It is a packed but very interesting programme which will include attendance at the general audience with Pope Francis as well as meeting as with vari- ous cardinals in the Curia on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, then with Italians MPs on Thursday. Promises to be interesting! Since I did my 8 day silent retreat at the end of July I have been asked so many ques- tions about it. How did you get? What did you do all day? Wasn’t it boring? One aspect of being on retreat is to learn about Mindfulness - being present now before God and before life. Many people today are interested in 'Mindfulness' and finding how helpful it is for spiritual, physical and psychological well-being. Mindful- ness has long been part of our Christian mystical tradition of prayer and medita- tion. The 'Grace of the present moment' as mentioned by many of our Saints, is one example of the great wisdom in our Christian experience which is now being discovered afresh. A Mindfulness retreat in the Christian Tradition for all Parish Adult Faith Formation Leaders, Parish Pastoral Coun- cil Members, Readers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Volunteers and anyone who would like to learn more about their own faith and themselves. Facilitators: Mgr Malachy Keegan and Birute Briliute Ph.D. Where? Nazareth House, 169-175 Hammersmith Rd, London Rd, W6 8DB When? Sat 9th Nov 2013 10.00am - 3.00pm Places are limited and booking is required. For further details and registration please contact living- [email protected] or call at 020 7931 6078. Suggested do- nation is £12 to cover the costs. Tea/coffee will be provided. Please bring your own lunch. This retreat will include Buddhist and Cognitive therapeutic insights within a framework of Christian belief and prac- tice. There will be opportunities to try different ways of en- gaging, as individuals, with our minds and hearts, our thoughts and feelings. It will be a quiet, gentle and contem- plative retreat. There will be periods of quiet to allow par- ticipants to practice Mindfulness and to enable us to be in touch with the Lord and with our true selves. The stresses of modern life can often leave us feeling frag- mented, anxious and dispirited. This can result in serious consequences for our health and happiness. The practice of Mindfulness, allows us to become more aware of God's loving presence in our lives and brings deep peace and great joy. Stress, chronic pain, panic attacks, insomnia, fatigue, high blood pressure, headaches can all be reduced by the practice of Mindfulness. Why not try it? In this Year of Faith - Why I am Catholic

This week’s Holy Apostles’ Parishioner Story: I am a cradle catholic, born to strict Catholic parents and baptised as a baby.

This was pre-Vatican II when the mass was in Latin, with the priest having his back to the congregation. The message that I received from my parents, that was reinforced at a convent school, was of an awful and judgemental God. I can remember counting my sins on my fingers lest I forgot any prior to confession. No wonder then, that I went to church. I had to. My prayers were said by rote.

Of course things did change after Vatican II for the better, but by that time I was experiencing mental health problems with a prolonged bout of depression. People felt a long way away and I couldn't explain how I felt or reach out to them. Prayer seemed meaningless; the mass something detached. After God seemed absent and I eventually stopped going to church, I wondered who is there for me. This indeed was dark night of the soul.

Thankfully I had a dear mother-in-law who unbeknown to me was praying hard for me. I heard later that one day after praying she knew I would recover.

As the dark cloud lifted I felt strongly the presence of God and how he seemed to be working in my life, and it seemed natural to return to church. I joined a prayer Group that deepened my faith and introduced me to the wider community of the church. Now I experience a loving and accessible God who is always there for me and helping me every minute of the day. The mass is meaningful, the readings pertinent and it is a joy to receive Communion (now under both kinds).

I realised that being a catholic is not just going to church and saying my prayers. It

is knowing that God is with me and helping me every minute of every day.

Moreover I am part of a local community who believe what I believe and whenever

I go anywhere in London, Great Britain or the world, I will always meet people of

the same faith.

During the Year of Faith, it is good for us to hear about one and other’s

experience. Each submission should be 400-500 words and will be published

anonymously. Please send yours to Fr Pat or Judy. ONLY 2 MORE

WEEKS LEFT — PLEASE SUBMIT YOURS NOW. THANKS
