  • It is said that listening to this quartet equals a royal treat for the soul. Each appearance drawscrowds of fans to prestigious concert halls, and this time, they will beckon the audiences of theChristopher Summer Festival. In the music world, the Silesian String Quartet is known as a contemporary music expert (of the300 works that make up their repertoire, 200 were written no later than in the 20th century),having performed over 40 world premieres, most of which were dedicated to the performersthemselves. And that’s probably not at all surprising, as the collective performs each work with such deepmusical feeling, stylistic precision, and quickly creates impressive, dramatic musical dialogues.Harnessing the power of music, the performers will paint an impressive landscape of the Balticcountries in our very own St. Catherine’s Church.

  • Perhaps Lithuania cannot boast of gold deposits or other natural resources from the depths of theEarth, yet we are certainly not short of gems. And one shines with particular brilliance – theworld-acclaimed Dagilėlis Boys and Youth Choir.Dagilėlis Day has been declared in honour of this collective in Baltimore (USA), in China theyare known as the “choir of angels”, and in Germany – as the “Lithuanian Thomaner” (Thomaneris one of the most famous and oldest boys choirs in the world, performing for over 800 years). The choir’s laurels number 12 of the highest international competition awards. And what is thesecret of their success? “I’ve heard many choirs, whose music sounds clear, but that’s all. A glass jar also makes a nicesound, but it is empty. Our choir on the other hand knows how to fill music with emotions.Sometimes it’s even quite sad to see how moved people are leaving our concerts”, says thedirector of Dagilėlis, Remigijus Adomaitis, and does not doubt that shivers will run down yourspine as well. Programme - S. Dobrogosz, L. Vilkončius, B. Gorbulskis, J. Kern, and others.

What becomes of a child protege? The answer to this question can be found at the concert of Danish organist Jakob Lorentzen.Aged barely 14, he became the country’s youngest professional organist, yet he did not rest on his laurels. To the contrary, he graduated from the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music and continued his studies in Paris with renowned performers such as Christine Paraschos, Pierre

NORDIC ORGANDUO (Holland):ABRAM BEZUIJEN (organ)JEE YOUNG PARK (organ)

The performers Abram Bezuijen and Jee Young Park deny the belief that the grand organ is an individualist’s instrument and admit that performing music together is indeed a lot of fun. True, the view of two playing one organ is a little out of the ordinary, and the preparation is more complicated, but the results are definitely worth it.This duet perfectly meanders between tradition and new ideas, so their concert programmes are always intriguing both in terms of content and execution. This concert in Vilnius promises to be no exception. You’ll hear duets and solo pieces, all surprising in their sound. Programme - J. S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Norwegian folk music

NEW YORK – VILNIUS A piano recital

    IEVA JOKŪBAVIČIŪTĖ (piano, USA)

New York – Vilnius: this is a route pianist Ieva Jokubavičiūtė does not travel as often as she’d like. That’s why every performance she makes in her homeland is a celebration – not just for audiences, but for her as well: “I am very glad to have the opportunity to play in concert in Vilnius, to share with audiences those works closest to my heart”, the performer admits.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJ3f6lDg3yw

  • I. Jokubavičiūtė has arranged an impressive programme: the piano sonatas of W. A. Mozart and R. Schumann will draw a historic line between two epocjs, captivating miniatures will paint in sound location landscapes, a night’s secret will be transformed into a musical journal... The mostinfluential publications in the world do not hide their sympathies for this performer either: “admirable technique, a subtle temperament, and convincing insight” (The New York Times), “penetrative and witty” (The Washington Post). How will she do at winning over your hearts?

