From the Pastor

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 26, 2014

"You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments." These words of Jesus in our Gospel today can sum up our mission as Church. It also calls to mind our basic mission as St. Vincent de Paul Parish. As we reflect today at mass on the activities and finances of the parish, I invite you to reflect on how you are living out this commandment to love God and to love neighbor, and how we are doing collectively as a parish. To remind ourselves about our particular parish mission and goals, today we also re-publish the documents from our Parish Transformation meetings this past spring. May we always be aware of our love of God and neighbor in all that we do as people of faith.

St. Vincent de Paul Parish Mission Narrative We, the people of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, seek to create a community that reflects our patron saint’s mission, nourishing our sisters and brothers who are poor, whether it be in mind, body, or spirit. St. Vincent de Paul reminds us that “charity is the cement which binds communities to God, and persons to one another.” Our many outreach programs and our rich liturgies give life to his words, calling us to action with zealous spirits, humble hearts, and “the strength of our arms and the sweat of our brows.” As followers of the Vincentian mission, our faith in God calls us to be good stewards of compassion, service, and prayer. We have a genuine desire to grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ and one another. This is visible through our missionary spirit to nourish our sisters and brothers in need, just as the Eucharist nourishes our spirits and souls. Christ calls us to serve in His name and see His face in everyone we meet. His words in Matthew 25:40 are central to this idea: “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers or sisters of mine, you did for me.” We don’t just share the love of God with our sisters and brothers in need, but we also receive the love of God in our mutual giving. Our vibrant parish extends beyond the ornate high altar, grand pipe organ and stained glass windows. It includes a diverse community of young professionals, families, and individuals with both developing and sustained roots. We work together with DePaul University in our common Vincentian mission in many ways, including liturgy and education. Through the teachings of St. Vincent de Paul, we seek to provide relevant opportunities for lifelong faith formation to assist growth as followers and disciples of Jesus Christ, both individually and as a community.

News & Notes

We gain strength from our inspirational liturgies, worshiping with both contemplative and contemporary music. Our sacramental ministries include captivating homilies which urge us to live out the Gospel through our faith and deeds. Whether we celebrate the feast of St. Vincent de Paul in September, gather around the Advent wreath, or wash each other’s feet on Holy Thursday, our prayer at Mass sends us forth each week with a deeper faith rooted in serving all God’s people. As we continue to grow, we must encourage each other to act as spiritual stewards, advocating for those in need while creating a sense of compassion and justice on this human journey. At its core, our dynamic urban parish inspires us to search for God and discover our faith in Scripture, service, prayer, and relationship. Our Vincentian identity also encourages us to share the Good News of Christ’s love with our friends and neighbors, making the Reign of God more present in our midst.

St. Vincent de Paul Parish Action Plan

Objective: Develop deeper understanding in our parish of our Vincentian identity and faith. Action: Integrate Vincentian themes and topics into homilies one Sunday per month. Action: Create a bulletin and website column featuring a current parishioner, “Vincent’s People.” Action: Identify opportunities and/or develop programs to collaborate with DePaul University. Action: Raise awareness and appreciation of Vincentian history through the art and music in our

parish. Objective: Create opportunities for parishioners to develop relationships with Christ and one

another. Action: Establish a mentoring program for new members by pairing them with current members

of the parish. Action: Develop a welcoming program. Action: Develop events appropriate for bringing people together, such as affinity groups or like-

interest groups. Action: Develop and evaluate procedures, communication and processes among existing

commissions and groups. Objective: Empower or inspire parishioners to engage more fully in their own journey of discipleship. Action: Strengthen service opportunities with our local Vincentian family and institutions (e.g.,

DePaul Center, Marillac House) Action: Expand sign-up program for existing volunteer opportunities and/or expand our parish

outreach services to provide more opportunities. Action: Provide opportunities for prayer and reflection after volunteer service and hold volunteer

appreciation gatherings. Action: Include prayer before all events and meetings.

Are You an Automatic Giver?

