Stewardship: A Way of Life

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your

mind.” Matthew 22:37

Do you put other “god’s before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some person-al possession greater than your love for God? Do you re-ally recognize that everything you have and everything you are is a gift from God? The good news—it’s not too late to put God first in your life in all things

JUST A QUICK REMINDER: The Little Giving Crib will be set up until November 4th. We are doing very nicely so far, but we still need formula, diapers—they go through a lot of diapers as we all know— and we need baby clothing. We have two weeks to go and even if you can’t give at this time, please pray for all the newborns. Right after The Little Giving Crib, we will set up our mitten tree for our school-age children. Melanie Wentler

and the CCW group of ladies from our church will be promoting this dearly needed collection this year. Let’s get behind the ladies and children in a big way, as usual. Thanks—Jon Peterson

ST. MARY WIDOW SUPPORT GROUP: Any and all widows, of any length of time, are welcome and encouraged to attend the St. Mary Widow Support Group! 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 31 in the Ark Library. We plan to pray the rosary at this meeting, so if you have a rosary, please bring it with you. Otherwise, rosaries will be available for your use. See you there! HOLY HOUR AT ST. MARY, MILTON: Wednesday, November 1, following 8:30a.m. Mass. Please come and join us at this Holy Hour in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. We will pray the Glorious Mysteries with a focus on All Saints & All Souls Day. The Catholic Catechism concisely describes this communion among believers, by which we are connected to Christ and thus, to one another:

"Being more closely united to Christ, those who dwell in heaven fix the whole Church more firmly in holiness...They do not cease to intercede with the Father for us...So by their

fraternal concern is our weakness greatly helped."

"...as Christian communion among our fellow pilgrims brings us closer to Christ, so our communion with the saints joins us to Christ, from whom as from its fountain and head issues all grace, and the life of the People of God itself: We worship Christ as God's Son; we love the martyrs as the Lord's disciples and imitators, and rightly so because of their matchless devotion towards their king and master. May we also be their companions and fellow disciples.” (CCC 956, 957)

Confessions (all are welcome to attend at either parish): St. Mary on Tuesday from 5:00-6:00 p.m. St. Joseph every Saturday following mass Also by appointment with Fr. Dave

St. Joseph and St. Mary Knights of Columbus will hold their annual “Sentiments for Seminarians” drive for the benefit of seminarians in our diocese. It is a simple way to support priestly vocations. Since they don’t get paid or have jobs, it is hard for them to obtain even simple items. We are asking you to remember and encourage these young men who are dedicating their lives to serving God and us, by donating items for their use: Gas & gift cards: VISA, MC,

department stores, phone cards, restaurants (these are preferred items)

Toiletries (toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouth wash, dental floss shampoo, deodorant, soap, shaving supplies)

Wash cloths, towels Winter hats, gloves, scarves Paper towels, tissues, Ziploc bags

and small food storage containers Windex and cleaning supplies Christmas or greeting cards, Postage Stamps Office supplies (pens, pencils,

notebooks, paper and stationary)

Here’s how you can participate at each of our parishes: AT ST. JOSEPH: Place these donations in the designated box located at the front Church entrance from October 28-November 26.

AT ST. MARY: Containers will be available in the front entry from November 4-19 for donations.

The Catholic Church is constantly undergoing reformation, and that’s a good thing. It re-forms itself to be able to understand and deliver the saving message of Jesus Christ in the best possible way in the context of the times. Saints throughout the ages have been instruments of renewal in the pursuit of God, the fullness of all truth. Saint Odo focused on restoring traditional monastic life in the 10th century, beginning within the Benedictine order at Cluny Abbey. A century later, another monk from that same abbey, Saint Robert of Molesme, established a new monastery that would strictly observe the simple austere character of the original Rule of Saint Benedict, leading to the founding of the Cistercian Order. Saint Teresa of Avila sought to reform the Carmelite Order, to lead them back to the full observance of their original founding principles. Saint Francis of Assisi was famously told by the Lord to “rebuild my church” and his response was to initiate the mendicant orders which brought dedicated religious out of the monasteries and into the streets to preach and to adopt a lifestyle of poverty. Martin Luther was a monk in the Order of St. Augustine who also wanted to reform a church that was abusing its power and engaging in questionable

activities (such as the selling of indulgences). Unlike previous reformers who sought to preserve Christian unity, however, his actions fractured Christianity to the point where there are now over thirty thousand denominations all claiming

to be following Christ. Luther’s publication on October 31, 1517, of his 51 Theses disputing various Church teachings and practices connected with them is acknowledged as the beginning of the Protestant Reformation (called by that name because they “protested” against the papacy and rule within the Church). In the past, anniversaries of the Protestant Reformation were — let’s be honest — ugly. Protestants celebrated the rescue of the Christian faith from corruption and heresy, and Catholics lamented the event as a horrible calamity. Things are — and need to be — different for this 500th commemoration. Growing secularism has led Protestants and Catholics to throw off mutual animosity to band together amid a sea of indifference and wholesale rejection of Christianity. Denominational disagreements and Christian in-fighting are destructive and unhelpful in the face of rampant consumerism and the sexual revolution. Considering the last prayer of Jesus was that his followers “may all be one” (John 17), Christian disunity is a tragedy and a scandal. Let us pray for a “reformation” of our attitudes toward our separated brothers and sisters in Christ.

— Paul Schultz

I have extended an invitation to Rev. Rick LaBrecque who will come to St. Mary and St. Joseph parishes on the weekend of November 4 & 5. Father LaBrecque will speak to you about the work being done by Unbound (previously known as CFCA), and how this provides a trustworthy way to actively participate in the social outreach of the Catholic Church and answer the Gospel call to serve the poor. Founded by lay Catholics, Unbound is an organization that has served more than 600,000 children, youth and elderly in 19 developing countries since 1981—empowering them to make more choices in their lives, live with dignity and reach their potential. Unbound’s unique sponsorship program is highly personalized. It matches a child, youth or aging person at a project overseas with a sponsor in the US who cares about and encourages that person. With a monthly contribution, a sponsor helps to provide much-needed nourishing food, medical and dental care, the chance for a child to go to school, livelihood programs for families and much more. All of these efforts are directed at affirming the dignity of

every person in their local community. Father Rick was ordained in New Hampshire in 1967.

He is a priest for the Diocese of Charleston, SC. Most of his priesthood has been spent serving the Spanish-speaking community, and he found the experience of helping to introduce Hispanic ministry to a traditional US parish particularly rewarding. He has also served in vocations work, communications and continuing education, as well as organizing mission trips for parishioners to Honduras. Please join me in welcoming Father LaBrecque to our parishes. To learn more, call 800-875-6564 or visit www.unbound.org.
