Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I want to thank all the volunteers who planned and implemented this past weekend’s event with Sr. Helen Prejean, the founder of “Survive” a victim’s advocacy group in New Orleans and a great champion against the death penalty and with Karen Daniel, director, Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University. Both events, the one that took place mid-afternoon, attended by students in grades 7th to 12th, and the evening key note address by Sr. Helen Prejean were Spirit filled. I was personally moved to see well-behaved students keenly listening to the presentations and asking

questions. If you attended one of the two presentations, you know what I am trying to say. I want to particularly single out Shelby Boblick, our Pastoral Associate who coordinated all the events and to Gail Rohmann who directed the combined Gospel Choir concert featuring voices from our own choirs, St. Martin de Porres in Chicago and St. Eulalia in Maywood. Also, I am very pleased and grateful for all those who attended and even those who were not able to attend because of prevailing circumstances. The events showed that the Gospel of Jesus is shining everywhere and that we should never be shy to use our God-given gifts to reach others. In our Gospel today, Jesus accompanied by many people were travelling through Jericho to Jerusalem for the celebra-tion of the feast of the Passover, so was a carnival-like atmosphere. Vendors had booths set up along the roadway to attract business from people passing by. They were selling and shouting to the people walking by. A man named Bartimaeus was sitting beside the roadway begging. Bartimaeus was blind. He didn't have anything to sell; he was just calling out for mercy from those who walked by. In that society, there was no welfare or social security; if you couldn't work and didn't have someone to take care of you, you had to beg for money and food to eat. It was a very sad situation for Bartimaeus. When he heard that Jesus was walking in front of him, Bartimaeus began to cry out to him, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.” Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, there are two kinds of blindness. Physical blindness and spiritual blindness. Bartimaeus was physically blind, but he had enough spiritual vision to break from his past and embrace the power of Jesus Christ. Are you bold enough to accept the fact that Jesus Christ is the son of God as did Bartimaeus? Are you sensitive to the needs of the less privileged members of our society? Let us not be like the crowds that were impeding Bartimaeus from reaching Jesus Christ. All we need to do is to show love and compassion.

—Fr. George Omwando

Psalm — The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy (Psalm 126). Our Living Word: For Reflection

Take time each week to reflect upon the CURRENT Sunday’s Scripture. We are fed by the Word so we can live out the Word.

OCTOBER 25, 2015 30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

When I cry out to the Lord in my

prayer, I ask for . . .

The Lord answers my cry by . . .

Each week “introductions” to the 1st and 2nd Readings for the Upcoming Sunday are offered. Their sole purpose is to help us all of us “receive” and “hear” the word of God.

NOVEMBER 1, 2015 ALL SAINTS DAY

First Reading: Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14 The Book of Revelation is not intend-ed to predict actual people and events in future times. The author was con-cerned only about people and events in that time and was given no privi-leged information about the future. In this passage, the author encourages people of that time by presenting a vision of God’s people enjoying heavenly life.

Second Reading: 1 John 3:1-3 In our first reading we will have heard symbolic images of what heaven will be like. The author of our second reading also talks about what heaven will be like, but without attempting to give us any specific details.

“Time Table Talk” for families

(“Families” are what you define family to be!)

This is based upon the reading from Matthew 5:1-12. Here you go! Today’s great feast is about heroes and heroines. The Gospel is full of “be” “attitudes.”

1. How can I (we) adjust our atti-tudes to live more conscious of these Beatitudes?

2. Who is your favorite saint? Can you share details about that saint’s life?

Religious Education

Registration is always open. If you have a child/children who you would like to

register, contact the Rectory, leave your name and number and someone will call you. It is never too late.

Every Tuesday at 9:30 am here at St. Catherine of Siena- St. Lucy’s Rectory.

And Let It Begin With Me….

It’s the age-old struggle---the roar of the crowd on one side and the voice of your conscience on the other.

—General Douglas MacArthur

School News

Our Student Government is getting ready for action. Elections will be held this upcoming week. Stop by the church on Monday afternoon at 12:30 for a chance to hear our candi-dates present themselves.

Even though Halloween is on Satur-day this year, our littlest students will still get to enjoy themselves. They’ll parade around the school on Friday morning, in all their clever costumes. We would like to thank our wonder-ful volunteers – Bill and Barbara Cragg and Fran Sullivan – for their time and patience at our school.

They are able to give our children that one-on-one time that helps so much with their studies. If you are interested in helping as well, we wel-come you with open arms.
