“Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.”“Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.”“Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.”“Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.”

This Sunday the readings direct us to prayer. The holy Mass is the greatest prayer. And prayer is very important in our lives. But some of us look at prayer with a different look-ing glass. At times we justify not going to Sunday Mass. Prayer has become to get something from God. If we do not get it, we blame God. Here is the reason why some people neglect prayer in their lives. It will be nice to look at in the context of our bible and in the context of our faith.

The first reading deals with Abraham, who is our father in faith, and the visitors. The reading tells that the visitors walked, but the Lord remained with Abraham. Abraham went to the Lord and asked, “Will you sweep away the inno-cent with the guilty?” It is not in tune with God’s nature. So Abraham proposes to God, “If you find fifty innocent people in the city, would you wipe out the place, rather than spare it for the sake of the fifty innocent people with in it?” The Lord said, “If I find fifty innocent people in city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.” For Abraham feels it is not just to treat the innocent and guilty alike. Abraham still insisted what if there are only forty, what if there only thirty, what if there are only twenty, and what if there are only ten? The Lord replied, “For the sake of those ten, I will not destroy it.”

What is the lesson to draw from the first reading? The lesson is to pray constantly without fear. Prayer is between you God. Who is God to us? God is our Father. God is our helper. God is our Redeemer and Savior. God is a person to us. We should learn to talk to God as Abraham did in to-day’s first reading. Let God become a person to us. The Lord said many times in the bible, “Ask you shall receive, seek you shall find, knock the door will be opened to you.” God has his time. At times we think that our prayers are not an-swered. It is not true. God always answers our prayers. Sometimes we may not like the answer because it was not what you asked for. But God knows everything. He gives what you really need. God knows what is good for us.

Now let us look at the Gospel. The Gospel reads that our Lord Jesus was praying in a secluded place. The disciples saw Jesus was praying. They wanted to do the same. When Jesus finished his prayers, the disciple approached Jesus and asked, “Lord teach us to pray just as John taught disciples?” Then Jesus taught them the Our Father. It is very familiar to all us and all Christians. This is the prayer which we are taught as children. For Catholic there is another prayer we are taught as children, that is the Hail Mary. The Our Father has two parts. At times we forget that reality. The first part is to acknowledge God’s sanctity and his holiness. And our duty is to worship him. The second part is to ask God to bless us with our daily needs and beg him to forgive our sins. Through an example Jesus is telling us to keep praying.

I want to thank our few good people who were able to come and help us with little jobs in the Church. We hoped that we could finish planting the trees too. But it did not happen. I want to give a special thanks to Everett Held, who is our long time care taker of the Church, to be there and supervise the job. It was a pleasant day. We enjoyed being together and doing something beautiful for God. May the Father of our Lord Jesus and our Father bless you and your families.

Fr. John