  • This had been confirmed by jazz vocalist Viktorija Gečytė, who promises to share what she findsimportant and dear in this concert: “We’ll play a little bit of everything: interpretations of jazzstandards, as well as our original works. It is inspired by the Lithuanian landscape, folk songs, sothere’ll also be works in Lithuanian”. The singer will be joined on the stage by elite instrumentalists. Each is a patriot and virtuoso oftheir instrument, barely able to fit the awards and merits onto one page. So we’ll just mentionthat the group will feature the legendary double bassist Gene Perla, a stage partner of NinaSimone, Elvin Jones, Sarah Vaughan and other grands, with more to be revealed in an upcomingbook about the musician...

MY SPANISH BRAHMS Hungarian Dances in a Spanish style

Performers: ALEXEY FILIMONOV (piano, composer, Russia)YURY BOBYLEV (flamenco guitar, arrangements, Russia)GREGORY VOSKOBOYNIK (double bass, arrangements)

Can you guess what the German composer Johannes Brahms, the fiery flamenco and Hungarian dances have in common? Here’s one answer: J. Brahms created “Hungarian Dances” based on traditional music, while the pianist A. Filimonov transferred them onto a flamenco fabric.Asked what inspired this kind of experiment, the performer boldly replies that Spain and Hungary share common gypsy roots...Come and hear and see for yourselves if this theory is correct. While we promise an exceptional evening, full of inspirational rhythms, melodies dear to the heart, and original musical solutions.

    INTERWAR PIANO PHENOMENONA piano recital

    GABRIELIUS ALEKNA (piano, USA)

A composer who outlived his era and a pianist not afraid of musical challenges. That’s how you could describe this intriguing evening, during which pianist Gabrielius Alekna will be playing works by Vytautas Bacevičius.V. Bacevičius was one of the most original and progressive composers in interwar Lithuania. Hiswork is overwhelmingly considered the golden classic of Lithuanian modernism, and is not intended for carefree relaxation – neither for the audience, much less for the performer, of whom special concentration is demanded. But it appears this does not frighten G. Alekna, quite the opposite. According to the Fanfare magazine, Alekna is considered a critical figure in the revival of this composer’s music. The performer’s ability to masterfully perform exceptionally difficult works has delighted not only critics, but Grammy-nominated music producers as well.

Will he delight you also? Come and find out!

    VOICES UNLIMITEDWorld Choirs Championship winners

VOICES UNLIMITED Male vocal ensemble (Austria):MORITZ GUTTMANN (tenor), CHRISTIAN HOLLERWEGER (tenor)CHRISTOPH MOSER (tenor), GEORG DÜRNBERGER (tenor)PAUL DÜRNBERGER (baritone), THOMAS SCHNEIDER (baritone)LUKAS OBERHAMMER (bass), THOMAS RAMMINGER (bass)

Eight male voices instead of an orchestra. This is no fantasy story. This is the pride of Austria, the winners of the World Choirs Championship – the Voices Unlimited vocal ensemble. When these a cappella (vocals without accompaniment) enthusiasts gathered at their firstrehearsal, they could not even imagine that just a few years later audiences of 8,000 would becheering their ovations in China, that they would be invited to appear in the most famous concerthalls, or that they would become Salzburg’s cultural ambassadors to the world. Yet these achievements are not the most important reason why tickets to the ensemble’sappearance sell out several weeks ahead of concert dates, or why the public always demandsencores. The singers combine professionalism with a good dose of humour, show elements, choreography, and even accessories. So whatever it might be that they sing, whether it’s amedieval madrigal, or Michael Jackson’s songs, it is sure to be new and original. VoicesUnlimited aren’t afraid of breaking standards, and more than justify their title!

MELODIES INSPIRED BY THE SOUTHERN SUNQueen of Italian jazz and Brazil’s songmaster

Performers: GUINGA (vocals, guitar, composer, Brazil)STEFANIA TALLINI (piano, composer, Italy)

Different performers, different worlds, different experiences, and one huge passion for music. It in particular has brought together it would appear two incompatible performers – the queen of Italian jazz and the songmaster of Brazil.Pianist Stefania Tallini’s and composer, performer Guinga’s duet enchants audiences both for its southern temperament, and its original ideas. Breaking rules along the way, they’re not after cheap popularity, vice versa – they on the look-out for new quality and a unique sound. They have decided not to combine each other’s works, as commonly expected, but the opposite – each performs the other’s works the way it speaks to them... An experiment that surpasses all expectations, revealing a kinship of souls, and standing out for its poeticism.

