WORLD DAY FOR GRANDPARENTS AND THE ELDERLY

SUNDAY JULY 25TH, 2021

“I am with you always” (Mt 28:20): this is the promise the Lord made to his disciples before he ascended into heaven. They are the words that he repeats to you today, dear grandfathers and grandmothers, dear elderly friends.

These are the first words of Pope Francis’ message for this first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly (you can read the entire message on our website by clicking here). Especially during these pandemic times it is so important to reach out to our grandparents and elderly friends, to ensure they know they are not alone, and to learn from them as well. If you are able to safely visit with the elderly people in your life over the next week, either in person, on the phone or online, we encourage you to do so. Perhaps offer to bring them to Mass, or if they are not ready to join us in person yet perhaps you can arrange for them to be able to watch Mass online or listen to the homily posted on the St. Francis website. Whatever makes sense for your family, we simply encourage you to connect with your elderly loved ones,

pray with them and show them that you are with them always. We will pray in particular for our grandparents and elderly parishioners at Mass this weekend, may God bless them with health, love and peace.

We invite you to watch the video prepared by the Canadian Catholic Bishops for this special day by clicking on this picture

You can also see all the resources for this day on our website by clicking here.

RECONCILIATION AND HEALING In response to the continuing suffering of our Indigenous brothers and sisters, and the desire of Catholics to learn, act and heal together, the Diocese of Hamilton has put together a very thorough section on their website to help us make progress on this difficult journey. We invite you to visit the website by clicking these links:

HISTORY (learn about the history of Residential Schools)

EXPRESSIONS OF APOLOGY (read the apologies made by the Catholic church over the years)

ACTIONS AND COMMITMENTS (read about actions already taken and so many more that are in planning stages and which still need to be acted upon)

We also invite you to join us on our St. Francis parish website this Monday July 26 for a short film produced by the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres and the National Film Board of Canada, called

Urban.Indigenous.Proud: Zaagi’idiwin This film is part of a series which you can watch, the links will be on our website on Monday.

SACRAMENT OF 1ST EUCHARIST This Sunday, July 25th, some of our

students preparing for the Sacrament of 1st Eucharist will share in the Lord’s Table for the first time at a special Mass in the

afternoon. These young candidates have been preparing and learning under very

difficult circumstances during the pandemic, and have had their sacrament postponed several times. Thank you to all the children and parents for your patience and hard work, and thank you Ruthann for adapting our program so many times and with great care. The remainder of the class will celebrate their 1st Eucharist in the fall. May our young people receiving the Eucharist for the first time feel Jesus dwelling within them in a new way, giving them strength and peace.
