Here we are at the beginning of another year! 2020 - WOW - that rolls off the tongue in a very strange way. When I was a kid back in the seven-ties, this date seemed like we would be living in a crazy “Jetsonesque” future time. Remember the little car that flew through the air, computers, and ro-bots that provided our every need.

Spacely Sprockets and dogs that you could almost un-derstand. “Rut -RO- Rorge!” Well, maybe I did not ex-pect the flying cars, but I was sure that we would be healthier and happier. That we would have solved a bunch of our problems - problems that come from fear. Do not be afraid the Bible says: about 365 times. I find it interesting that hate is born out of the act of fear. Usually we think that we are about to lose something to someone or some concept that brings us to the level of fear that incubates and grows into hate. We no longer see those with whom we do not agree with as people, we see them as an

obstacle, something that needs to be oblite-rated. If we could just get rid of them - write them off, vote them out of office, arrest them, restrict their rights, and some-how portray them as less than human - then everything will be all right! Life would be perfect! It seems we believe it is okay to

treat them unjustly if they are wrong or they are deemed unworthy. Then it is okay to deny them basic things for life. We even make laws that restrict our own freedoms to protect us from “The EVIL ONE or ONES”. My oldest son and I went to a friend’s house one afternoon. He was a Luthier and a pretty good one! I had a big crack in my guitar and he stabilized it for me! While we were there, my friend, who is a very devout Christian, said something about the devil. My son, then about 10 years old, asked “who?”. It was then that I realized that I raised my sons in a place where the dev-il was not a key player. I told my friend the devil doesn’t get much air play at our house, that is why he doesn’t get what you are saying! I realized inadvertently that our family focus was on making posi-tive decisions. Yeah sure we made a few mistakes, but they were all ours, no one made me or my kids do them. It was no one’s fault but

Do not be afraid the Bible says: about 365 times

our own! I have noticed that my oldest son is far more patient and tolerant of people who think differently or have different strengths and weaknesses than I did at his age. I guess somehow my son had found something that had eluded me and at times still eludes me in my life. Empathy, tolerance, and understanding seem to be all but forgotten at times. In the natural world, everything rarely goes as you plan it! Does that make the other players evil? Does that mean that the systems must be made to conform to our wishes? NO! It means that no matter what falls in our path, no matter what others do, think, or say, we must find the positive path, a path that works for all of us, to contentment. As I get older, I experience the fact that I am not always correct. Yes, I said it; I am wrong sometimes (maybe most times). My plan is not always the best plan. That even if my plan is altered by nature or the ideas and paths of others, I need not fear!!!! That a positive answer, a less restricted path, will emerge and the way will be made clear. As I look over the past years of my life, I can see where there was a lot of fear, but that the path of love always triumphed. The best things come out of community, not one idea but many! This communal thinking takes a lot more time, but it is worth the effort! May you have the patience and the willingness to stop and listen, to stand for a moment in silence, to hear the still small voice guiding you to the path of collaboration! May this year be a year for your path to grow wide with the addition of the paths of others in your life.

Peace, Pastor Lance

Christian Symbol

CROSS ON THE ROCK—The rock is often used as a symbol of the Lord, our strength and firm foundation. A cross rising from the rock ech-oes many Bible verses that proclaim Christ as the rock of salvation; for example, “He alone is my rock and my salvation …” (Psalm 62:2, ESV).

HAPPY NEW YEARS

Starting a new year is often a time when we think of making a change in something. Many people start off by making a New Years Resolution. Lose weight, go to the gym, quit smoking, eat healthy, and save money are common resolutions that people choose and are also the most common to break. These are all very good choices and yes, they are all wonderful things to achieve, but I would like to challenge you to think outside of the box.

For 2019, my resolution was to crack open every egg I used one- handed. I always wanted to learn how to do this with ease and I can now say that this is the first resolution that I have actually achieved. So now when I am baking goodies, I crack my eggs one-handed and, although I am usually the only one in the kitch-en to see, it not only speeds up my progress it feels good to achieve something that looks impressive to me at least.