    Programme – original compositions

  • We won’t bother counting, but one thing’s for certain – only Njabulo Madlala can pamper uswith such exoticism. The singer gifted with a creamy tembre and impressive stage presence is today being temptedwith a bright opera soloist’s career. However he remembers perfectly well the road taken fromthe dusty suburban streets of Durban to the grand stages: “This is the journey of my life, reflected in numerous concert programmes. I hope you won’t mind wandering along that roadwith me...?” Who could reject such a proposal?

  • VIKTORAS PAUKŠTELIS (piano)

Each encounter with pianist Viktoras Paukštelis is live testimony of how the energy of the entire body, spirit and mind flows through the fingers into an instrument, and comes back to us in the form of art.Having successfully completed his studies in Lithuania and France, the musician is currently pursuing the status of a professional painter – conveying his creative experiences not just in sound, but on canvas as well. Why? According to the pianist, the piano was like a gift for him, while painting is a recurring necessity.“This concert will be full of colour. It will feature numerous common experiences I’ve shared with the piano. Sometimes they’re like quiet conversations, sometimes battles, sometimes sad, other times joyful. A concert appearance spans a wide scale of life’s experiences and technical challenges”, reveals V. Paukštelis.

Performers: LILIANNA ZALESIŃSKA (mezzo soprano, Poland)PIOTR SZYMANOWICZ (piano, Poland)

A sigh of relief can be heard as soon as we hear the first sounds from the polonnaise “Farewell tomy Homeland”. This work’s melody goes beyond the flow of time – listening to it, one is overcome by an inexplainable longing, gentleness, and melancholy...Mykolas Kleopas Oginski most likely never even dreamt about such an achievement – he viewedhis compositional abilities rather modestly, giving most of his attention to state service and the realization of his diplomatic goals. It is a paradox, but it is precisely his musical legacy which has afforded him the most recognitionand glory...The renowned Polish singer Lilianna Zalesińska together with pianist Piotr Szymanowicz will transport you to a time full of romantic gaiety and deep experiences.

PORTUGAL’S GEM The magic of Southern melodies

Soloist MARA PEDRO (vocals, Portugal)With: MÁRIO HENRIQUES (Portugese guitar, Portugal)BRUNO BRÁS (fado guitar, Portugal)

The house of fado in the heart of the capital. No, it’s not a fantasy, but a Christopher SummerFestival concert, in which singer Mara Pedro will reign supreme. The Portugese are not ones to hide their pride when they speak about this performer, who hasalready climbed the Olympus of fado, despite being just 15! Titled as the country’s gem, M.Pedro shines with an unstaged sincerity, having been blessed with a mature voice and feeling agenuine love for fado – and that’s just what’s needed, so that Southern melodies can be revealedin all their beauty.By the way, did you know that Lithuanians are the only nation to have a word meaning“saudade” (a defining character of this genre) in their language, used to express an unexplainablelonging, seeped through every song. Forget about language barriers – at this concert you’llunderstand everything.

    A MOMENTARY MIRACLEA piano recital

    DMITRI GOLOVANOV (piano)

For many, the word “jazz” symbolizes freedom, yet not everyone is aware of just how multi-faceted, richly coloured and flavoured this genre really is.Yet pianist Dmitri Golovanov knows his way around his own kitchen, not to mention his experiments with various repertoires – from jazz classics to electroacoustic offerings. And this probably explains why his playing charms listeners for its special expression: a perfectly controlled sound, memorable melodic lines and pulsating rhythms, “charging” each member of the audience.Asked what jazz desserts can be expected at this concert, the pianist smiles: “Many improvisations, as improvization is a miracle, lasting only for that moment when it happens. It is not a result but a process, that is impossible to repeat, stop or explain”.

