Fr. Bill

Pope Francis has called for a synod on the synod nature of the Church. The word synod means journeying together. God journeys with us as we journey with one another. An-other word for this is accompa-niment. Accompaniment is

one of the values in our archdiocesan pastoral plan.

Accompaniment is how we can spiritually support others, especially those who are struggling. It requires that we are genuinely present with them, listening to them and supporting them with the goal of helping them hear God's call for them. God calls us to love all people and accept everyone in a way that invites them into a deeper relation-ship with Christ. By sharing Christ's love, we can help others understand his teaching and become disciples themselves.

Journeying together calls us to listen to one anoth-er and to the Lord. Pope Francis states that the synod process “was conceived as an exercise in mutual listening… conducted at all levels of the Church.” This listening is not about garnering opinions or taking a survey. It is a matter of listen-ing to the Holy Spirit as we listen to the experienc-es of one another, our hopes and dreams as well as that inner restlessness which “impels us to con-sider what it is best to do, what needs to be pre-served or changed.” Who are your journeying companions? Whom do you spiritual support and who spiritually supports you? In the parish, who journeys with you? Who is asking us to journey together, including those who may be outside the perimeter? What persons or groups are left on the margins? As the parish prepares of this “exercise in mutual listening,” identify for yourself those individuals that walk with you the journey of faith. Are they family members? Friends? Parishioners? Those you serve? How might you listen more intently to them?

Parishioner spotlight: Joe & Barbara N. share: We care for Creation in our own down-sized small yard, by growing a few veggies plus flowers and shrubs which attract the birds and pollinators and keep a shallow bowl of fresh water for them. It's really a joy to watch a bird

splashing its wings and insects stopping by for a sip. Rather than using an herbicide to control weeds, we use chip/bark. Large weedy patches can be well- controlled by first laying down thick newspaper, cardboard, burlap (coffee roasters give away whole pallets of their burlap bags) or even use old carpeting. A few inches of chip goes on top for a nicer appearance. We also volunteer at nearby Soos Creek Botanical Garden, 23 acres of God's creation to enjoy! SCBG is a free-entry non-profit garden, just a few miles from SJTB, with hun-dreds of trees, thousands of shrubs and perennials, a huge veggie garden where the produce goes to Food Banks, pea-cocks and doves in the aviary, benches to sit and relax, all built by Eagle Scouts. It's a great place to stroll and enjoy the wonder of what God has made, and given His people the commission to care for. Maybe we'll see you there? Thank you Joe & Barbara showing us ways to care for crea-tion both at home and in our local community! What you can do: Spend some time in nature and visit the Soos Creek Botanical Garden. They are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year. Enjoy the fall colors of the leaves changing and give thanks to God for blessing us with such wondrous Creation. The address is 29308 132nd Ave SE Auburn, WA and they are open from Wednesday-Saturday from 10 to 4. If you’re inspired, you can also sign up to vol-unteer for future growing seasons. Share your story: If you have ways you care for creation, let us know! Do you grow your own food? Drive electric or use mass transit? Recycle or compost? tinyurl.com/sjtbcreationcare Let us pray: “My dear friends, God’s creation is one and it is good. The concerns for nonviolence, sustainable develop-ment, justice and peace, and care for our environment are of vital importance for humanity. They cannot, however, be understood apart from a profound reflection on the innate dignity of every human life from conception to natural death: a dignity conferred by God himself and thus inviolable.” - Pope Benedict XVI

Survey: Share Your Advocacy Priorities With the Bishops: The Washington State Catholic Conference is the public policy voice of the bishops of Washington state, and the WSCC bishops would like to hear what your top Catholic advocacy priorities are. Participate in this brief survey to let the bishops know which policy priorities you are interested in advocating for. The sur-vey takes only about two minutes to complete. Thank you for making your voice heard and for participating in the survey. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8TV3YL7 English https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CRM5XV5 Spanish

As a Church and a nation, we are Polarized and divided. Pope Francis Challenges us to respond by build- ing a “better kind of politics, one truly at the service of the common good” (Fratelli Tutti, no.154). We are called to overcome division, promote encounters with our neighbors, and seek the truth. Join Catholics across the country in living out A Better Kind of Politics by pledging charity, clarity, and creativity to promote the common good. Civilize It: A Better Kind of Politics is a nonpartisan initiative from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops that seeks to assist Catholics to counter polarization and division in Church and society by following the example of the Good Samaritan, who challenges us to “become neighbors to all” (Fratelli Tutti, no.80). Along with a pledge to charity, clar-ity, and creativity, additional materials including an examina-tion of conscience , individual and communal reflection guides, action steps, and more, are available to empower individuals, families, and communities to be bridgebuilders across perspectives. Commit to A Better Kind of Politics and respond creatively to the problems facing our world at civi-lizeit.org.
