    Reflections on Today’s Readings https://www.loyolapress.com/our-catholic-faith/liturgical-

    year/sunday-connection/30th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-c-sunday-connection

    First Reading Sirach 35:12-14,16-18

God hears the prayer of the poor.

    Responsorial Psalm Psalm 34:2-3,17-18,19, 23

The Lord hears and answers the cry of the poor.

    Second Reading 2 Timothy 4:6-8,16-18

Paul perseveres in faith, confident that God will rescue him.

    Gospel Reading Luke 18:9-14

Jesus tells the parable of the proud Pharisee who prayed from his self-importance and the tax collector who

    prayed humbly.

    Background on the Gospel Reading

The second parable that Jesus tells in Luke 18 addresses attitude in prayer. In contrasting the prayer of the Pharisee with the prayer of the tax collector, Jesus

teaches his disciples to pray in humility before God. Jesus again surprises his listeners by showing the tax

collector as the example of faith, rather than the Pharisee. Remember that Pharisees were members of a

sect of Judaism active in Jesus' time. They taught an oral interpretation of the Law of Moses as the basis for

Jewish piety. If anyone would be a model for prayer, a Pharisee was a likely candidate. In contrast, Jesus offers

the tax collector as a model for prayer. Tax collectors were collaborators with the Roman authorities in a

system that allowed the tax collectors to line their own pockets by charging in excess of the defined taxes. Yet,

in this parable, Jesus offers the humility of the tax collector as a model for the prayer of a disciple. The

parable reminds us that when we pray, we must remember our need for God in our lives. If we are too

full of ourselves, there is too little room for God's grace to work in us.

    Luke/Lucas 18:9-14

Something Funny/ Algo Gracioso (Job 8:21 “He will yet fill your mouth with laughter,

    and your lips with shouting.”)

A church's bell ringer passed away. The church posted the job opening in the local newspaper's classified ads and a

man came in with no arms wanting the job. The clergy weren't sure he could do it, but he convinced them to let him try it. They climbed the bell tower and the guy ran

toward the bell and hit it with his head, producing a beautiful melody. They gave him the job on the spot. The next day he went to ring the bell, tripped, bounced off the

bell and fell to the sidewalk below. Two priests were walking past. One asked, "Do you know this guy?" The

other responded, "No, but his face rings a bell." The next day, the dead man's twin brother came in for the

again vacant bell ringer position. He also had no arms. The clergy led him up to the bell tower, where he ran at the

bell, tripped and fell to the sidewalk below. The same two priests walked up. The first asked, "Do you know him?"

The second responded, "No, but he's a dead ringer for his brother."

All Saints Day Feast Day: November 1

This feast day grew out of the love and devotion of God's people. The Church chose this feast to honor God in His saints, in whom He has shown Himself so wonderful. We thank God as the creator of all holiness and for the graces He has showered upon them.

The communion of saints is made up of all true children of God. They may belong to:

the militant Church on earth the suffering Church in purgatory or the triumphant Church in heaven

Some saints needed to pass through purgatory to be purified before they were fit for the Lord's presence. They stayed there until they were ready to see God. They are with him now forever.

A few saints have their own feast day but as there are not enough days in the year we cannot celebrate a special day for each of the saints.

Some stayed close to God all their lives. Others found Him along the way. Some led good lives without too much difficulty. Others made big mistakes, but were truly sorry for their sins and drew close to God.

They made it! We celebrate their journey that led to eternal happiness

with God. We celebrate our own family members, relatives, neighbors and friends whom we believe are in heaven.

Today we can rejoice in our hearts with all the saints in heaven. We can make up our own prayer to them, thanking them for the witness of their lives.

We can thank them too, for helping us overcome our difficulties and temptations. We ask them to help us on our own journey through life so we can be saints like them and go to heaven.

    Feast Day: November 2

This feast day is one of the most loving celebrations in the Church's liturgy.

It is the day that we especially remember all those who have passed from this life into the next.

Today we stop to remember all who have died especially our relatives and friends.

We pray for those who taught us good things and made sacrifices for us.

We pray for those who prayed for us while they were on this earth.

We pray for the most forgotten souls.

We pray for those who had great responsibilities while they were on earth.

We think of those holy souls in purgatory and we realize that they are saved. Now they wait, being purified, until the moment when they can be with God, face to face.

We can offer the sacrifice of the Mass and pray for these suffering souls in purgatory to hasten their journey to God.

Eternal rest, grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

  • 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time~ 30 domingo de tiempo ordinario 2019 (Year C/ Ano C) Saints of the Week/ Santos de La Semana

St. Simon and St. Jude/ San Simon y Judas Tadeo

    (October/Octubre 28)

These two apostles of Jesus are honored on the same day. St. Simon was called "the zealous one" because he had so much devotion to the Jewish law. Once he had been called by the Lord to be an apostle, he gave his heart and his energy to preaching the Gospel. With the other apostles, he received the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost. Then it is believed that he went to Egypt to preach the faith. Afterward he went to Persia with the apostle St. Jude, and the two of them were martyred there.

St. Jude is sometimes called Thaddeus, which means "the brave one." It was he who asked the Lord a famous question at the Last Supper. Jesus had said: "He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him." And St. Jude wanted to know: "Lord, how is it that you are about to manifest yourself to us and not to the world?" Jesus gave him the answer: "If anyone love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our abode with him."

St. Jude is sometimes called the saint of "desperate or impossible cases." People pray to him when things seem hopeless. Often God answers their prayers through the intercession of this beloved apostle.

Reflection: Simon was known as the "Zealous," and Jude was called the "Brave." Let us pray for their missionary courage and love in our own lives.

    http://www.holyspiritinteractive.net/dailysaint/october/1028.asp

    Next Week’s Readings

Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 153 Reading 1 WIS 11:22-12:2 Before the LORD the whole universe is as a grain from a balance or a drop of morning dew come down upon the earth. But you have mercy on all, because you can do all things; and you overlook people's sins that they may repent. For you love all things that are and loathe nothing that you have made; for what you hated, you would not have fashioned. And how could a thing remain, unless you willed it; or be preserved, had it not been called forth by you? But you spare all things, because they are yours, O LORD and lover of souls, for your imperishable spirit is in all things! Therefore you rebuke offenders little by little, warn them and remind them of the sins they are committing, that they may abandon their wickedness and believe in you, O LORD! Responsorial Psalm PS 145:1-2, 8-9, 10-11, 13, 14 R. (cf. 1) I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. I will extol you, O my God and King, and I will bless your name forever and ever. Every day will I bless you, and I will praise your name forever and ever. R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones bless you. Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might. R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. The LORD is faithful in all his words and holy in all his works. The LORD lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. Reading 2 2 THES 1:11-2:2 Brothers and sisters: We always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose

and every effort of faith, that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, in accord with the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ. We ask you, brothers and sisters, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him, not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a "spirit," or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand. Alleluia JN 3:16 R. Alleluia, alleluia. God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might have eternal life. R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel LK 19:1-10 At that time, Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said, "Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house." And he came down quickly and received him with joy. When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, "He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner." But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost."

    Primera lectura

    Sab 11, 22–12, 2
