STEWARDSHIP RELFECTIONS
“...for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” LUKE 18:14 Pride and ego is the root cause of most of our sins. Thinking your time is so valuable, your talent is better than anyone else and your money gives you status is another way of making those things “gods” before God. Remember all those gifts were God-given. Instead we should be humbled by God’s abundant generosity and filled with gratitude.
DYNAMIC CATHOLIC, ALIVE! Repentance. Repentance means more than merely saying “I’m sorry” for something you’ve done wrong. Saying “I’m sorry” and meaning it is, of course, an important step. But real “contrition” is about doing something that will make amends for the conse-quences of the wrong itself. Once we’re sorry, we have to resolve not to repeat the wrong and resolve to repair the wrong as much as is possible.
PARISH PURGATORIAL SOCIETY (PPS) First, what is it? It is a way to have loved ones en-rolled in Masses for a whole year, November to No-vember. For a small donation, or none at all, you may enroll loved ones in our PPS. Some people list their beloved departed by family name, e.g. the Doe Family, the Byrnes Family, etc. Second, what’s the bang for the buck? From No-vember 2, 2015 to October 2016, we have offered over 150 PPS Masses. Given that we still have October Masses to add to that, it is easy to see that amounts to over 13.5 Masses each month (150/11) or over 3 each week (150/48). Third, how do I get in on this deal? Simply use one of the PPS envelopes found at church to write the names/family names of the beloved departed for whom you wish to offer Masses and make a donation. Then get it back to me, via collection basket, USPS, or rec-tory drop-box. Easy-peasey.
OUR LADY OF FATIMA STATUE The World Apostolate of Fatima’s Centennial U.S. Tour for Peace is coming to five parishes in the St. Louis area. This historic tour, marking the 100th anni-versary of the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima will feature the world famous international pilgrim statue on a two year tour of the United States. It will be an extraordinary occasion of healing, hope and grace. The closest parish hosting this statue will be St. Gabriel on Saturday, November 12th, with viewing all day from 8:00 a.m. until after the 5:00 p.m. Mass. After that Mass, a candlelight procession will be held around the neighborhood. Make plans to attend!

AFFTON FOOD PANTRY The food pantry is in need of meal sup-plements such as Stove Top, Ham-burger and Tuna Helper, Lipton or Rice-a-Roni sides, boxed potatoes, etc. Place your donations in the grey bins.
PARISH PICNIC WINNERS Congratulations to the following win-ners of Baskets of Cheer at the parish picnic: Dorothy Beckerle, Connie Gar-ner, JoAnn Bray, Terri Diliberto, Marian Kramp, Pat Bohlinger, Norma Kruse, and Teri Scheipeter.
CATECHESIS SUNDAY On Catechesis Sunday, October 23rd, there will be a short DVD presentation, WHY DO I NEED THE CHURCH? It will be presented after the 8:30 a.m. Mass in the parish hall. Some say “I’m okay with Jesus, I just don’t like His Church.” You cannot love the King and reject His kingdom, the body of Christ, the communion of saints. Jesus calls us to salvation through communal worship in his Church and the Sacraments His Church dispenses in His name!
DAY OF RECOLLECTION-NOVEMBER 5 The day will begin with Holy Mass at 8:00 a.m. Fr. Rich Buhler, S.J. former director of White House Retreats, will be celebrant and will lead us in two conferences, one at 9:00 a.m. and then 11:00 a.m. Between conferences, there will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, time for adoration and si-lent prayer, First Saturday devotions, Holy Rosary, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We will close with Benediction at 11:45 a.m. Please invite your friends from other parishes—all are welcome!
AN EVENING OF FAITH, FELLOWSHIP,
AND FUNDRAISING The National Catholic Partner-ship on Disability presents: “An Evening of Faith, Fellowship and Fundraising.” The evening will include a special presentation from Gus Lloyd, host of “Seize the Day,” the morning radio show on Sirius XM's The Catholic Chan-nel, author and speaker. Also spe-cial messages from John Foppe, Executive Director of the St. Vin-cent de Paul Society of St. Louis and author John O'Leary. The event takes place Thursday, No-vember 3rd, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at St. Louis University High School, 4970 Oakland Ave. Please regis-ter at www.ncpd.org
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As you know, the devastation that has been caused in Haiti and other areas of the Caribbean by Hurricane Matthew is catastrophic. With as many as 900 killed and tens of thousands left home-less, we must react quickly to provide what help we can. We have a special responsibility to help our suffering brothers and sisters who live on this island so close to our own country. Our first and most important response is to pray. Even as these families are mourn-ing the tragic loss of life and of their
homes, they are also struggling to find ways to survive. The most basic human needs, food, water, and shelter, are hard to find. We must pray that our Lord protect them and provide them with comfort and assistance. In addition to prayer, we also have to provide material help. I have asked your pastor to conduct a collection at your parish for this purpose. All money raised through this collection will be sent through Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to help the people suffering because of this storm. Through CRS, the international humanitarian agency representing the U.S. Catholic Church, we are responding even now to the needs of our brothers and sisters. More help is urgently needed. Thank you for your generous response to this urgent request. I am proud of the culture of stewardship that we have in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, as we always respond generously to those in need. As always, I will keep you and your intentions in my prayers. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson, Archbishop of St. Louis