So for 2020, our year of great vision, think achievable. Below are a few ideas to help you think of some possibilities. Good Luck!

Reconnect with estranged friends or family

Learn to cook something new

Spend money on things that create memories

Compliment someone

Grow a mustache

Read a book

Go for a walk

Learn something you wish you’d learned as a child

Start a diary and write down your thoughts

Send a letter to family/friend

The possibilities are endless!

Brown Bag Bible Study

We are Back!!!

It took the Israelites 40 years to travel through the wilderness and took us almost that long to travel through the book of Exodus!

They have been camped waiting for us at the foot of Mt. Horeb for the month of December. We decided to take a break for December and now we are back in the wilderness, learning about the birth of the Jewish faith. Bring a bagged lunch and join us as we continue our trek toward the Land of Milk and Honey!!!

We will meet each Monday at 12 noon starting January 13th!!!!

Hands of Change will be making the Monticello area a better world throughout the month of January!

Come join us after school each Monday that Monticello Schools are in session. We will visit elders in the assisted living centers, fill food bank orders, & feed the town of Monti-cello at the Welcome Table. Youth are picked up by the flag pole at Monticello Schools, given a snack, and transported to a service site. Parents pick up youth at 6 pm at Zwingli Church.

For more information or to register as a Hand of Change participant, call 608-938-

4369 or go to www.zwingliucc.com and fill out the application. This program is free and offered to all youth!!!

At Home With God

Of all persons, the Christian should be best prepared for whatever the New Year brings. … In Christ he has dis-posed of a thousand enemies that other men must face alone and unpre-pared. He can face his tomorrow cheer-ful and unafraid be-cause yesterday he turned his feet into the ways of peace and today he lives in God. The man who has made God his dwelling place will always have a safe habitation.

Kalberwurst Supper Saturday, April 18, 2020

Thank you to everyone who contributed to and made pur-chases at the Women’s Guild Pre-Christmas Bake Sale. Our annual event is held on the second Saturday of December in Zwingli’s North Room. It is wonderful to see the support in baking and buying that this fundraiser provides for Zwingli’s Women’s Guild. This year, we raised around $918.00 dollars, which is actually $40.00 less than last year, but still a very good sale. Also, thank you to everyone who donated cookies for the Brotherhood Cheer Boxes. This year, the Men’s Brotherhood packaged around 45 Cheer Boxes immediately after the Bake Sale was over.

Thank you to everyone! Sincerely, Event Chairpersons Cyndi Foley & Barb Pluss

+ Men’s Brotherhood

In the late spring of this year, the B&G Committee started looking into replacing the yellowing storm win-dows. We contacted companies that do this kind of work. When they started looking into it, they found many of the stained glass windows are in need of repair. Also, some of the window sills and frames are com-pletely rotted out. We have received one quote for the repairs and replace-

ment of the yellowed plexiglass. We are working with a second company for a quote. Both of these companies work with church-es around our area and in other states. One worked with Swiss Church in New Glarus and the other worked with the Monroe Arts Center. Our aim is to have all the information for the Annual Meeting in January or as soon as possible. Thank you, Zwingli UCC Building & Grounds Committee

Church Cancellation Policy

On various occasions it may be necessary to cancel Sunday morning activities of the church (worship and

Sunday School). Such cancellations will generally be the result of weather conditions including heavy

snowfall (often with associated high winds), extreme

cold, or icy road conditions.

1. The congregation president – in consultation

with the pastor – will be responsible. 2. The decision to cancel will be made by 6:45

A.M. on Sunday morning. 3. Either the pastor or the congregation president

will notify the local radio station (WEKZ) and

Channel 15 to make a public announcement regarding the cancellation.

Guidelines regarding a decision to cancel: Heavy blowing and blinding snow (whiteout conditions). Extremely icy roads, parking lot or walkways. A wind chill warning. Any announcement by the National Weather Bureau deeming conditions to be hazardous.

(Reviewed by the Consistory January 8, 2014)