Automatic withdrawal for your Sunday offertory contribution is secure and convenient: No need to write checks or to bring cash to church. Peace of mind knowing that your contribution is received, even if you are out of town. Credit card processing fees are only 2%. (Factor this in to your donation to make your

dollars go even farther!) The latest encryption technology is more secure than writing checks. All contributions are recorded on your bank statement with the date of settlement.

With automatic withdrawal, you can still participate in the Sunday offering. A Call for Volunteers in this Season for Giving Thanks!

We have a wonderful opportunity to advance and bring life to our parish mission through volunteering with our extended Vincentian family at the St. Vincent de Paul Center (Halsted & Webster) on November 15th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. (with set-up and sorting nights on Nov. 13th & 14th from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. / dinner provided). We are looking for 30 volunteers for the November 15th meal and event, as well as several others to help sort and set up on November 13th & 14th. This annual Homeless Outreach Lunch, which also benefits many of the men and women who come to our own parish soup kitchen and food pantry, offers us the chance to serve with our extended Vincentian family. As followers of the Vincentian mission our faith in God calls us to be good stewards of compassion, service and prayer. We are reminded from our mission statement that Christ calls us to serve in His name and see His face in everyone we meet. His words in Matthew 25:40 (which was so personally vital and important to St. Vincent de Paul in his own work and service) are central to this idea: “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Come join with other parishioners in this special volunteer experience. The Homeless Luncheon services include a holiday meal, the distribution of winter clothes, sleeping bags and items to help our neediest community members get through a Chicago winter. Other services (podiatry, dental, etc.) are on site with referrals to additional off-site services. Thank you for your interest and response! Please contact Joyce Walsh at [email protected] or 773-528-6690, to get a full information sheet and registration link.

This Old Church

Join Great Books and God at 6:30pm on Tuesday, November 18th when we meet to discuss our eighth book, Fr. Michael Crosby’s Repair My House: Becoming a “Kindom” Catholic (Orbis Books, 2012). “Repair my house” was the instruction that St. Francis of Assisi heard from a crucifix in a ruined chapel, inspiring his radical mission of church renewal. Today some say the Catholic Church confronts the need for a similar mission of repair and renewal. In response, Fr. Michael Crosby sees a challenge to the Church to return to the basic message of Jesus Christ, a message that is supported, not

contradicted, by advances in science and cosmology. Crosby envisions a new way of being Catholic and a set of practices that draws on the contemplative, compassionate, and life-giving spirit of Christ’s Kingdom… as he calls it, the “Kindom.” Great Books and God is an “open enrollment” book club. Members choose the books we read and can join at any time. If you have questions, contact Dean at [email protected] or just drop in on Tuesday, November 18th in the Parish Center at 6:30 p.m. for discussion and light snacks. Bring the book. Bring a friend.

Baptism Please contact Mary Jo Polark ([email protected]) to register for baptism preparation, which is held on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. You may attend this class either before or after your child is born. Following preparation and after your child is born, please contact Mary Jo to schedule a baptism date. Baptisms are celebrated on the 4th Sunday of the month at 11:30 a.m., or during a regular Sunday mass. Baptism is not celebrated during the Lenten season.

Marriage Please contact Mary Jo Polark ([email protected]) to discuss the celebration of the sacrament of marriage here at St. Vincent’s, or concerning preparation and prenuptial matters if you are getting married in another parish. For baptized Catholics, marriage is celebrated within a Catholic church in the presence of a priest or deacon. The first item to plan is the selection of a date and time. In order to celebrate the sacrament of marriage at St. Vincent, one needs to be a registered parishioner for four months prior to discussion of a date. DePaul University faculty, staff, students, and alumni may also celebrate their wedding here, provided either the bride, groom, or both are Roman Catholic, registered at a parish and actively engaged in the practice of their faith. Weddings are celebrated on Saturdays only, at 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. Weddings are not celebrated during the season of Lent, Holy Week or Saturdays that conflict with other parish events. Mary Jo confirms all reservations for weddings.