Programme – original jazz compositions and improvizations.

DUO LOSINGER ESER (Switzerland):ANIA LOSINGER (dance, composition, choreography)MATS ESER (composition, percussion)

Do you know what the xala is? It’s a unique percussion instrument based on chiming bands, under which there are resonating plates. And playing it is no mean feat, as sound is produced by dancing. Thus, Ania Losinger takes the stage, wearing flamenco shoes, and holding two long (about a person’s height) sticks, and the xala comes to life, bringing on the magic of sound and movement. For the first time in Lithuania, the duo of dancer Ania Losinger and composer, percussionist Mats Eser will transport you to the city that never sleeps or rests, the “Dragon City” – Shanghai. The dancer’s expressive body language and acrobatic hand movements convey the city’s soul, while the rhythms of the percussion instruments set the pace to which one of the world’s largest cities lives.A spell-binding sight, impossible to resist.

    MUSIC AND MEDITATIONA piano recital

    GABIJA RIMKUTĖ (piano)

The ever more rapid pace of life urges many of us to take an interest in various spiritual practices. Some read literature, others attend church, others still take up yoga, while some search for answers to the existential questions in art.Pianist Gabija Rimkutė is convinced that the mission of a modern artist is to give audiences spiritual food for thought. So its no wonder that she’s selected composers for this evening’s programme who touch on the fundamental questions in life in their music: the meaning of man’s existence, the temporality of being in the context of eternity.According to the pianist, all works in one way or another a related to therapy for the soul, so this concert is sure to offer something for every one of us. JOHANNES EBENBAUER (organ, Austria)

Johannes Ebenbauer inherited his love for music from his organist grandfather. That probably why Ebenbauer did not hesitate in choosing the life of a musician. And as the performer himself admits, he was not wrong – he could not imagine a day in his life without the rumble of the organ.J. Ebenbauer is not just a regular concert performer, he also contributes greatly to the fostering and spread of sacred music. He is the artistic director of the association Musica Sacra Wien and the organ music festival Quintessenz, and the initiator of a concert cycle of vocal-instrumental music at the Otto Wagner Church. In 2010 J. Ebenbauer made his debut as a conductor, and in 2013 he became a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna (of the organ and improvization class). We must also add that this organist is an excellent improvizationist, so his performance will be crowned by an improvization on a theme suggested by the audience.

TO THE RHYTHM OF VIVALDI AND FLAMENCOClosing concert of the Christopher Summer Festival

Concert organized in cooperation with the Polish Institute and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain

Soloists: CARLOS PIÑANA (flamenco guitar, Spain)KRZYZTOF PELECH (classical guitar, Poland)With: MIGUEL ANGEL ORENGO (percussion, Spain)Vilnius City Municipality ST. CHRISTOPHER CHAMBER ORCHESTRA (Artistic Director and Conductor Donatas Katkus)

The Baroque genius Antonio Vivaldi, the fiery flamenco, and the St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra... A rare combination indeed. However this is the Christopher Summer Festival, so everything’s possible! Last year we heard the “Flamenco Mass”, this time the charismatic guitarist Carlos Piñana returns with an even more impressive project: he has enhanced A. Vivaldi’s music with Spanish rhythms, and the flamenco – with the rich, expressive and deep sound of the orchestra. The parts of suites he has created breathe in ever new moods: from romantic Spanish landscapes,to the riotous sensuality of flamenco dances. And we can only guess how classical guitar star Krzyztof Pelech and percussionist Miguel Angel Orengo will interpret A. Vivaldi. But don’t be left just guessing. As they say, it’s better to hear something like this for oneself. And see summeroff in a way that you’ll remember just how beautiful and hot it was for a long time!
