them! You are in my thoughts and prayers throughout this Easter Season. I thank you for the new life we all share in our Catholic Community of Good Shepherd.

Natural Family Planning Classes

Tuesdays | 7:00 - 9:00pm April 30, May 14, & May 28 Want to postpone pregnancy? Having difficulty conceiving? Trying to stay in line with Catholic teaching? Natural Family Planning (or NFP) is a natural

and effective form of family planning. Through use of the Billings Ovulation Method, couples are able to track the woman’s natural and unique signs of fertility and infertility each day in order to postpone or to help achieve pregnancy. It should not be confused with the “rhythm method” as it can be used by women in all stages of life and is scientifically proven to be 99.5% effective when properly used. It is 100% natural and in line with Church teaching. Register at gscc.net/nfp (Cost: $50/couple)

Find Hope & Healing

Monday Evenings | 7:00pm | Rooms 2 & 3 | RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is the process whereby those who are not Catholic can explore the teachings of the Catholic faith. RCIA is also open to all who would like to learn more about the Catholic faith. All are welcome! Contact Fr. Ronald: [email protected]

This weekend at the Easter Vigil, one RCIA Elect, Nichole G, and 12 RCIA Candidates (Jim H, Linda K, Jack L, Mark M, Kyle J, Barbara L, Kyler S, Cindy S, David T, James T, Jennifer T and Mike V) came into full communion with the Catholic Church. These individuals have spent countless hours preparing for this special day, each receiving catechetical instruction leading them not only to an appropriate acquaintance with the teachings of the Church but also to a profound sense of the mystery of salvation in which they desire to participate. Earlier that day at 10:00am, the Elect participated in the Rite of Ephphetha, also referred to as The Rite of Opening the Ears and Mouth. This impresses on the Elect their need of grace in order that they may hear the Word of God and profess it for salvation. Please continue to pray for our newest Catholics. Nichole was baptized, confirmed, and received her First Holy Communion at the Easter Vigil while our 12 former Candidates, who had already been baptized in another faith tradition, were also confirmed and received their First Holy Communion at the Easter Vigil. To Christ be the Glory! (Photos are in the Narthex.)

Social Justice

Jesus Christ is risen! Peace be with you! Jesus said “The Kingdom of God is among you!” (Luke 17:21) What would the Kingdom of God on Earth be like?

What would life be like if Jesus were making decisions instead of others?

Whose needs do you ignore?

Whose welcome do you reject?

Would you think and act like God to love those you dislike, fear, or hate?

How will you continue Jesus’ work to build the Kingdom of God on Earth, i.e., a just society living in holiness?

PARISH ROADMAP FOR EVANGELIZATION & DISCIPLESHIP Taking the next step forward as a parish community to more deeply live out evangelization

Our Mission:

Be Disciples. Make Disciples.

In welcoming all, we form disciples

who know, love, and serve

God and neighbor.

Who is a disciple?

A disciple welcomes God's people,

encounters Jesus Christ, grows in

Jesus Christ, serves God's people,

and shares the Gospel.

“COME, FOLLOW ME.” - MT. 4:19 | “GO, MAKE DISCIPLES.” - MT. 28:19

As Catholics, Jesus calls us to be disciples and to make disciples. Making disciples is

called evangelization. Evangelization is at the heart of all our ministries at Good Shepherd

because evangelization is at the heart of what it means to follow Jesus Christ.

Moving forward as a parish community, let’s reflect together on the five characteristics of

being a disciple: welcome, encounter, grow, serve, and share. What is the purpose?

We are seeking a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and a greater urgency in living out

our Catholic calling of evangelization. Learn more: gscc.net/disciples
