READINGS We are chosen, God is calling us to go out!

My dear friends and parishioners of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Every Chris-

tian share in Christ's mission. We are called to continue spreading the Good News of the

Gospel. When we received the sacrament of Baptism we were incorporated in this Mission.

We are called to be kings, prophets, and priests. When we were baptized, we became mem-

bers of his body, that same body that reaches out to men and women in every age to lead

them to God.

That is the mission Jesus gave his apostles in today's Gospel: he sent them to reach out to

others with Christ's good news of salvation. In fact, the very word "apostle" comes from the

Greek word meaning: "to be sent." Every Christian share in this "apostolate." Eve-

ry Christian is sent out to bear witness to Christ, to bring his wisdom and his healing touch

to those who are in need, spiritually and physically.

These instructions can be summed up in two words: trust and perseverance. Besides the

clothes on their backs, the Apostles are only supposed to bring a walking stick and their

sandals. Every need they have along the way will be met, but it will be met by

God's providence, not by their own self-sufficiency: they are to trust in God to sustain their

efforts. The walking stick and the sandals symbolize a determination to continue moving

forward to persevere in their efforts to fulfill God's will.

WE must not give up. Even when we face opposition, persecution, and a cold welcome (which they will - Christ leaves no room for doubt about that), they are not to be deterred; they are to persevere. Amos, a chosen prophet, was rejected by the very people that God sent him to. They refused to listen to his prophecy, insulted him, and sent him packing. And yet, he was a true prophet, beloved and chosen by God.

Jesus, when he gives his instructions to the Apostles in today's Gospel, tells them how to behave when people reject them - he knows ahead of time that it is going to happen! God understands faithful Christians will not always receive a warm welcome in this fallen world. But he calls us to be faithful anyway, to trust and persevere in what is right and good even when it is not popular, because, as today's Psalm reminds us, that is how we will "see God's kindness and experience his salvation."

With my prayers,

Fr. Gerardo Cisneros, M.Sp.S. Parochial Vicar

NOSOTROS no debemos rendirnos.

P. Gerardo Cisneros, M.Sp.S. Vicario Parroquial

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

God calls us to bring His Word to all corners of

the earth. What does that mean for you and

me? We are just simple and humble folks

trying to find our way through the Gospel and

our world. After all, we are not professional

preachers but gentle servants. Jesus summons

us to take his message on the road and bring it

from the pew to the pavement. We cannot

keep the joy of the Gospel to ourselves but

must bring it into every aspect of our lives: our

families, our schools, our work, our corpora-

tions, our politics, our social circles, and our

philosophies. We cannot just accept the

wisdom of the world as true and conduct our

lives as if the Good News is a separate matter.

They are one. Jesus never asked his friends to

go and construct buildings where people could

come to hear the truth. He asked them to go

to their homes and meet them one on one,

face to face. When the rubber meets the road

and the message is challenging, rejection is

quite possible. That’s the litmus test for

whether we’re really doing what we have been

asked.
